central Tyria mastery points (non-HOT)
I would like to second this sentiment.
There are 3 tyrian mastery lines that require a total of 49 points to completely unlock. 19, 19, and 11. Anyone who says that it requires 20 something is misunderstanding the UI; the last rank displays total points to unlock last rank, not cumulative total for the mastery path.
There are 66 mastery points available to get by various means. Unfortunately the achievement UI no longer shows me what they are if already achieved, I can only count the ones remaining that I have not yet achieved.
Now that is out of the way.
I had 44 tyria mastery points as I had played this game lots and lots over the years. I diligently booster farmed the XP and part way through realised I would be short 5 to unlock the last rank (fractal singularity). Sure I don’t -need- it but wanted it.
I have a few easy points that I can still get, such as tequatl meta, a silver waste jump puzzle and a karka queen kill, but others require a pointless amount of repetition or grind: unlock every ascended armour skin, fractal weapon skin, cultural armor skin for example, just doesn’t suit my playstyle. It’s a gold sink or won’t get used. Others are available by doing living story meta achievements. Still repetition.
So even though I have a choice on how to get those last achievements for red stars, I am a little disappointed that the choice feels somewhat limiting. Without being able to see what was already rewarded, these last ones feel grindy.
Suggestion for fix: allow the achievement panel to retain red and green stars on already achieved mastery points so that we can review our accomplishments with aa more informed perspective.
*Suggestion 2*: award a red mastery point per set number of achievement points (1k per point?) Or pop them in achievement reward chests. This will allow players to gain them in a wider variety of ways. If they want to grind it entirely through entropy track and salvaging, what is the harm? It can be capped at 66 or let to tick over like old skill points did. This would allow future development of alternate tracks.
Kind regards.
I believe a buff is needed to the Tyria mastery points, its impossible to level it up.
How do I figure out which Mastery Points I left that I need to get? I only have two tiers left to finish the Legendary Crafting Mastery before I’m done with the Central Tyria Masteries altogether. It’s really bugging me.
Your achievements UI had red star icons next to categories with achievements that grant them, then the particular ones had the red mastery icon.

Thank you very much.
My biggest beef with the Tyrian Mastery points is how they were distributed. 13 of them in FotM are far too many. 8 requiring a gem store purchase of the Living Story season for new accounts. 5 for the Silverwaste Legendaries which is nothing more than a time sink waiting for them to spawn.
I filed a bug report. Counting up what achievements I have I got to 24. Plus one more that was not triggered in the achievement panel after I did it multiple times. I received 13 points. People may want to total the points they should have (they are all on the wiki) and compare it to what you got.
Hmm…I show 29 out of 38 (maybe 39, not sure on one) it seems I should have obtained.
That kind of sucks.
It’s good to see this post b/c I was trying to figure this out for the past few days and I finally did the same as you and when I counted up the Mastery Points that are shown as achieved on the Hero panel vs the total shown on the Mastery panel there is 9 points missing, most are for the various stories that I have already completed. This is a real PIA b/c the experence bar is moving and when I am ready to spend points they won’t be available. If I had rushed like many, then the bar would be full and no points to spend.
I filed a bug report but there has been no Dev response on this yet so at some point we all will probably be stuck…
I would suggest submitting bug reports and/or support tickets. The more they know this is happening the more likely it is to be resolved.
I really dislike its all tied to season 2 content which I can’t do solo and jumping puzzles that I can’t do well either. And three in fractals on stuff that is hard for me to dodge (shockwaves of molten alliance bosses) and one that involves the dolphin form, and one that no one can do right and everyone skips which is the ooze boss.
The rest is money sinks, Which isn’t right at all.
I’m already trying to play players to run the content for me so I can get the achievements necessary to get the mastery points needed to max the core masteries but everyone is trying to do the new content in just a week instead of helping players like me. Its kittening sucks!
I doubt I can even get a Mesmer or two to get me though the gold badges/jumping puzzle in SW anymore! The guild I built with others designed to help people like me and be non meta/no hassle, even went down the drain as no one that built it reps it and we all have lives and don’t even have time to run it.
yeah wish there was some strong box way of collecting masteries like in the jungle. or by having them on the map somewhere. All the achieves i didn’t want or couldn’t do are the ones i have left and i need 5 points and only see a path to 3 of them
I’m a solo Pve’r/ explorer and that’s what i liked about gw2 original, endless possibilities. I’ll pvp/wvw when i get bored of things or guild is active when i’m on. But this xpac is almost undoable if you are solo player. Lots of HPs and content is structured around and much easier with 2-3 or many more people. Seems to have gone in the direction for hardcore players. gl

I for one like the way they did it. Mastery points are supposed to be something you work towards, not something freely given. HoT has been out less than two weeks, these masteries are supposed to take time to complete. Play the game, have fun, get what you want first then slowly work towards the others.

