I play mostly without, the things the people that make the video use as landmarks are not what I naturally use so they are a hindrance. If I want to make something text usually works better as well.
Specific things can be useful in video form but mostly not.
Those people writing everything should be in game, great in theory but think how big Duffy’s database is, add that to the DAT file and have staff tied up you are just asking for problems.
I also just like running around with no goals except to run around and see what happens.

I used youtube for few JPs maybe…. not sure why would you need it for vistas etc. – they are pretty obvious for most part.

There are some exceptions. The one in Lightfoot Passage in Straits of Devastation for example.

Most vistas and even most jumping puzzles I don’t have a problem with but that one I absolutely could not work out, and even the description on the Wiki didn’t help. It turned out there was one branch I was almost literally not seeing – I’m not sure why but it just didn’t register in my mind as something I could stand on, and without that there was no way to get to the vista. (Of course it’s much simpler now gliding is in the game.)

I think the key point is that while most people can do most things without a guide it’s nice to know it’s there if you need it. I doubt many people are constantly on youtube, following it step by step and never doing anything without checking there first, but it’s good that the information is there should you need it.

(Having said that I did once meet a guy in GW1 who refused to ever go to a new location without someone to run him there, or to even attempt a quest without watching a walkthrough first. It turned out that was his first MMO and a “friend” had told him that was the only way anyone ever got anything done. Unsurprisingly the friend made all their gold charging people to be escorted to new locations, so it’s not hard to imagine where that idea came from.)

Uuuuh. I just walk around and explore? Why would I be in any hurry to find things?

Is that how you live your live your life??

Just kidding. Reason to hurry would be a goal like “want to get the gliding skill” or “really would like to use that thermal tube/rope mastery, so I need to get those mastery points.” Or if you want to see how that elite trait plays out, then you need enough heroe points. If you just walk around and explore, you will do that without those nice features in your game time. For me, it’s more fun to play with auto-loot enabled, but that required some work. If I hadn’t focused on that until I got it, I would still have to run to corpses and click buttons, which is less fun

If real life had waypoints (so I could always get back home no matter how lost I got) and preferably infinite resurrections too that is absolutely how I’d live my life.

It actually can be quite fun and a good way to find things you never knew were in your town. Although with my horrible sense of direction I only really felt confident doing it in Aberystwyth (where if you get lost you just keep going and you’ll hit either the sea or the hills soon) until last year when I finally got a smart phone (which has GPS and a map).

Internet in general can be useful only for the annoying achievements such as collect X piece of boring paper in an area. For everything else, the core game you should NEVER need youtube or anything. The game is doing a great job at telling you what to do (even probably telling you way too much what to do).

My problem with doing that (in-game) is I get caught up in the “what should I accomplish” mentality cause there are so many goals. So. Many. Goals.

I play a game like Skyrim and it’s not that hard for me to just enjoy wandering about. Here, it seems like everything is an objective in one way or another.

Or words to that effect.

Jumping puzzles, achievements, mastery points, hero points… yeah, having to do research for a game feel likes a chore.

Interesting, that’s exactly how I feel about raiding in general.

It frustrates me, that to do / get anything cool in rewards you need to either use youtube or dulfy for answers, this is mainly due to the really poor explanations in game.
I find it impossible to craft anything decent or get rewards via achievement without using a third party.
I tend to come back and do the new Living World realses, then try the achievements… then stop playing as it feels like a chore to look up each achievement … it becomes the opposite of fun.

Heh, I think you accidentally forgot or duplicated something. :P

But hrm… I dunno. GW2 just isn’t that MMO. It’s a MMO I enjoy because it is less structured and more “walk around and see what you find”. If I wanted the more goal-driven design, I’d still be playing WoW (same with if I wanted to do raiding a lot, they just do it a lot better plus they allow modding their UI) or even FF14. But that’s the beauty of it, I can have different games for different desires, and GW2 is the one I use for open world unstructured exploration.

