easter eggs and references?
Just finished HotW p3 … there is an area called Geoffrey’s Tubes.
Another little Professor Yakkington Easter Egg. On the back of his gravestone in Ebonhawke is some writing.
It translates into “I told you I was sick.”
EDIT: This message also appears on the night shift at Lurka’s Lab gravestone also in Ebonhawke.
EDIT: 2 I found another message on the back of a gravestone in Ebonhawke. This one says, “Grenth bless the soil, Grenth bless the stone, Grenth bless the silence, So leave me alone!”
Went to Shaemoor and translated all the gravestones. Most of them has nothing, others had the following:
If you read this
you are standing
on my head
Grenth bless the soil
Grenth bless the stone
Grenth bless the silence
So leave me alone
I took the time
to stand in line
to best a mighty foe
but boredom struck
I’m out of luck
and now I lie below
Where’s

Rest in Peace (in a banner)

*These are misspelled on the stones, I translated them here exactly. ‘Scrybe’ is probably intentionally ironic, but I have no answer for why ‘resurect’ is misspelled.
Sorry, but I don’t remember exactly where this is, but there’s a pirate guy that you follow around in an event. The event has a few steps, then he runs off to his home point after. I followed him one time to see where he was going.
When he gets to his home spot in a busted up ship/town/townmadeofships he starts belting out “I am the very model of a modern pirate general…” (pirates of penzance) or something along those lines. He actually goes through an entire round of this song modified for the game and NPC. It was one of the most hilarious surprises I happened across and loved sitting there laughing my kitten off at the lyrics they came up.
Great stuff….I wish I could remember exactly where that was..
EDIT: looked it up..wasn’t hard to find…imagine that…his name is Captain Penzan. You Anet guys are great.

This is actually a dual reference. Mass Effect 2 did if first:

Could be wrong here but im currently watching this doc on netflix about an adventurer that got lost in the amazon named percy fawcett while searching for a lost city he called z or whatever. it could be the idea behind the 2 fawcett puzzles. funny really as im doing the puzzle now im like wait this guys name is fawcett hmmm. anyway could be wrong but he was an adventurer. but the fawcett in the puzzle seems to be more of a pirate or something.
That’s a funny coincidence I think. Pretty sure it was named after Justin Fawcett, the map artist who built the level.
‘Scrybe’ is probably intentionally ironic,
Scrybe is my internet handle.
I got two.
One of the Sylvari Personal story missions is based off of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Someone mentioned dredge chests as a borderlands reference, but the boss in Sorrows Embrace is likely a reference to the final boss in Borderlands. Both are named the Destroyer of Worlds and both come out of an icy cave. Reinforced by the whole borderlands chest thing.
Leader of the 3 man Pop Up Pirates(POMF)
Pretty OK Elementalist

Destroyer of X was a major thing back in GW1. We’ll probably see a lot more of it when the Primordus expansion rolls around.
While I was looking for hints for making precursors I made a few translations as well, it may be a good idea to create a new thread for all the New Krytan or Asuran language stuff that we find out there
The pray to Grenth seems to be used a few more tombstones.
In the Cornucopian Fields (Gendarran fields, north of Lion’s Arch), there is a bar with some notes in a column… something like:
Everyone
Stop
Shouting!

if you are
still standing
you need more
dwarven ale
——— and my favorite:
don’t
drink
and
quest
I’m now trying to translate something from the Chamber of Secrets that was written in Asuran, but my screenshot was from too far away and it is quite difficult, I have to go back there and make new screenshots…
I got two.
One of the Sylvari Personal story missions is based off of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
extra points, one of the characters is called Gairwen :P
someone pointed out the green knight questline has a plants vs zombies reference.
that could expand to the entire overarching plot, sylvari are by far the most worried about the risen (the other races have their own dragon minions they focus on, charr have branded, norn have icebrood, asura have destroyers but nowhere near the amount as the other races, humans have destroyers and risen, sylvari have risen)

Think about it. The Scribe couldn’t spell.
Kyxha 80 Ranger, Sokar 80 Necro
Niobe 80 Guardian, Symbaoe 45 Ele
No one noticed the Asura gates are actually from Stargate? They’re an almost exact copy.
When you ask Mr. Sparkles a question he cannot answer, he says “Insufficient data at this time”. Clearly a reference to Data from Star Trek.
You probably noticed that dredge seem to have Russian names.
What is more, Sorrow’s Embrace is a dungeon about Moletariat and revolution of the working class, a reference to Proletarian revolution.
So, dredge – communists?

