I have a few outfits… I would buy more… except.

I don’t want to be forced to wear a head piece, and i prefer the idea of mixing and matching.
A few of the outfits have some nice parts, and I could definitely build my own outfits around them. At least I would, if I could.
Yeah, I know there are minimal clipping issues with pre-made outfits. I know fixing all the clipping issues with every other equip would be a pain, but still.
I would enjoy using outfit parts in my own composition.
A lot of the fun is in making my own mixture.

please consider releasing armor skin versions of outfits in the future.

I would buy certain pieces from certain outfits.
My personal ‘policy’ at present is to not buy any outfits (in protest at the lack of real armour releases)

Please consider adding more real armour pieces across the board, ASAP.
I’ll pay.

I haven’t bought a single outfit. It is a shame because a lot of them look very interesting.
On the other hand, I have bought Aetherblade, Prime, Celestial, Phoenix, Tricksters, and Magitech armorsets from the gemstore. I like to mix and match. I know its petty, but I like trying to make something unique. My issue with outfits isn’t that I think they are ugly, its that everyone looks the same.

IMO the first step in improving outfits is by separating the outfit from the headgear, that way you can choose headgear from other outfits or use your own armor head piece.

It is not petty to want to make “your own” outfit. All of this is aesthetics. The point is character customization on a visual level.

A full set of skins gives people a starting point, and then they can switch out pieces as the mood strikes them. They may wear the full set for months, and then decide to switch out the pants or the boots.

I own a few outfits, 5 I think. I don’t mind them. Would I like the functionality to pair an outfit with my own choice of headgear (like we could in GW1)? Absolutely. Maybe they’ll be able to give that to us eventually, but it’s not likely to be high on the priority list. Still, I’ll cross my fingers for ‘some day.’

Would I like to play mix and match with outfit and armor? Sure, but Anet has told us “why” its not currently possible. And it’s not specifically due to clipping, though, I’m sure that’s something they think about it too (just to reduce the overall whine). They explained this as part of their “why we can’t just make town clothes into armor skins” conversation, and it has significantly to do with how they coded these things. Maybe eventually they’ll overhaul this code (which I honestly don’t think would be cost effective for them), but until such point what we desire isn’t compatible with what is currently capable. At best, they’d be able to cut some outfits to fit the existing armor weight meshes, but not others, thus resulting in some weights still not having the option to mix and match. I think that would cause greater issues than just having outfits as they presently stand.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

You don’t have to. Turn off head armor in wardrobe or equipment tab and you will turn off the head piece item of outfits, too.

‘would have/would’ve been’ —> correct
‘would of been’ —> wrong

Except if you’re underwater. Which might be a bug. But you can’t shut off the head piece underwater. Drives me batty.

For reading reference, here is their post where they talk about town clothes, armor and outfits.

Source (page 18).
“We do understand and sincerely apologize that there are creative combinations of town clothes that will not exist anymore. Many have asked why remove town clothes as a concept. It boils down to we believe better armor skinning and the outfit system is something we can add more options to more often and will produce a better supported RP game for everyone with more variety in the future. In short, a healthier game.

To expand more on what I mean by better support, It helps if you think of town clothes as a 4th weight class of armor. Clothing was meant to offer visual options that break the class roles, however we were never completely happy with the way it was isolated from the rest of the game and still felt largely the same. Many pieces could have easily been mistaken for light or medium armor. In many ways it was more akin to building an alt character because town-clothes and armor were so separated. Additionally, every time we added something to town-clothes, it didn’t really help someone building their light, medium, or heavy look. And there was no way to add combat gear fairly without creating 3 versions on the back end (light, medium, and heavy). As a customization platform and sustainable expansion design it left a lot to be desired.

When we started looking at bringing more of the clothing back into armor with mix and match styles there are some fundamental incompatible things between weight classes. (part of how we set up every armor to allow many dye channels and styles per piece).. There really is no way at this point over six years since we started development to make absolutely everything work together. So we needed something new to continue to grow in the future.

Outfits give us a way to create highly stylized looks that aren’t constrained to armor slots or weight class. In addition to armor skins that are easier and cheaper to collect across characters and the account dye system we do believe the options across a players whole account are much more attractive now. You’ll see more outfits coming out this summer and additions to the game more often usable by your characters. We try not to allow too much ‘hoarder’ design where we just keep stacking more and more options on leaving lots of unsupported things hanging around. Yes, we do have to give up some of our current closet space and clothing to fit the new wardrobe in. Again, apologies for that.

As always we ask you to try out the new system of customization and see what’s available to you. I think many people will be surprised by how many pieces have become armor compatible. We hope the benefits to the outfit system and wardrobe in terms of future support and additions will be clear, and you can look forward to more new outfits coming very soon."

Well I think it’s quite clear from the post above that they will never just do armor skins instead of outfits. I think the real problem is that ever since they decided to make armor skins in game rewards and not have any in the gem store, we’ve gotten loads and loads of outfits and very very few armors.

I have no problem with the concept of outfits vs armors, each fills a role and are good for different things. However it’s just sad the number of outfits they produce vs adding new armors. A lot of the reaction I’m seeing is that people now would prefer they add more armor skins to the gem store if that means we actually get some new ones since they aren’t adding them in any reasonable amount in game.

I know I’m not the only one who was expecting a lot more armors added with HoT.

Nope, definitely not alone there. I expected more than the..what 3?…that we got. None of which I can even remotely say that I like as a “whole” set. Certain pieces yes, overall not so much.

I hope we see more added, maybe if/when LS spins back up.

I was surprised by the lack of ingame skins with this expansion also, especially when they immediately start bringing out whole new sets of weapon skins in the gemstore at a rate of about one set a week. I thought maybe we would get not just ‘endgame locked behind achievement armors’ but new sets of masterwork armor that drop from mob kills or available from karma vendors.

If they can churn out a weapon set a week for the gem store then they could have made at least one set of karma or mob drop armor per armor weight.