It suits itself well for that with the general “light” and “casual” approach and the general plethora of random disconnected things thrown at us.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

But why? Why not just go out into the map and explore? Why not try to find things for yourself rather than following other people’s trails?

The most fun I have with new maps (and especially with the latest one) in this game is exploration. I can spend weeks going around trying to find all the paths and interesting bits and pieces. There’s so much to see and hear and discover in this game, you’re missing out on most of it if you just blindly follow in somebody else’s steps.

I am not above checking the wiki (or in rare cases even Dulfy) occasionally, but usually not until I have explored the map to the fullest. And full exploration of the detailed maps this game has isn’t done in an hour or a day, or even a week. Take your time and enjoy the maps, it’s a lot more fun than just spoiling every discovery through outside sources as fast as possible to be able to complain about “not enough content” afterwards.

If content I dislike (like scavenger hunts) has a reward I do want… Youtube to the rescue!

Why would I waste time not enjoying myself when I can cut to the chase and get it over with ASAP?

But you are missing out on other things in exchange, like masteries or fancy armor/weapons or fractal content etc. You can’t have all of it at the same time. You postpone all of this stuff because exploring comes first for you. Others want the fun stuff first and then start exploring. As I said, exploring with specific masteries is more fun for me than without them.

Actually I’m not. Masteries come so quickly I had maxed and unlocked the recent one when I had barely even entered the new map. By the time I know what’s going on I have long finished whatever progression there is that has an actual impact on gameplay and exploration.

As for fancy armor and weapons, does it really impact your enjoyment of your in-game time if you get your fancy cosmetics a week later? I’m having a hard time grasping that idea, especially when it comes to cosmetic rewards for basic gameplay (if we can agree on the fact that exploration is basic gameplay).

Of course I want that ascended druid stone backpack, the skin is gorgeous. But I want to enjoy getting it. Just having it, or worse having to do stuff I don’t enjoy to get it, just isn’t worth any digital shiny. It’ll probably take me a few weeks to get it, since I have only yet found three of the four druids I need to visit for the first level collection, and don’t really know (nor do I want to know) what the next three collections require, but I’d rather not have that skin than do unfun chores like look up every detail that others figured out.

If you want to look it up that’s your choice, but don’t try to blame it on anybody else if you choose to do this in a way that you don’t find fun.

I gave up on doing the scavenger hunts without YouTube, most of them have things hidden in such ridiculous locations that finding them on my own won’t happen in this lifetime.

Same goes for some of the overly long and overly complicated/convoluted Jumping Puzzles. Chalice of Tears comes to mind, it’s not hard to do if you know the way, but as far as I can tell the only way to figure out where to go is trial and error. In contrast to Not So Secret, where it’s relatively clear where you need to go but the entire thing is just so obnoxious that you’ll have broken a few keyboards before you make it there. (only JP I actually just gave up on so far, especially knowing I’d have to do it twice for the diving goggles).

Where is there anything that states "you must look at youtube for anything gw2 related " ? Is anyone being forced to use dulfy , youtube ? Can we say the same about wiki which often has little spoilers or hints ? At the end of the day no one is being forced and its our own decision to use or not use – so i cant see why theres a problem or issue . Is it any different from asking in mapchat where something is , joining a hp train etc ?

People have used walkthroughs for ages. But because it’s youtube it’s weird?

I personally use youtube or wiki very little or as less as possible. Unless Im trying to find a recipe or trying to get an achievement that is worded weirdly so you have no clue as what you really need to do.

For me I say, thank goodness for guides. I’d never find anything if not for them. Although, I have to admit I’m map dyslexic and routinely confuse east/west and sometimes north/south. To get from one spot to another I have to place markers on the map, even on maps I’m familiar with such as Queensdale. Anything more complex than that is hopeless. (Why I hate being the group leader. I look at map, see desired route is east. Confuse east with west. Tell everyone in group it’s west and then head off in some totally different random direction because I forgot to put a marker down on the map to tell me which way to start running).

Thank goodness for the ability to put marks on maps as well as guides.