Here’s a tip. Don’t dodge the Molten Berserker’s shockwave. Jump over it. Jump is never on cooldown, uses no endurance, and is always available.

or die by jumping of bridge after the champion getting 4 friends to kill the bosses for you.

A lot of us do not mind working towards things. Like I have already done every Jumping Puzzle in Central Tyria and have map completion on 5 characters and one more that only needs to finish hearts to get it. Pretty much the only thing left for me to do is spend gold on weapon and armor collections. That’s not work its grinding gold. I went through the list trying to find something I can do to earn more Tyria MPs and there isn’t anything. Which is what this thread is about, its almost impossible to finish these lines. The problem lies in the fact that they tried to make up stuff for people to do in Central Tyria to slow us down, when most of us had already done everything in it already. Which leads to them using some ridiculous stuff to do in order to earn MPs. Plus there is the broken MPs that many of us have completed on top of that but do not have credit for which pushes that bar even closer to impossible to complete.
if you have done everything you should have enough mps to finish all core tyria lines.
I havent completed everything only 4 of the s2 stories so 4 points from there.
havent finished any of the collection/ rare collection, silverwaste, explorer, fasion, bosses ( 4 easy there just get into a organised group 1 hour before spawn for tri wurm 3 days + karka queen and you got the 4 I got from season 2 stories)
And I still got 49 of 49 mastery points in core tyria

I have found some friends who will run some of season 2 with me but I really wish they will fix this. I have plenty of points (counting what I should have) to get all levels of pact commander and then some (but the other 2 masteries are a waste of points). They only gave me 13 points though so I really need them to fix this soon. Hopefully today’s patch does so.

The problem is not getting the xp for a mastery. The problem is you do an achieve that is documented as giving you a MP and you may or may not get it. Pretty much defeats the incentive of doing achievements until this is fixed.
I agree wholeheartedly. Vanilla World Tyria needs some love in the Mastery department.
I perfectly understand that Arena Net needs to funnel people into HoT, but as long as HoT is so very much solo unfriendly, the solo players (me) cannot play it (I tried), leaving them (Meee) with only Vanilla Open World Tyria.
Some old wise person once said a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link.
Give us ‘weakest links’ (solo players) (me) some new realistic ways to earn Mastery Points in our beloved vanilla open world Tyria, and I will wriggle over in happiness and buy more gems than I do already
Thanks Menadena for starting this thread.

Well then, the problem is a bug, not implementation. Submit bug report, post in bug forums, and move on until it is fixed.
I agree with this sentiment. When I logged into GW2 for the first time after the update I had 27 mastery points. Enough to do the Pact Commander track and a few left over for the low level Fractal and Legendary tracks.
So I looked at ways to get the last 22. You know what? Except for TT there wasn’t a single one that I was interested in doing. Collections of spoons? Completing rare collections? I mean I’ve been playing a lot and I still only have two of the map fragments for the Treasures Collection. The amazingly tedious Golden Badges (really 30 jumping puzzles from easy to really hard) for ONE Mastery Point? Come on now. Some of those Badges should give a Mastery Point on their own.
Simply there is a tremendous disparity between the amount of work to get these Mastery Points in Tyria and in HoT. In HoT you get Mastery Points from completing events. They practically fall into your lap just from completing events. In many cases all you have to do is go to a certain location.
Ultimately GW2 is billed as ‘play it your way’. I think the way Mastery Points are structured in Central Tyria could use some work.
I am in the same boat as the previous posters. I used to play GW2 a lot, from beta until I lost interest in the repetitive zerg living story content. When I left, I had 16k APs and was in the top 500 or 600 for AP in EU.
Coming back to HoT now, after a 2 year break, I had 26 Tyria mastery points, and when I started to look around where to get more in a reasonable way I end up either with gold sinks (fashion collection?) or gem sinks (buy the story content I missed on the gem shop). This does already to begin to impact on my re-found enjoyment of the game.
TL:DR – please add more Tyria mastery point options for players who are either new or haven’t played in quite a while.
It takes literally a few minutes to redo the Karka Queen. Most jumping puzzles can be portaled with mesmers, and there are often mesmers portaling them. I’m not sure why it’s so hard to get more points for you, but many of them aren’t that hard.
By contrast the story achievement rewards are considered hard y a lot of people.
If HOT MPs can be got simply from killing things it’s good enough for Tyrian ones too.

