accidently bought ascended gear twice
You will be able to salvage ascended items in HoT
Yes you can file a support ticket and they will exchange it.
Or you can keep it if you have other characters.
can i get an exchange or refund or anything for the wasted laurels? cause none of my other chars will ever use the stats of that ascended trinkets…

I doubt that they will answer you soon because they are busy with the release.
If they are rings then you can infuse one of them so you can equip both. It requires fractals though and getting specific drops.

The support team isn’t working on the release. They’re still working at the normal speed.
OP: Yes, put in a support ticket, and ask if you can switch with a different ring.
And, to be fair to OP and others who have done the same thing, “Unique” is a pretty vague descriptor. The word itself just means “one of a kind or unlike anything else”. Nowhere in the game are you told that “Unique” means “Can only use one such item on a character at a time”. It’s an easy mistake to make once. Now, if you make a habit of it, then that’s definitely all on you.

What, pray tell, is so hard to understand about the term “unique”?
No, really. I’m seriously. What needs to be fixed on ANet’s end over this? Do we really need a tooltip that screams “OMFG YOU CAN ONLY WEAR ONE OF THESE AT A TIME THAT’S WHY WE CALL IT UNIQUE”?

You don’t feel any empathy for OP, yet decided to grace us with this “wisdom”; so OP made a mistake, no point in kicking OP when they’re down. It’s pretty bad wisdom too, since support has been known to rectify this. Your contribution has been less than zero; please reconsider a more productive stance!
If you’re going to play semantics, than “unique” would imply you couldn’t buy a second one. Having a duplicate isn’t very unique.
And yea, just wait on support OP. It takes time.

Had the original poster just manned up and accepted they made an avoidable mistake, there would have been nothing upon which to comment.

(Ever consider the reason you can buy more than one unique item is because people have more than one character? Just curious.)
Unique has been used to mean many different things in games, it is not unreasonable for a newer player to not instantly gain understanding of how it’s used here.
That said, OP you have several options.
You can put in a support ticket, and hope they’ll exchange it.
You can wait, and see what the salvage of ascended looks like (judging by all the recent decisions my guess is its going to be pretty crappy.
You can infuse one of them
Red Ring of Death, and Red Ring of Death (Infused) are considered different items can can be worn at the same time. Many people are unaware of this (and is yet another poorly telegraphed function), so isn’t often mentioned.
This solution would likely require a time investment in Fractals to grind the components to infuse it, but with the Fractal changes coming in a few days (assuming they manage to actually launch that) so I’d hang onto it for now.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

Hey, sometimes discussing a problem comes up with a solution, which is much more substantial than talking about OP’s mentality towards life. Like infusing one of the rings, as was suggested above.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usability
Usability design is not the same as dumbing down. Usability means you make things intuitive, rather than confusing. If you have ever picked up a new system effortlessly, it was probably because of one of two things: a) You are really experienced with similar systems or b) It had a lot of careful usability testing done that resulted in a very intuitive system.
Good usability design means that an amateur can pick up a system and feel like a pro, with little time investment. It’s not about reducing complexity; it’s about changing how you deliver complexity.
Usability is essentially communication.
Also, “Unique Equip.” The simplest change imaginable and the meaning becomes clear to all in an instant.

i think that comment is rather stupid – why would unique mean you can only equip one? unique would also indicate there exists only one or you can only buy one – your argumentation holds no water wahtsoever – besides, you can have two legendaries which doesnt make any sense either
All I know is I didn’t have this problem. At all. And I’m pretty new to this game.
Maybe I’m a superhero. Maybe I just want people to think for themselves. Maybe I’m tired of people getting a free pass for throwing up their hands and saying “WHOOPSIE, I SCREWED UP LOL”.
I mean, really. What’s the point of doing anything correctly if we continuously expect everyone else to clean up our mistakes? I might as well not even bother typing correctly. -Sid

Guess what. If there exists only one, then obviously you can only equip one, because once you have that one there are no others. If you can only buy one then you can only equip one because once you buy it you can’t ever buy another.
Therefore there is no situation in which you can use more than one of an item labeled unique.
Also, logic dictates than since there is obviously more than one, and you can apparently buy more than one, the only remaining option is that you can only use one.

In Guild Wars 1 unique only meant it had highest level stats. You could put more than one if you wanted to on your weapons slots.
Therefore, unique does not mean only one of the item could be used.