“told you i was sick” Are the words written on the late spike millagans head stone . Maybe the verse is also a reference
‘Scrybe’ is probably intentionally ironic,

AH, I see. I thought it was a joke about the Scribe’s poor spelling.
Skills are full of references:
Shield of the Avenger – Captain America, The Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D.
Sword of Justice – A reference to the sword that Lady Justice is holding
Call of the Wild – The book ‘The Call of the Wild’ by Jack London, about a sled dog named buck
Dart – A reference to a great white shark attack, where it ambush seals from below at high speed, and hits them mid-body to knock them out
Search and Rescue – The SAR rescue teams
Thunderclap – A headache that happens very rapidly
Trick Shot – A type of pool game
Scorpion Wire – The signature move of Scorpion from Mortal Combat
The Prestige – The movie The Prestige
Portal – The game Portal

Also, the scream that the Claw of Jormag makes sounds exactly like Godzilla.
Edited: I mixed up the names of two missions in the personal story.
I had a mission(Temple of the Forgotten God) where I had to swim to an underwater area, and after completing that one I got a mission called “Through the Looking Glass”, but I mixed up the names of those two, which made me believe the underwater mission was a reference to Lost.

No one’s mentioned the Ghost Busters event?
In the Charr starting area, near the Old Duke’s Estate, there is a Charr and an Asuran arguing about a new protype weapon that needs testing. The Charr is part of of a legion of Spectrals which if you find the rest of them have interesting set of names. The weapon he wants you to test in the dynamic event is to capture ghosts and bring them back into a ghost vault. 8D
When my sister and I found this we ran around screaming “Don’t cross the beams!” There is also a POI that takes you to this so called ghost vault!

If i recall correctly Mal’s Leap has a hidden Stargate only accessible if you find the underwarter inquest base and swim into it at a weird angle.
Yes i said stargate because its nothing like an asura portal.

Portal – The game Portal
Sorry, but imo you’re just over thinking it. Trick shot is just a tricky shot and thunderclap meaning something isn’t a reference. Also, sword of justice… well, I’d say it’s just a sword of justice, reference to so an ambiguous concept is hardly a reference, and Portal… it’s just a portal, that’s what the thing’s called, don’t see any reference to the game there. Making references out of everything isn’t finding them
Knut Whitebear is a reference to this lovely little fella’:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZLKb_5S21EAnd there is a personal story mission called “Through the looking glass” which is a reference to Lost.
Kids these days…
Through The Looking Glass was the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (better known by the name Alice in Wonderland) both by Lewis Carol and published almost 150 years before Lost was even thought of.

No one noticed the Asura gates are actually from Stargate? They’re an almost exact copy.
I have but that is nothing… When you listen to the background music it actually resembles music from Stargate, LotR and RtCW!!!
Now that is an easter egg…or is it copyright infringement?
Do not click this link!
I personally love the meatober fest when a char cub says “I can has cheesy meat?” and the mama charr says “hungry cub is hungry”
LOL every time
There’s a pair of Asura at the labs of Goldenlight Hallow (Timberline Falls, Fisher’s Eye Bridges) that are worried about their impatient customers. The conversation goes something like
“Sir, the buyers are getting restless about their orders. What should I tell them?”
“Tell them the prototypes have entered Alpha Testing. No! Wait! Tell them we’ll send out the product ‘when it’s ready!’”
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.
With the new Flame and frost update, AC path 2 also has a Ghost Busters feel now, my guild actually calls our parties by names of the characters in the movie its pretty hilarious.
The second part of Vexa’s lab mini dungeon, where you have to climb platforms and stairs to enter blue portals and fall out of orange ones is a reference to Portal. Also, the way she speaks to you is very GLaDOS like. The little bots might be turrets. Her shark tank is a reference to James Bond, if I recall a guildie saying once.
Also, in the Volcano fractal, if you hug the right wall jumping over the lava to get to the boss, there’s a skeleton clutching a treasure chest in Indiana Jones’ hat.

