I left GW2 a while back for various reasons, but wanted to get back into it. So I jumped back onto my mid-30’s guardian…..

And it was awful.

Zones are dead, events are impossible with just one person, the minute you hit a stage with more than one vet mob, you get pasted.
Things like elite devourers just one shot you, which is ok in that you can dodge, but as it take 15mins to kill teh kitten thing, and one mistake ends it, thats just not good.

The leveling experience is quite frankly boring, grindy, unengaging and its almost impossible to take part in the major draw of this game, which is the dynamic events. Which leaves you grinding out heart tasks and gathering, which is somewhat less than exciting.

That’s why they implemented guesting. Guest over to Tarnished Coast, for example, which is a busy server and almost always has people in the zones.

Not to sound rude but did you try to buy green armors for your level 30+ guard? It’ll certainly help finish events solo. Also, try shouting out in /m if you need help. Often times, people leveling their alts may come to help you in your DE.

are you sure, that you are actually playing “Guild Wars 2”?

if you’re mid 30, try out Ascalonian Catacombs.
or jump on a WvWvW choochoo karma train.
or do fractals.
or just explore.
do story quests.
hunt achievements.
train your skills at the sPvP.

guest on more populated servers, if you think that most areas are too empty.

this game got tons of different stuff for everyone’s taste.
and it’s far away from being a grind, unless you’re going for a legendary.

mid level areas in mmos are always empty

not sure why you are having trouble soloing the events though. the only ones in which you should have difficulty are the group events with the champions. And usually those can be completed if you give a shout out in map chat for it.

but if i solo’ed a champion down to below 10% tons of players creeping up all of the sudden…

The DE’s actually scale to the number of players present and I’ve found most anything not labelled as a group event is solo-able. But, you are right that it’s not much fun in an empty zone. So, as suggested, guest on TC or Jade Quarry. There you will find players everywhere which makes for a pleasant leveling experience. And, as also suggested, gear makes a difference and if you can afford a few green items all the better—especially around your weapons if you are having a hard time killing things.

also, pvp….just lol. Jumped into WvWvW, getting one shot. Seriously, so much for scaling, and I used to really enjoy WvWvW.

Sorry, I used to love this game, though it briliant in beta, played it at lauch and got my mesmer up to 80, then had to stop playing.

Tried to get back into it over the last few days….and its an awful experience.

I know some of you dont like to hear it, and i know you get defensive, thats understandable.

But telling me to go do other things like Wauwi has is not helpful at all. its basically saying that yes there is a massive issue, but just stick your head in the sand and ignore it.

Anyway, my feedback was for Anet really.

It’s not that I’m getting defensive. I’m just trying to suggest ways for you to enjoy GW2. I know some people including myself were not into particular content at the start, but have since enjoyed those content because someone suggested it to us (or the game, via the daily/monthly rewards). you get what you put in. it’s said about school/education and other aspects of life, including the entertainment that is video games.
Were you expecting not to earn everything in GW2 and still get it? (hearts; 100% map completion)
Are you trying other weapons? (to find the one you have fun with and can deal with more or fewer mobs; tactics, ya know)
I recently got a 4th character to 80, happened to be a guardian. Yes, Trading Post has plenty of inexpensive gear & weapons that you can get as you rank up, loot is fairly regular too (as long as you’re not ranking up by merely running to get experience from POI, to Vista, to Waypoint without killing mobs), and then the crafting also (options are good). Not all DEs have multi Veterans, classic gaming tactics can still be applied, such as kiting a tough NPC and pulling select NPCs away from a larger group.
As I got that Guardian to 80, along the way, I’d spend more time in a map I was not ranked for yet (rank 30, I’d be in rank 35-40ish areas); I’d not go for a 100% map completion for an individual map until I reached rank 60 (has a chance of a Rare gear or weapon as reward), and will go back later, as an 80 with exotic gear, for map completion if I feel like it. If you’re not feeling the gameplay for a little while and want to get fairly big Exp, use a speed booster, and run as fast as you can (use weapon move to boost speed) from Waypoint to Waypoint (especially in a higher ranked map to get lots of Exp). While the exhilaration of running for your life surrounded by NPCs that are 5 to 15 ranks higher than your squishy toon gets the heart rate up maybe you’ll find a DE that has lots of players and you can join.
Here is a good map site, if you want to scout the layout. http://gw2.mmorpg-life.com/interactive-maps/
good luck. earn what you find enjoying, and skip the rest. maybe to come back to the skipped parts later on.

