easter eggs and references?
When you first wake up as a Sylvari there’s a “One does not simply…” line (…wake up and fight a dragon)
Yaks Bend
Could be wrong here but im currently watching this doc on netflix about an adventurer that got lost in the amazon named percy fawcett while searching for a lost city he called z or whatever. it could be the idea behind the 2 fawcett puzzles. funny really as im doing the puzzle now im like wait this guys name is fawcett hmmm. anyway could be wrong but he was an adventurer. but the fawcett in the puzzle seems to be more of a pirate or something.
That’s probably more to do with Justin Fawcett, employee of ArenaNet. I bet the trap that gets you the “Fawcett’s Revenge” was his idea.
ok that would make more sense i guess cool.
I heard this last night from a personal story npc, “My sword, my sword, my kingdom for a sword. If I had a kingdom.”
This is a line similar to Shakespeare’s play Richard III
we have to do things others may qualify as “evil”.
~Krunch Bloodrage, Looking For Group
By Crucible of Eternity in the water there are ‘ill-tempered barracudas’ this makes me think of Austin Powers. Dr. Evil asks about the sharks with laserbeams on there head to find out, from Number2, that they only have mutated seabass. Dr. Evil asks if they are at least ill-tempered

that reminds me, the new minidungeon on fireheart rise has to be a james bond reference.
it’s a mad scientist’s laboratory, inside a volcano, with a tank full of sharks for him (or her, in GW2’s case) to throw you in.
Sorry, but I don’t remember exactly where this is, but there’s a pirate guy that you follow around in an event. The event has a few steps, then he runs off to his home point after. I followed him one time to see where he was going.
When he gets to his home spot in a busted up ship/town/townmadeofships he starts belting out “I am the very model of a modern pirate general…” (pirates of penzance) or something along those lines. He actually goes through an entire round of this song modified for the game and NPC. It was one of the most hilarious surprises I happened across and loved sitting there laughing my kitten off at the lyrics they came up.
Great stuff….I wish I could remember exactly where that was..
EDIT: looked it up..wasn’t hard to find…imagine that…his name is Captain Penzan. You Anet guys are great.

THIS had me laughing so hard! The Pirates of Penzan is a classic opera famous for those fast cadence tunes such as “I am the very model of a modern pirate general …” So Funny!
In general I am really impressed with the amount of effort the team put into detail. One time I found a group of grape harvest nodes behind a pirate den, and I happened to get hit by a patrolling npc called the vinter pirate.

Isn’t “Shines” from EQ???…don’t remember lol
EQ2 actualy. Shinies were what players called the collectables that could be found laying on the ground. You “found” them by seeing a shiny animation on the ground and picking it up. (Even grubbs were shiny apparently.)
I love all the random refrences in this game.

It could also be a reference to Soylent Green (movie). I believe there were at least two colors (green and red).
Please give us a keyring…
I can´t believe no one mentioned the reference to Diablo on the new random world events.
You find a chest in the open world, you open it, out comes a skritt with loads of bags on his back and starts running.
You chase after him and loot keeps fropping and you can’t let him escape to get a final chest.
That’s an obvious reference ofc and at the time I got that achievement I thought it was common but seems not many people saw that skritt yet :P
Another obvious are the way some chests open borderlands style.
I ctrl+F’d Judgmental Quaggan, and found no results.
You all disappoint me.
The whole Crucible of Eternity dungeon felt like a Metroid-ish experience to me. It had this mysterious feeling. And the Quaggans in the tanks at the beginning (Metroids in tanks?). It’s a cool dungeon.

What’s surrounding this somewhat unremarkable landmass?
Sea Scorpions – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sea_Scorpion
lol just saw this one in straits of devistation behold agent kindlefire lol
I don’t remember exactly where it is but in one of the slyvari areas there was an NPC that says he’s “a leaf on the wind”.
EDIT: for those who don’t know or remember it’s from Firefly
Also the personal storyline “Can’t Stop the Signal”.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
I found Gwen’s tomb and read some information about her. It was a great rpg moment for me especially since my main is the descendant of my GW1 character.