You’re right. I should have said “within the context of the game we’re discussing”. Please accept my sincere and most humble apologies. -Sid
Flawed logic, based on prior knowledge.
If I could equip only one, why would it let me buy more than one?
Clearly, if I can only use one I should only be able to buy one.
This is basic logic.
A new player, often with their first and only toon isn’t going to instantly think, oh that must be letting me buy more than one because I could feasibly wear it on an alt.
They’re going to see a tag with no context, no explanation.
Consider how many people come to Guild Wars and have trouble wrapping their minds around the fact that “rare” gear isn’t actually all that rare, that “exotic” gear isn’t all that exotic, etc.
And then after seeing all these other terms used willy nilly with no real thought for what could be considered to be their real meaning they’re supposed to magically know that “Unique” is? (except not really, you can buy more than one, thus it’s not unique, you can hold more than one in your inventory, thus it’s not unique)
Consider also that Guild Wars 2 doesn’t operate in a vacuum, that other games use the same/similar terms to mean different things and that gets confusing, and kinda makes demanding that people magically understand all the GW2 terms pretty unreasonable.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

When I played Guild Wars 1, I could have the same unique weapon on my 4 weapon slots if I so desired. So coming from that game where unique meant highest stats to this game where unique means you can have only one, I didn’t read the word unique to mean, you can have only one but as highest stats. (Which it is. Fortunately I never bought one as I read about the restriction on the forum). My point is, if the word does not have a universal meaning across all game types then it’s not reasonable to expect that someone would see it as having a universal meaning. And therefore, could buy it not realizing that the meaning here is different than the meaning in the last game he played.
ANet may give it to you.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for people who just don’t pay attention. “Unique” means “one of a kind”.
If it was one of a kind it would not be possible to buy it twice. By the definition you list it is not unique.
The mistake here was not made by the OP, it was made by Anet who inaccurately labeled the item.

If you never did it before you create a support ticket and ask nicely about it.
I just bought one wrong armor with dungeon tookens, created a CS ticket explain very nicely ask it is it possible to do something about.
Support guy, while being clearly explicit that he is doing only because it is my only request about such a subject and will never do it again, mailed me the gear with the stat combination that I wanted.
May be you would get lucky also.

Complaining will make them happy. If you haven’t noticed throughout the course of human history, some people just LOVE to complain about stuff.
Their complaints don’t have to be justifiable. They just have to be loud and people have to pay attention to them for the desired effect to be experienced by the complainer.
In sum, it’s attention-seeking behavior. -Sid

Your posts here are avoidable mistakes.
To people saying this won’t be possible to change, I picked the wrong ascended weapon from a chest, and they switched that, even though it was an hour after choosing it and I changed my mind. I made it clear that I had changed my mind in the support ticket, yet Anet still swapped the ascended weap. This case was an accident. I’m sure they’ll swap it. Looking at you, Sidenti.
No one ‘knew’ what Unique meant until players tested and confirmed the gear term by buying duplicates and trying to equip both. Before that everyone was guessing with some of those guesses being accurate. The term ‘unique’ only applies to trinkets because they have unique lore based names. If that is the only reason then I agree, there should be a clear definition of the term at the point of sale. Text describing the trinkets as unique lore-based artifacts of which only one can be equipped per character could actually reinforce the lore reasoning.
Offering players the opportunity to learn from their ‘mistakes’ is fun when it happens during combat encounters, JPs, and exploring. NPC vendor encounters……?

Because ‘unique’ in the real world doesn’t mean there is more than one but only one will function if you own two, it means there is only ONE at all, ‘one of a kind’ as you put it. When you can purchase two, that real world definition obviously doesn’t apply and what you claim he should ‘just know’ is a giant logic-leaping assumption that doesn’t make any sense.
History shows that they will refund for these mistakes, particularly for newer players, as the developers have admitted on multiple occasions that is something made unclear on their end and as such it’s their job to fix it or make up for it.

Please guys and gals, don’t feed the trolls.
Trolling is posting opinions one doesn’t agree with (or even care about) just to get people riled up, in which case I would have just reported him because that is a reportable offense.
Unfortunately I think this guy or gal truthfully holds the opinion that anyone who doesn’t innately know what he knows, completely disregarding their experience or the subject matter, should suffer for it. Which frankly, while he has the right to it, is a completely inane opinion that ought to be corrected.
Now I am all for people suffering the consequences of their actions, we live in a ridiculously escapist society that confuses ‘freedom’ with ‘passing the buck’. Everyone expects legislation on where and when and how people have to take responsibility for their actions, and far too many people want as many instances where ‘big brother’ will alleviate them for the results of their ignorance and stupidity as they can get.
But when you take responsibility to the point that people are expected to suffer for the consequences of actions they couldn’t have possibly known the consequences for? You are in fact encouraging consequence without responsibility, and as such are warring against responsibility just as much as those who would have a society without any consequence at all.