One shot in pve is not such an issue, if some fights were shorter, but keeping up dodging for a 15min fight is a bit much.

As for pvp, no its not all the time, I had a couple of decent skirmishes, but then something (I think a ranger, possibly a thief), pasted me in a single shot from range, it was silly. So much for health scaling. no form of pvp should allow that kind of thing to happen. I dont mind losing, i mind not having a chance to do anything.

You are assuming I;ve not tried, I;ve tried. I’ve got a level 80, I played every beta event, I played extensively at lauch, and loved it, but that was when zones were packed and events were fun and popped all the time.

Nowadays levelling zones are almost deserted, and events are not only rare, but also next to impossible to complete alone for anything but the most basic ones.
For a game designed around a living dynamic world, thats a humongous issue.

The autoleveling in GW2 has a side effect, if you do not keep your equipment within 5 or so levels of your character level you actually get weaker as you level. This is not a big deal since any equipment will do. Blues and greens are fine, and these are cheap on the TP. Karma vendors in the level appropriate areas will provide good equipment for little karma. Also, the Citadel karma vendor in your home borderland in WvWvW always sells PvE equipment for your current level (autoleveling vendor). If you don’t WvWvW, the citadel is a safe area, no combat necessary since it is your home borderland entry point.

Dont worry about that, thats just the thief class, and it happens allover,vs every class. For that you need to play pvp alot to learn how to counter them. Also dont forget you’re “just” a low lvl,not fully specced yet and eventhough there is lvlscaling, the difference is still kinda big, especially since you dont have all traits unlocked yet.I just suggest to join a nice guild lvl up together, gear up and hit wvwvw when you get to 80.

But honestly, thiefs just do insane amounts of dmg while being perm stealthed, just search the forums about that,Loads of post, thats not your fault.Stability, retalition, any invulnerable skill, protection etc,pop it when you get hit by a thief, and pining them down is really important otherwise they just stealth, get hp again etc etc or cowardly run off,you need to be Real fast with dealing with them, for that i suggest to check out your class section how to deal with thiefs,i honestly never played as a guardian.

If you are getting one shot as a guardian in open world PvE, you are doing something wrong. Most likely you have not updated your gear (costs 5-15s)

If you want to just level running around the open world and worry about finding people, guest on Tarnished Coast or Jade Quarry.

For the record, I know what devourer he’s talking about, and it’s entirely possible to get one-shotted by it. I ran a full defensive guardian, highly over-leveled for that zone, with appropriate gear, and it still two-shotted me.

So I’m sure lower leveled, lower geared, NOT-defensive guardians can easily get one shotted. I had to do that event myself, as well. He’s not exaggerating about 15 minutes. Not every monster in the game is perfectly scaled and perfectly balanced. Some of the champs and even a few vets are absolutely ridiculous for the zones they’re in.

  • Press O (trade post)
  • Click Trade Post icon on left.
  • Click Search Filter next to search box
  • Edit the level range to the closest increment of 5 at or under your level (i.e. you’re level 37, select 35 to 35 gear)
  • Check Armor under Category, then search
  • Go through until you find the armor prefix you want (for level 35 guardian, let’s say you want strong scale….type “strong scale” into the search box)
  • Type prefix in search box, then search
  • Buy what you need.

For Weapons, do the same, but select weapon as category and the weapon(s) you want as the sub category.

If I insulted you in any way, I apologize.

Speaking from personal experience, my first 80 was a mesmer, my second 80 a guardian.
I found the guardian a lot easier. It helped that I was leveling armorsmithing on him and had him always with green / rare quality armor.

It seems that you dislike doing the heart guys, but you should really try and do them, as they allow you to get green quality armor / weapons, which makes it a lot cheaper than constantly buying it off the TP. If you have some spare gold I would definitely advise you to train armorsmith/weaponsmith on your guardian. It will help to get gear through the levels, you gain some experience from crafting, and you can make a tidy profit along the way if you bother to do the heart guys and get the karma recipes.