Actually I would say its reference goes all the way back to Golden Axe.
I saw a couple of references in the new dungeon, Fractal of the Mists. In one of the maps you can see an imprisoned giant. That looks like a hero from the movie Watchmen. Also, there is a map with a jumping puzzle, asura-like where you can find a reference to guitar hero.
There was a golem in Soren Draa that said the bubblegum reference from Duke Nukem.
Karka Hatchlings are facehuggers from the Alien series. But they look like Mites or something.
(edited by Moderator)
One of the fractal bosses, the one with the five golems, I’m sure the golem names are various references and at least 1 Borderlands 2 reference.
The Forsaken Fortune explorer puzzle where your in total darkness and repel Skelk with the light from torches reminded me of the movie Pitch Black. :s
In lions arch by fort marriner there is a mini arena with guards around it and the arena is red like the arena nnet logo.
I can’t believe you guys missed these:
- Asura personal storyline (Infinity Ball): You go to a place with a Megahedron Collider. There are asura outside protesting it, claiming that turning it on will destroy the world and to “think of the progeny”. Reference to the Large Hadron Collider and the controversy that surrounded it at first.
- Ben Tenstrikes is a reference to the Ben 10 series.
- Necromancers sometimes say “I choose you!”/“Return!”, which you should recognize as referencing Pokemon.
- Shaemoor Graveyard: “Kah Meena, His will be the sword that pierces the Mists.” Apparently the writers really like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
- Professor Gorr is named after Al Gore, and his introductory mission (A Bold New Theory) is a parody of An Inconvenient Truth.
Found maps of Cantha and Elona hanging on a wall in a fort in Metrica Province.
Image provided.
P.S. Sorry, my character is enormous.
I think i found a few.
- In Hoelbar are two norns called Skuld and Urd, referencing nordic mythology there
- The dredge chests are opening the same way as the Borderlands lootchests
- in the rival storyline of the norn you fight against a Mikkel Toivosson, a fist fighter. Sounds like Mike Tyson to me.
In Snowden Drifts there’s a group of Norn called the Mannerheim Steadholders. They don’t make awesome orchestra music, but I’m sure if you get them drunk enough they’ll try.
There is a white named chicken (which you can usually one-shot) in one of the Charr lands, that, if you hit it, it loses it’s hp, regens immediately, and it summons “angry chickens” to chase you down and kill you, lol. Legend of Zelda for the win!

haha that totally made my day!!!
EDIT: Remembered another one!!. The boat from “The Goonies” is at the end of a jumping puzzle!!
The Engineer stole several of Data’s gadgets as well. Such as the Personal Battering Ram and the Slick Shoes.
I did an event where I had to escort some kids to a hidden treasure and on the way they meet and befriend an etten, I dont recall the names but it made me think of the goonies with the etten taking the role of Sloth.
——
There was an event, or maybe it was a renown mission where you help ogers tame new pets.
Some times they would reply with a line similar to “hug him and squeeze him and name him George.” Which some of you may recognize as a line from a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Hugo the Abominable Snowman wants to keep Bugs as a pet and name him George.
I recognized that right off the bat too. LOL Loved it I use my ram all the time.
It may be a co-incidence, or a reference to something completely different but…
Frequently when you kill Risen they say kitten your eyes". That’s the title to an Etta James song.
On edit: One word got kittened out. But if you see the video you’ll recognize the line.
Actually I’d say this is more likely a “Young Frankenstein” reference.

In the Grove there is an argument between an asura male and a sylvari female where the asura accuses the sylvari of messing up his golem by asking it too many questions.
“The question about turtles in the desert was bad enough, but then you had to bring up it’s mother!”
This is a reference to the Voight-Kampff test in Blade Runner.
Engineers will periodically refer to their healing turrets as “dispensers.” Reference to the engineer from Team Fortress 2.
In the Grove, neart the Asura gate, there is an Asura and Sylvari talking about a Turing test of sorts for the Golem.

This quote comes from They Live first.
No one has mentioned the Zelda Ocarina of Time song in The Grove!
the champion rabbit in the asura fractal. reference to monthy phyton – holy grail, the scene with the killer rabbit.

I am not 100% sure about this one,but when i saw Steam Creatures in Lornar’s Pass, first thing i thought of where the Reapers from Mass Effect. All of them are robotic versions of normal mobs you can find, and there is a an area next to them called Reapers Gate.
One of the final bosses in Sorrows Embrace makes a Terminator reference while he sinks into the lava.
I love this one.
A great one is Tybalt in the personal stories sets up apples as explosive and references the ‘this is not meth’ scene in Breaking Bad.
In one of the Fractals, the one with the flaming rocks that roll down the hill that you have to avoid, there is a skeleton at the end one of the wooden bridges wearing a fedora
the champion rabbit in the asura fractal. reference to monthy phyton – holy grail, the scene with the killer rabbit.

That could be possible, but i think this reference is in Timberline Falls. Near one of the hearts, there is a cave. in it you will find tribal signs and blood and a chest with a rabbit in front.
you can open the chest safely. However if you kill the rabbit, it spawns a Champion that will most likely kill you.
from the setting i guess this one is closer as a refference
Wow. No one caught The Hunger Games gravestone in Ebonhawke?
Rue, our little songbird?
In Orr, I noticed a risen stop, raise his arm point and scream……Invasion Of the Boddy Snatchers (Donald Sutherland)?
The Windmill King who mistakes you for a dragon has to be a reference to Don Quixote
Here is a reference to the Idiocracy film character “Not Sure”, a charr NPC named “Naat Surestrike”. Made me laugh.
(edited by Dym Mahk.5768)
In the Ebonhawke cemetery:
“Morgan Decker
1239-1274
The final victim of the Oxcart Killer”
I lol’d at that one
LOLcats reference in Diessa Plateau at the Meatoberfest place. One of the charr is advertising cheese filled meat and a cub walks up and says, “Can I has cheesy meats?” followed by the vendor saying, “Hungry cub is hungry.” Obviously a canihascheeseburger.com reference.