You know, I have done all jumping puzzles but the one in Silverwastes. And yes, Karka Queen is no problem. But that is 2 points, when to be able to craft one of the new legendaries I would need 12 points. At the end of the day the question is – is this game fun for me, and do I want to keep spending my time in it? If something is not fun, and impacting my enjoyment seriously enough, I will try and let the devs know about it. Which I am doing here. And that has nothing whatsoever to do with how much (or not) you enjoy the game, nor will you trying to dismiss my experience as invalid help matters in the slightest.
Core Tyria masteries currently require a total of 49 mastery points out of 66 available.
22 mastery points can be earned simply by playing the personal story. You need to take 5 characters (of 5 different races) to the end of the level 30 story, three of them (or three different orders) through the level 40 story, and just one all the way to the end. That’s enough points for the whole pact commander line (19 points) and even leaves you to skip one race’s story if you don’t care for it.
Fractals of the Mists achievements offer 14 mastery points. 11 points are needed for the complete fractal mastery track, allowing people interested in fractals to get their points right inside the content and people that don’t like fractals can easily ignore those points since they won’t have any use for the fractal masteries anyway.
That leaves the legendary track (19 points). 8 points can be had from the season 2 story if you have that unlocked (which many players do, especially if you are interested in the game’s stories), plus 8 more from the story achievements (which are admittedly pretty difficult for many players). A few points here and there come by naturally (like getting a character to level 80 or 100% map completion, which you need for a legendary anyway).
If you really want to unlock all of the central Tyria mastery tracks, you probably will have to go out of the way on the last few points, just like in Maguuma, but there are sufficient points achievable to give you room for leaving out the really bad ones.
If HOT MPs can be got simply from killing things it’s good enough for Tyrian ones too.
Where in HoT do you gain mastery points from killing things??? I see a lot of points from story steps&achievements, strongboxes, mastery insights, and adventures, but I’m missing where killing stuff allows you to gain mastery points.

Most of that stuff comes from killing things, many of the Tyria ones come from non-combat stuff like collecting stuff that aren’t mob drops.

???
Where in HoT do you find all those mastery points for killing things?
- 14 mastery points are given during one play-through of the HoT storyline
- 4 points can be gained doing all story achievements
- 23 points are gained from channeling mastery points across the maps
- 20 points can be gotten from opening hidden strongboxes
- 30 points are gated by adventures (15 each for silver and gold participation)
That leaves 38 points not accounted for, most of which are achieved by finishing events or event chains in the new maps as well as all kinds of explorer achievements (jps, diving goggles, etc.). In fact looking through the list it seems to me that there’s less kill-based achievements in HoT giving mastery points than world bosses in core Tyria (although you could legitimately claim that meta events like the octovine battle in Tarir are comparable to world bosses like the Karka Queen).
What’s with people using JPs as an example, as if they give a ton of points. It’s only Hidden Garden and the Wastes JPs that give them, IIRC.
I’d actually like it if more JPs (and some Explorer achievs) gave Mastery points. I mean, even Not So Secret doesn’t give you one.

Not so secret is a requirement for the dive master achievement, which gives a mastery point.

+1 to this. I have a total of 24 points and nothing more to level, since all other points
are either FotM or extreme grindy stuff.
Not that i really need Legendary of FotM masterys, when i don’t play fractals, but
its still annoying when all the exp no goes into nothing.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

That’s a perfect description of what is wrong with mastery points for Tyria.
5 characters of 5 different races, then choose 3 different orders to 40..just to get some mastery points. 22 mastery points tied behind that….no wonder I’m so short of points.
Story achievements are a complete pain to do, so that’s another 8 I’ll never see.
Now I understand why out of the 66 ‘available’ I am so woefully short. Guess my next job will be rolling characters in each race and enduring the personal story for each of them to 30, 3 to 40, and choose one to finish the whole boring yawn fest on.
I had around 29 points when HoT was released. Does World Completion count? Because my main has World Completion.