To level I did lots of hearts and a great deal of events. In my personal experience there where very few that I couldn’t finish even when there was nobody else around. If there where a champion mob it would definitely make it a lot more difficult if not impossible, but there are enough events in the game that I could easily skip those ones and move on to a more forgiving one.

Can I ask you in what server / region you play?

On EU, Desolation is usually good for guesting and my own Piken Square, although a medium pop server is usually well populated in almost every area. I’ve been able to do events even at unlikely hours like 4am. From what I ear Tarnished Coast is a good server to guest if you are from NA.

Hope that helped you.

Also when you attacked that Devourer that took 15 minutes to kill, did you notice the “GROUP EVENT” on the event area? It’s there for a reason (an obvious one)

If by elite, you mean Champion, those are hard to kill by one person. Unless it’s certain champions that advance a chain or lots of people happen to be walking by, most of those events get skipped.
Like others have said, make sure your armour and weapons are up to your level. You should be changing armours/weps/trinkets every 10 levels or so (this isn’t expensive either).
At level 30 you have trait points – make sure they are spent. Not only do they give you valuable attributes, they also increase your stats.
The map is full of dynamic events, hearts (all of which should go much, much faster once you got your traits and gear sorted). Crafting is another great way to get exp and can come in useful. There’s also wvw, dungeons, gathering.. meh, pretty much everything in this game gives you exp.
Your personal story gives a lot of exp quite quickly, as does doing the daily, even beyond the 5 required for the general reward.

I found the mesmer incredibly easy to level, and to pvp with, its almost impossible to die as a mesmer, and you can pick up a huge number of enemies and take them down at the same time to compensate for somewhat lacklustre single target dps.

Its not that its hard, its just that its a bit tedious. I played a guardian extensively in beta, but the lack of decent ranged made me go mesmer at launch for WvWvW reason. Thought I’d get back into my guardian.

Its not that I dislike heart tasks, its more that I see them as a reason to get you into an area to do the DEs there, not as teh main content. Lets face it they are not that interesting or inspired!

Its not that I cant do some events, I can, and some just take an insanely long time, with little reward. But some are clearly not scaling properly.

I’m on Far Shiverpeaks, which used to be quite active, but zones seam really really dead now, at least in lower levels, not been to the higher ones yet since I came back in.
I’ll try desolation (was on that one on beta) and see if its better. Thanks for the recommendation.

I’d have to disagree with you when you say ‘most events can’t be soloed’. Most non-group events and even some group events can be soloed by a guardian especially, I’ll admit that most group and a few non-group ones though are near-impossible to actually do on you own, but there’s heaps of events you can still do with no one else around.

As people have said and it’s a real problem, mid-level zones are really dead on most servers and I understand that you aren’t going to be able to get people to group together do kill champions, made worse by the fact that some champions can take -ages- to die and offer identical rewards to much faster events.

You’re either:

1. Trying to do areas with mobs 10+ your level.
2. Trying to do group events alone.
3. Trying to kill champions alone.
4. Wandering WvW alone.

There’s no reason you should be having any trouble doing regular dynamic events or other regular pve content with your guardian, no matter how bad you are, heck I can solo many of the group events with my warrior.

I also never really had an issue of “zones being dead.” Sure, some are more populated than the others, but eventually, you encounter someone and there’s usually always someone linking events in the map chat.

I’ve experienced the veteran devourer of insta-death too. The attack that causes it is an AOE caused by a rock it throws. The rock travels slowlyish through the air and a red circle allows you to dodge the attack. However, if you’re a melle class, like a guardian, and are thus stood toe to toe with said devourer, there is almost no warning of this shotgun rock of death to the face. This is the cause of the one hit kill to newbs in the area. Sad thing is this devourer also guards a skill point.

I think that your being “One shot” everywhere is a bit exaggerated. And if so,then i honestly think ( as a guardian especially, being one shot ? come on…)You’re playing the class wrong.Or either need to get used to learning how to use your guardian properly. It’s kinda easing blaming it all on anet,i doubt it’s so in this case. And for the low lvl populated areas being pretty empty,as other suggested, just hop to a high pop server for a while, its free after all. Also, join a guild..Play together.

