Hi, I’m new as well.

From what I can understand necro is like a glass cannon with buggy minions that may or may not be fixed with HOT.

Mesmer is more of a CC class.

Ele is more complex and should be a really strong all around class

IMO necro looks cooler and this games all about fashion so….

Just make both and take both up to like lv10 then see which one you feel more interested in. shouldn’t take much time

Necro minions got fixed in a recent patch. So I hear. I haven’t quite moved back to it.

But, rundown from someone who’s gotten all to max level:

Elementalist: I’d call them straightforward, but it’s a deep, complex class that has the most direct impact of the three clothies. They’re also among the most wanted classes for group content (or at least the old dungeons).

Mesmer: Trickier to play, and they take some build up to really be potent, but they’re decent for crowd control and high on condition damage. A high skill curve, but I find them the most fun of the three. Often wanted for their unique teleportation skills.

Necromancer: Probably the best on having different build options of the three. Between minions, daggers/wells, Epidemic/corruption, etc, the different necro builds play more uniquely. Less on group synergy and more on tearing down an enemy, Necros toy with conditions the most of the three.

Many alts; handle it!

I have an 80 in all three, and of them, I think my favorite is probably the elementalist. That said, it takes a little doing to learn to survive, but once you do, the paper-flyswatter feeling goes away.

As for necro, yes, the minions are buggy, but you don’t have to use them. Indeed, most necro builds – in PvE or PvP – don’t.

Kati Kainulainen – Norn warrior | Irina Kuznetsova – Human elementalist
Baghaar Ironfang – Charr guardian | Maja Sigurdsdottir – Norn ranger

Necro a glass cannon? No, No and No, Necro has the highest survival of these three classes with his different life pools. Do NOT use his minions his other skills especially wells are much stronger. Dagger/Horn + Staff and Deathshrould make all very good damage.

I don’t like Mesmer in PvE especially against many weak enemies as all clones go away on targets death. But he is strong against strong single enemies.

Dagger/Dagger Ele is very good to finish many mobs very fast and quite robust if you learned to play him. Staff Ele is the glass cannon high damage but hard to keep alive if enemies come close.

Ceterum censeo SFR esse delendam!

Staff Ele is all about kiting and position. I did something on the border of 15v1 during a Scarlet invasion. Took forever, but I came out of it without even getting downed. :P

Heh, the necro-minion bug (should be fixed now) is what made me go Dagger/Wells. I love it. So much more interesting than firing staff marks into a wall of minions.

Given that you’re able enough, the elementalist is the best in everything.

The minion patch improved them vastly. Its actually viable because they attack stuff instead of standing around doing nothing. Hell its even viable for WvW roaming, a MM Necro now is an amazing duelist that can beat out Thieves and Mesmers. Of course, you still cant flee for kitten but hey at least we’re not cowards like certain cough stealth hark classes.

I have 33 level 80 characters. Having played them all quite a bit, I enjoy each for what it brings to the experience. My favorite, by far, is Mesmer.

That said, I don’t recommend Mesmer as a first character, because figuring them out and leveling them up can be a royal pain in the kitten. Also, not everyone is into exploding clouds of lavender butterfiles, and I can totally respect that. My male Mesmers tend to wear tough-looking outfits with dark, macho colors to compensate.

Now that I’m approaching 5k hours played among all the professions, though, there’s no doubt that I can kick way more botox with my Mesmers (I have five) than with any of my other characters. Not even close.

For a first character, Warrior or Longbow Ranger are solid choices. For uber pwnidge and soloing just about any champ or crowd of mobs you encounter in the open world, Mesmer is my weapon of choice.

I’m a Mesmer. I can do anything.

Edit: Forgot minions got fixed, which now makes Minion Necromancer a very solid choice. A full crowd of minions is a pestilence upon the land and a veritable loot sponge. Fun and easy, great for starting out.

actually as far as dps goes necro is one of the farthest from glass cannon. Even in full glass dps gear they are quite tanky. Theyre tied for the highest base HP pool and get even more “HP” from death shroud and have access to protection, which reduces damage taken by 33%. If they decided to have some defensive stats Necros can be super tanky.

I love necro because they have excellent AOE in WvW and they are really good at doing lower level content like Ascalonian catacombs because they get a trait that increases crit chance by 50% in death shroud and with fury thats a flat 70% crit chance even in low level zones, where crits demolish things.

in WvW they do hella aoe damage with Wells and can destroy single targets with lich form.

Management of conditions and CC like fear and immoblize make them super good at soloing open world content too.

The main drawback to being a necro is lack of stability, which is super important in pvp and wvw, leaving you to rely on your friends for stability.
