dmg meters
A damage meter will just show how unbalanced classes are.
Its better to keep the ilusion.

I won’t mind at all if it is working only in the Mists where are the dummies. But atleast we will have something…
I think GW1 had something like that on the battle isles. I think it would be cool in GW2 as well.
Doesn’t the combat log show your damage? I don’t really know, as such things are of little interest to me, but I see how much damage I do to mobs, and I know the combat log keeps a record of what damage I do, and what damage I take.

I would like to have something for my personal improvement and testing as well but judging by the stupid elitism around the forums revolving around DPS I believe it will do more harm than good to the game and specially to the community and casual players (who btw, have little to no voice in the forums).

Plus it would make people focus on DPS more than they already do now, and everybody should be doing more then just DPS. As far as I am concernced, if you are focusing on making your damage as high as possible, you are being useless to the group because there are many other things a player should be doing.

This a 1000 times.
And please no “who cares about PVE balance u can kill the mob anyways”.

No lol. ATM there is nothing that would require anything than maximizing dps and ability to dodge.
Even if you could test your DPS/effective healing, this game isn’t really designed for meters, the PvE is so much more chaotic in some instances, you spend a lot of time dodging and moving out of red circles, add the fact that your group composition directly affects these numbers as well (Vuln, might, fury uptime, blocks), the DPS meter will always show different.
Then there’s players being stupid with it, causing miscommunication, that’ll be there u can bet.
At least in Oct 15 patch they are improving the damage floaters for conditions and consolidating all the damage into 1 number & icon for each condition type.

Well normally dmg meters are more extensive. They include many other things too:
dmg done
dmg take
healing done
Healing overtime
Overhealing
DOT
Threat
If any, now that i give a second thought to it; id like to see if there is a balance where a player who can stand more hits than a full zerk and dodge less can apply more dps since he is constantly at it. just theoricrafting
I used to be opposed to damage meters, but now that GW2 is so alt-unfriendly and gear/build variety unfriendly, I want a damage meter so I know which gear to spend all my time grinding out.

Of all of you, only this guy put it in simple. A direct WoW quote to show the rotten dmg meter discrimination.
In my WoW time:
“LFM BWL, after hall 3 low dps kicked”
GW2 in future:
“LFM ping gear, pre boss fights lowest dmg kicked from group”
Bad already with:
“LFM 48 55ar guards only!!!!!11111”
Scr3w damage meters.
I wouldn’t mind an area where you can whack on a foe endlessly (that can be critted and have conditions inflicted upon unlike the useless dummies in LA) that reports your damage per second
I can get on the bandwagon of a personal DPS meter, but a DPS meter that displays party DPS I am against.
Improving your dps, great, fine by me. Beating players with a DPS meter stick, no thanks.
There is a DPS display, but it is a static stat currently in game.

I does not matter if it’s for personal use only.
Within a few months people will have determined the best builds and professions and then it will be put on a website. And once that website goes live it will become common knowledge.
And once it is common knowledge that x profession isn’t up to par with the others it is bye bye to invites of any activity that requires a certain amount of damage.

Arena Net does not want these types of meters because they do not want to divide the player base. They are trying to avoid gear check, yet, they begun the gear treadmill through ascended gears.

Hello October 2012
This is already in game, been there for a year. Gear ping requirements, zerker warriors only, on and on. Elitist jerks don’t wait to be created, they are born.

Imagine we had a tool like Recount which gives an accurate accounting of damage. Then imagine you are a full condition necro maxed out for bleeds/duration. What would you think if you saw that all you were doing was “white” damage and nothing at all related to bleeds?
Even if damage meters were fine in terms of design philosophy, the game really couldn’t support them in its current state.
If you want to test builds, there’s always the golems in sPvP.

so rather then someone realize how little they contribute and have the opportunity to change the better answer is just to let them delude themselves into feeling good about themselves?

Agreed.
Give damage / gear measuring tools and elitist jerks will standardize them.

There is such thing called ‘’Damage over Time’’ (DoT)
Bleeding, burning, poison and such things will be put there

There is one little thing called ‘’Damage over time’’ (DoT)
So every bleeding, burning and such things will be showed there
GW2 does not account for DoT by player, it’s done via stacks on mobs. So, in any common grouping of players only one full condition player is actually doing DoT, say, in terms of bleeds.
I’m not arguing for or against damage meters. My point is that damage meters only make sense when damage is accounted for by player. GW2 is not at a point where it makes any sense to report damage by player since it doesn’t manage damage by player.
If you want to test builds, there’s always the golems in sPvP.
Yes but when I can’t compare the whole dmg I did while dpsing for 2 minutes the golem what is the point then?
I repeat i do NOT mind if i am able to use dps meter only in the Mists and no where else.
But I want to have the tools to compare Build A while dpsing 2-3 minutes the golem with build B while dpsing the golem for the same amount of time.
When i can’t do that then i can’t decide which build is stronger even if it’s better only by little.

