Why has it been shooting up so much lately? Did anet do something to the drop rate or key prices while I wasn’t looking? They were 1-3 copper for like 3 years, what happened?

The drop rate has been lowered, yes.

Or people have been buying them to drive up prices and sell them back at the higher prices.

Maybe so. But it went from 2.94 silver and ~147k supply to 5 silver and ~112k supply in about a half hour today, and it’s done something similar before.

If the game just gave us what we wanted, the prices wouldn’t be so high.

It’s not the drop rate, it’s market manipulation.
A few people are buying them all and Anet isn’t doing anything about it.

And someone sucked up nearly 60K of them in 20 minutes for that to happen. There is nearly 75K for sale at 5 silver right now. That’s a pretty nice price dam right now. That’s also roughly 60% of all units posted for sale.

They also bought large amounts on about August 15-21 (supply ~3,029,000 to ~1,150,000) and April 6-9 (~2,742,000 to ~63,000). There was a thread on the forum about it each time.

You don’t, you dump a large chunk of them and chalk it off as start up costs.