The only possible thing that could have done that is a fully 100% geared glass-cannon warrior that used Kill shot. Your Aegis must have been down, and you must not have been using toughness gear. Even your toughness will scale up if you have it on your gear. You probably also don’t have any vitality in your gear either. So, the game likely scaled your gear, which is likely power/precision since that’s the best to level up with especially in mid-30’s, and so you were scaled up to a weak version of a glass cannon guardian and since Guardian’s have a low HP pool you got one-shot by a charged up skill by a fully geared glass cannon.

Even at max level, a Glass-cannon guardian only has around 14k+ HP, and if the Warrior was spec’d for max damage and popped his damage buffing CD’s to get that shot, then it makes sense that he hit that high.

Upscaling doesn’t make you as geared as a full exotic, if you’re wearing greens then you’re upscaled to around where you’d be if you had full greens at level 80 and greens have lower defense than exotics. And if you’re having trouble in Dynamic Events and dying a lot then I am not convinced that you’re even in greens. You can’t expect to be the most competitive in that situation in WvW, your best bet is to roll with a train and get included in the karma they get.

Had your first post included more information, I may have not assumed much, was just firing off a suggestion(s) from the hip. You might consider making a less revolting thread title next time and include some information that leads the discussion to what you are seeking by making it. It seemed it was a very short review that included “Awful” in the title, and what might one expect with that setup? Instead of title: “Dragonbrand Server. When are mid level maps more populated?” body: I’m looking to group with players to rank up with that like to do DEs._ or something like that. Also, it might be good to put that thread in: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/guilds/guilds

If your issue is with DEs only, perhaps make a thread in https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/events but if the issue is more of ranking up, then well, I bet there are tips and guides here and there https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian

I get the sense it’s probably a population issue you are most concerned with, and well, like DeadPool says, My common sense is tingling. Months after launch, some go some stay. Not all are at the same level with a character at a certain point in time, or have the same motivation leading them to the same location at the time you or I login.

I’ve got characters in a guild that quit. You can multi guild. Pick to represent one at a time, have options for grouping with players. If/when they add an Alliance chat, that’d be great to possibly make things easier for finding players to group with when ranking up or other content. I found a new guild. Playing sparingly with hopes that content gets smoothed out over time (same hopes for DCUO. Gave up years ago on WarhammerOnline.) & eager to see what the next couple of larger content updates have to offer (whenever that may be). good luck

I also never really had an issue of “zones being dead.” Sure, some are more populated than the others, but eventually, you encounter someone and there’s usually always someone linking events in the map chat.

you see, your assumption that I am a total noob and cant do anything is not only arrogant, its wrong.

If you cant be constructive, instead of posting like this and being defensive why bother?

How am I being defensive? I didn’t call you “a total noob” – you did.
I was just trying to help you out, giving hints to what you may be doing wrong.
Please give me an example of a regular event you can’t solo, or any non-champion, non-dungeon proper level mob, who can one shot you.

The mob that one-shot’s him is most likely the champion devourer in the Fields of Ruin. However when I fought him on my Guardian when I was in the mid-30 range of leveling, I did not die and neither did the champion. I never even got below half HP, the only one shot that champ does is a ranged rock throw. If you stay within melee range and dodge when he obviously get ready to hit you, then you will stay alive no problem. You use your utilities if it gets dangerous and you’re out of the woods.

So, I assume he’s undergeared. OP you should splurge and grab some rares or at least greens.

also, pvp….just lol.

People don’t spend time leveling now. They are in specific zones for maximum event exp foot hills for example…. then they are crafting to 80 because they have the gold to.

But there are always people event hunting in queensdale….. maybe its your server though..

Having recently levelled a guardian, solo’d most events I encountered along the way, (Including CHAMPION level bosses!) I can safely say the OP has an L2 kitten ue not the game.

I consider myself to be quite good at the game, and I’m not expecting him to go around soloing champions; but events scale to the number of participants and with the exception of events involving champions or large area defence a lone player can do it quite easily – especially on a guardian which is comparative easymode.

you get what you put in. it’s said about school/education and other aspects of life, including the entertainment that is video games.

It sure would be a humungous issue without guesting. But since guesting is free and there are busy servers, it sounds like you’re making excuses to hate the game.

Guesting is part of the game. If you don’t like the traffic on your server when you play, find a better server and play on it.

Or join a guild of like minded people and play with friends.