When the golems sing the Beatles song “Good Morning” I hear it alot when i spawn in wvw.

The ele double dagger skill “Ride the Lightning” has the same name as a Metallica song, which is about death by electric chair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI8xrnOrftM
Not sure if it’s been mentioned already, but I came across a Quaggan quoting The Beatles in Snowden Drifts.
Coo Coo Cachoo!
One might almost be tempted to think that the entire concept of the Quaggans was designed around getting that in… especially since the name of that song, and the lyric immediately preceding the quote, is “I am the walrus” (even though Quaggans more closely resemble Dugongs).
Kyxha 80 Ranger, Sokar 80 Necro
Niobe 80 Guardian, Symbaoe 45 Ele
I don’t know if this one has been posted or even if it is waaay to over taught, but here it is anyway…
In Metrica Province there is an Asura somewhere in the east of the map (forgot exact place). His name is “Krewe Leader Mott” (If i recall correctly).
Take the first syllabel from each word… Krew Lea Mott…
Still not getting there? Invert the order… and adjust some letters…
Mott Lee Crew…
It’s Mötley Crüe!!!! (a band ^^)
I read the whole thread and can’t believe I didn’t see this one! But maybe I just missed it…when you have to pick a race to help out in your order missions, you can choose skritt. You have to stop them from gathering egg things and a skritt runs by you saying “Gather ALL THE THINGS!” It was one of my favorite moments in game and I totally fell in love with the skritt immediately. So. Cute.
Am I the only one who found the hunger games reference in the Stronghold of Ebonhawke? Rue’s grave is in the same grave yard where Gwen’s grave is located.
In golem fights personal story, the boss golem is the “super-powerful, super-charged OVR-9000” Still LOLz
I posted about this 3 months ago and got no replies so I’ll post about it again, there are two NPCs at Caledon Forest named “Merchant Remi” and “Merchant Trundle” and they ask you to kill champion jungle troll.
For me this is kinda obvious but seeing no one responded to my previous post, I thought I’d open it up a bit.
Trundle is a champion in League of Legends who is an actual troll, and mostly used for jungling.
Remi reminds me of Remi Gaillard, the guy trolling people, search youtube for him if you are unfamiliar with his stuff.
Those two names and the fact that the target is Champion Jungle Troll…
I think I just got trolled =)
There are also quite a few things in the quotes at the bottom of item/weapon descriptions.
One that can recall off the top of my head is an accessory sold by Mad Mardine in Diessa Plateau after the Cattlepult testing. He sells an accessory called a Cowbell and the quote at the bottom says “Everyone says we need more of these. I think we’ve got enough”. That is a reference to the SNL act with Will Farrel and Christopher Walken when they are playing “Don’t fear the reaper” by Blue oyster cult.
When you ask Mr. Sparkles a question he cannot answer, he says “Insufficient data at this time”. Clearly a reference to Data from Star Trek.
I thought that it was an Asimov reference.
There’s a Dynamic Event in Metrica Province involving a pair of Asura NPCs. The brash, foolhardy leader is named Xapp and his reluctant sidekick is named Kippf.
“Sir, the buyers are getting restless about their orders. What should I tell them?”
“Tell them the prototypes have entered Alpha Testing. No! Wait! Tell them we’ll send out the product ‘when it’s ready!’”
Also, Researcher Irkz in south eastern Plains of Ashford says, “It’s a process. True success is one percent iteration, ninety-nine percent iteration.”
…When we were all clamoring for more info before they even announced betas, ANet kept talking about the many iterations they were going thru.
Darkhaven
…beware the unicorns.
Did anyone notice that the colorful versions of the “Hawkeye Griffons” near the Ascalon Settlement are colored similarly to the hero Hawkeye from the old Avengers comics?
Also, one of my favorite gravestones:
“Fahrun Pohster
1218-1236 AE
Got everything for free, never satisfied with what he got
We hope he’ll be happy with this plot.”
Fairly obvious reference to “Forum Posters” who can get everything they ask for and still complain about it. Also, the plot is probably the game plot as well.
Plus, note the date of birth and death. Fahrun Pohster is 18 or under, so it’s a jab at this particular form of poster being immature as well.
Goal: To have one character of every race, gender, and armor class combination at level 80.
Current progress: Human 4/6 | Charr 1/6 | Norn 1/6 | Sylvari 1/6 | Asura 1/6 | Total: 8/30
(edited by MikeRocks.9243)
Oh, almost forgot. One of the tombstones is also a reference to the show Supernatural.
“Jahn Winchest
1250-1302 AD
Died protecting his two sons
Saving people was his family’s business”
Reference to Sam and Dean Winchester’s dad, John Winchester, who taught them to be Hunters like him.