This isnt an MMO.
a game that can be measured by a damage meter is a boring one
No no no no no no no……..no!
Damage meters, even those that show your own, will eventually lead to required-dps-zerk builds that are required for speed runs and the like. The devs can use these meters to create balance, but I don’t want them in this game. What drew me to GW2 (and GW) was that it’s not like WoW. I don’t want to feel like I have to adhere to a cookie-cutter build or else get kicked.

You can just do it the other way.
In your perspective, the damage is the variable over a fixed time. With the golems, the opposite is true: the damage is fixed whereas the time is variable. It’s an equally valid form of DPS testing since DPS is damage/time: Dealing 6,000 damage in 1 minute versus 6,600 damage in 1 minute (10% increase) is perfectly identical to going from dealing 6,000 damage in 1 minute to dealing 6,000 damage in 54.54 seconds.
In fact, that’s how a lot of the ideal DPS setups were discovered in GW2. I remember Strife posting on the warrior forum with videos where he killed a Veteran Risen Giant over and over again while timing the kills.
I would like to see this in a form where each individual player can decide whether or not to “enable” or “disable” it on their own end.
So if you want to see your DPS you can enable it, and it’ll show up for everyone else in the party as well.
However, if you don’t want others to criticize your DPS, then just disable it.
Chances are it won’t impact any on the people who are afraid of people telling them to enable DPS meter or kick, ‘cos those are likely the people who will say “Berserker or kick”, and chances are if you don’t want to show your DPS, you’re not using Berserker gear.
It’s not perfect, but to me this would be better than no DPS meter at all, and the only possible way to test DPS is on the invincible golem in the mist by timing how long it takes you to kill it.
Minister of Fear [80 Necromancer] @Far Shiverpeaks EU
I’m against them. Lately I’ve noticed a shift in the forums from “what should I do” or “here’s what I do” to “here’s what you must do”.
A dmg meter will only make that worse.

I don’t mind this solution either.Enable it or disable it doesn’t matter to me as long i have the option to use the bloody dps meter.
In Other MMOs i often went to the dummies and practiced there different things and after that i was looking at the results.

Thanks for the advice Olba.
You don’t give the toxic elements tools to be even more toxic with.
You want to test builds? Grab pen and paper and do the math manually.

Sorry but i don’t live in the 90’s anymore. When there are better options available it’s a common sense to use them

What you are talking about is no longer a DPS-meter issue. It is called class balance and it is non existant in gw2.
personal dps meters pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaase
GW1 does have this feature but you attack the master of damage in the isle of the nameless and he reports in chat how long it took to kill him and what your DPS was.
Just put time stamps on the combat log and allow us to parse the combat log. Let players do the rest. It’s not too much to ask. The system already has the time stamps. It’s not going to increase server load at all.
I want it so rangers know how garbage they are in dungeons and we can stop the arguement about why we don’t like them in dungeons.
We have tier gear that’s grind, expensive, and not friendly to making multiple sets or fitting up multiple alts.
Therefore I want a DPS meter so I know what to grind out.
As someone already mentioned (and every one ignored): There is a combat log.

bring him back.

First of all combat log is not the same as a dps meter and second GW2’s combat log is awful.

This conversation is brought up now and again and doesn’t go anywhere.
On the one side you have the guys that still suffer from PTSD from their days of being denied from WoW raids, and on the other side you have the guys that enjoy theory crafting and min/maxing who would love to know the underlying calculations behind their spells.
Then you have the trolls/jerks/bad mannered that inevitably control every aspect of the game and determine what we get based on their potential to abuse it. Their outspoken nature and eager willingness to call you out on the smallest mistakes makes players cower in droves in reaction to their criticisms and as a result we get the “who cares how much dmg you did if it’s dead” sort of compromises.
I want it so rangers know how garbage they are in dungeons and we can stop the arguement about why we don’t like them in dungeons.
Exactly this is the reason why i’m absolutely against dmg meters. People will start to believe that damage is the only thing that matters in this game and we will have even more of those 1337 zerkers that watch the fight while laying in the dust.
I’ve played many MMORPGs and things like these had an absolutely terrible influence on them

the idea is that meters would show all sorts of info, so when someone says “hey noob why you no dps” you could say, “well look at all the effective healing i was doing.”
that is a non-issue though, because all of your problems could be solved by grouping with people that arent jerks—- join a guild, stop trying to hop in the “lfm zerkers only” groups, or do what i do and join the “all classes welcome” groups.