Its a MMO
Try Duo’ing
Started guardian Monday with friend
Lvl 80 and in full exotics
Its not hard

If you cant find a buddy in a game this big, problems more with you then the game.

Game has many problems
Leveling isn’t one of them

Could of made a Haiku
But wasn’t worth the effort.

Even if my skill was so great as to guarantee success, I wouldn’t solo a champion, unless the XP I get is equal to that of the number of normal events I could complete in the same time.

I don’t even do normal events solo. If I’m the only one doing one that’s impossible to die on, like raven riddles, I’ll put in enough contribution for a gold medal, ditch it, and make sure to stay on the map until someone else completes it.

Going to the 1-15 zone with an Event daily seems to be the new Kessex Hills centaur bridge.

are you sure, that you are actually playing “Guild Wars 2”?

if you’re mid 30, try out Ascalonian Catacombs.
or jump on a WvWvW choochoo karma train.
or do fractals.
or just explore.
do story quests.
hunt achievements.
train your skills at the sPvP.

guest on more populated servers, if you think that most areas are too empty.

this game got tons of different stuff for everyone’s taste.
and it’s far away from being a grind, unless you’re going for a legendary.

Thats a pretty lame excuse, and didnt address the OP’s issues.
The Events in the game are hard to solo if people arent helping. thats an issue. Some classes are better at doing these than others. so leveling without gear twinking can lead to sometimes being underpowered.

That devourer is fields of ruin is pretty annoying. He wanders outside the brand and into areas where players get their levels scaled down too low.

Hi, OP did mention he just returned to the game. I had similiar experience when I left the game for some time and came back. To be honest the zones were not appealing to play with at all, the same reason why I left the game before. I just wanted to get a character to lv 80 and see how it went so I came to level it up.

Once you reach lv 80, there are suddenly many things you can do and the game actually starts to feel interesting. Like getting full exotic gears, dungeon runs (no good when you are low level, plus you often get kicked by lv 80 players the moment you are into a dungeon), major timer based world events, crafting legendary (as a long term goal), WvW, etc.

The leveling is really boring. One I would suggest is to do leveling in WvW. It’s more fun and rewarding, plus playing there feels more like to play in a MMO. Joikittenerg and do what a low level char can still do the best (taking control of siege weapons, or rez others, or something that high dps people usually won’t do). It can be fun

I want to say it again, low level leveling and grinding are boring even now when I try a new char. Repeating the same events in low level zones are boring. But I get by with it swaping to WvW from time to time. Give it a try Your country (server XD) requires your service :P

If you are getting one shot as a guardian in open world PvE, you are doing something wrong. Most likely you have not updated your gear (costs 5-15s)

If you want to just level running around the open world and worry about finding people, guest on Tarnished Coast or Jade Quarry.

I’ve got the best gear I could find, if you can recommend where to get some I’ll go take a look.

Don’t forget to keep you trinkets updated, those rings, earrings and neck-piece can really boost your attack or defensive stats. I came back to my engi alt after not playing him for a few months and was wondering why he felt really weak until I checked my gear. He was a level 34 wearing level 10 trinkets.. after spending a few silver at the TP I was back to leveling and melting mobs.

Also, always put a Sigil of Bloodlust on your main weapon:
“+5 Power each time you kill a foe. (max 25 stacks and ends on down)”
After killing 25 mobs you’ll have +100 power, for only 2.5ish silver this is a no-brainer.

One solution to enjoy the game is to be more optimistic (And no, optimism does not always lead to disappointment). That way, you can enjoy the game more and believe me, it works!

Anyways, if you still see the leveling experience as awful then it’s time to find another MMO, no one is stopping you… Although if you feel like coming back to Guild Wars 2, know that there is always a place for you here.

I’ve been leveling a lot of characters to 80 recently and I honestly like it way more now than on release. Shortly after the game came out every event was a ridiculous zergfest and you never fought things so much as you desperately tried to spam aoe skills to tag stuff before it all dropped dead instantly. Scaling also made it so these events went on for an incredibly long time.

Now it’s pretty good. You see people here and there, but it isn’t a giant, ravenous locust swarm of players anymore, at least on Maguuma. This stuff is fun with 1-5 people. Not so much with 50.

Every guardian has aegis, you can’t be one shot if you tried.

Constructive advice : talk to people, get some friends, play in a group/guild.