This immediately brought a Song of Ice and Fire to my mind.

Love all the firefly references, Skritts say “everything shiny” if they had said capn i would have lost it. Also found a rifle with the name “Vera” this was jayne cobbs favorite gun
You probably noticed that dredge seem to have Russian names.
What is more, Sorrow’s Embrace is a dungeon about Moletariat and revolution of the working class, a reference to Proletarian revolution.

As a russian guy i must add some dredge references since, in developers minds ,we are moles here^^my faourite is Dostoev Sky Peak, which is obvious reference to my favourite writer.
The whole Harathi Hinterlands zone is a reference to WoW which has two areas, Arathi Basin and Hinterlands next to each other.
Just pointing out one that appears to be an obvious reference at the moment:
The Bee Dog is most definitely a reference to Homer’s Dogs that shoot bees out of their mouth :-)
Anet are renowned for the their lil easter eggs, GW1 was full of em. They’re a community of wonderful geeks xD
One I noticed the other day in Harathi Highlands while doing a DE at Nightguard Beach with a guy who was on patrol that was a clear reference to Jurassic Park.
At the end of the DE he talks about a spider cave, he goes through saying it’s strange there are no spiders. At the end of the tunnel he turns and realizes it’s a trap as a vet spider comes down and mutters……..“clever girl”.
Loved it.
Apple Jack sells apples at a stand in Cornucopian Fields (a strong alcoholic beverage produced from apples, a character from my little pony) and his pet dog duke (Marmaduke a newspaper comic strip drawn by Brad Anderson and a 2010 live action film adaptation of Brad Anderson’s comic strip)
Hey all,
I saw this thread when it started and keep popping back in to it now and then for a skim and a laugh! Keep up the good work all.
I have seen a few ‘Easter eggs’ in game but forget to write them down to post here.
One I saw yesterday that I have seen before; in Merchantman’s Straits an NPC (vet crafty corsair I think) says ‘I love it when a plan comes together’ or very similar and this is, of course, a nod to the A-Team.
I was thinking about the character Trahearne last night and can, at a very long stretch, link it to a number things! (Though non are likely the source).
The prefix ‘Tra’ can mean ‘beyond’ and, in the UK at least, we have Herne the Hunter as a spirit of nature – with a slew of possible historical origins but first mentioned in literature by Shakespeare (Merry wives of Windsor). Are we finding here a much removed (‘Beyond’) relative of Herne the Hunter? (Probably not).
Again in the UK we have Margaret Traherne (Hazel Wilkes) a renowned artist – maybe someone in the ANet team was influenced by her work. (This is a stretch but a could be).
Staying in the UK and really making a stretch; Thomas Traherne (venerated saint – Anglican Church) was a clergyman, poet and theologian with a love of nature that was reflected in his works. Another possible influence on a team ANet member? (Unlikely).
Across the ‘pond’ in the US, there is a Traherne Manor that I have heard of but know little of (google would tell me more I suppose). Some link here to ANet or a team member? (Not impossible I think).
Yes! I was BORED when thinking of these things last night before bed. I did not, until writing this (and only for quick reference), but the reader could use a search engine to find out more!

recently i’ve been completing the fire elemental boss chain in metrica province and drew a pretty obvious comparison(don’t know how it escaped me first of all)
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rooba
vs
the roomba 500 series(not sure if we can link to third party consumer sites)
anyway, rooba is the asuran in charge of cleaning up the mess in the thaumanova reactor and her cleaning golem is the 5000. not only that, but he walks in a circle in 2 pre events and a warning to all roomba owners: empty out that vacuum lest you want a spill in your home