Don’t see this as a job, give the stories a chance.
First of, if you haven’t done any story (if you have, you should already have at least 7 of those 22 points), it’s a breeze going through the story on an equipped lvl 80, and you have some decent loot on the way. The lootbags alone that you get from a full story run have a good chance of unidentified dyes, and the low-level crafting bags also give a batch of rare crafting mats (like soft wood, iron, and wool from the t2 ones). Add to that a couple of black lion chest keys, some karma skins (if you’re into wardrobe filling), and even a free exotic Arah headpiece for the final mission.
Even if you do the story on new characters, the fact that each arch is now set at one level instead of spread over a level range means you get a whole story chapter at once and can take in the story much better than before. There are several chapters giving lore background or simply funny little stories among the racial stories. You’ll be able to meet characters that turn up again in later story missions, as far in as a lvl 80 mission with characters originally introduced in a lvl 10 one.
Personally, the more I’ve seen of this game’s personal story, the more I’ve become interested in it, to the point of making characters for the sole purpose of checking out (or refreshing my memory on) other story branches of all the five races. Try it, it may not be as bad as you think .
do not forget the other half is locked behind horrendous expensive weapon colletions…..
i am kittened as hell about the tyria mastery points. i cannot even finish the legendary mastery at this point.
I logged in on HoT release day and had 50 Core Tyria points already. What were you folks doing with your game time prior to HoT?
I logged in on HoT release day and had 50 Core Tyria points already. What were you folks doing with your game time prior to HoT?
I can’t speak for everyone but I got 38 when HoT was released.
I logged in every day of the game being live, had just over 20k APs, 7.5k hours and multiple characters of all professions. I generally only did what I found to be fun though, so that is most likely the problem.
I don’t play a game to do things I don’t enjoy, for that I have work!
P.S. If they implemented a way to get mastery points for AP’s though to reward the vets for their loyalty I would not complain.
I got 13 … I had earned about a dozen more according to the wiki. At this point I am afraid to do anything more that would earn a MP as I tried something and did not get any MPs.
MPs for AP and/or length in game would be nice. I already passed 5K and a year.
Just as a heads up, the Mastery Points for Personal Story are awarded on a per-chapter basis. So once you complete Chapter 1 and earn the Achievement for it, you’ve earned the Mastery Point for Chapter 1. This includes each different starting storyline: I believe the right names are: Graduation Day, For The Legion!, Crime and Punishment, Rising to the Challenge, and Waking from the Nightmare. Similarly, whichever Order you join, there’s just one Mastery Point there.
Hopefully this helps clarify the total number of Mastery Points you should be expecting from your previous accomplishments in Tyria. That said, the different stories really are fantastic, and should definitely be experienced, but for your own pleasure, and not for Mastery Points.
If any of you still think you are missing MPs from Achievements you’ve completed, let us know via the in-game Bug Report tool and we’ll try to identify if there’s a bigger issue happening.

Great response, I agree. We have a right to express our opinion in the forum as long as our posts are within the rules.
I am in a very small guild of friends who used to play regularly. We all had different schedules but every now and then our schedules aligned and we enjoyed playing GW2 together. As HoT approached, Anet started neglecting the game. No new stuff or even replay of old Festivals until the expansion came out. After a while, my friends and I started playing less and less. Finally, Halloween and then the Expansion. We come back only to discover that Anet has decided that our Guild doesn’t count. Since 3 of us are hardly on at one time, and we only party up about half the time as we are often working on different stuff, our Guild is dead. So much for playing as I enjoy.
And the same goes for Mastery Points. It isn’t a question of whether I can find a way to do them. It is a question of whether it will be fun.
What are these ‘Story Points’?
I see no MPs at all listed for the Personal Story in the Achievement log under Story Journal, unlike those in LS2 and HOT which show MP icons against each chapter.

This is pretty disturbing: HoT has been out for a month, and I’ve seen countless posts regarding missing Mastery Points, yet we should file Bug Reports to help them decide IF there is a bigger issue? I assumed they were already working on the bigger issue or maybe had already found a fix!

With all due respect, Sir/Ms., your sincere disappointment isn’t shared by many, even if valid from your particular point of view.
Further, I imagine many ANet employees disagree with: “as HoT approached, ANet started neglecting the game.” You then proceed to state things that have nothing to do with authentic neglect-a more precise wording would have been “ANet started to focus less on the things I (or my friends) like”, which at least is a factual statement.
It’s annoying, if only because any random reader may take your words at full value and actually think the developers do not care for their own game, which seems VERY far from the truth from the most neutral standpoint.
I also am part of a small Guild (and an even smaller before that), and do not share your views-people just like what they like, and it’s highly unlikely that ANet can just satisfy these immense number of likes in the community. People change , get busy, life moves on; and while I agree it’s a bummer to not be able to share these “family-like” moments anymore, in my case I really can’t fault the game for my old friends’ lack of interest.

By contrast the story achievement rewards are considered hard y a lot of people
You know, I have done all jumping puzzles but the one in Silverwastes.

Really? You polled all the players in the game? Can I see the data?

Are you serious? Did you read at all (even the small sentence you are quoting)? And was I disrespectful to you in any way or fashion as you are being to me there?
Ahhh, so instead of 7, there’s one per chapter completed and one for any Order.
Oh well, lots of cutscenes to skip and boring dialogie to get through then, and hope I haven’t already finished the entire story on another toon on my main account.
Then it’s hunt the silly points- like managing not to be hit by any vines during a particular event and other intensely annoying things (one bit of renderign or lag and that’s it, start over).

How am I being disrespectful? I asked a question. You state that my disappointment isn’t shared by many. How could you know that if you hadn’t received opinions from them?
