easter eggs and references?
In a story mission on Orr, a Charr NPC says “the spider is a spy.” Possibly a reference to Team Fortress 2.
Could also be a reference to “Game of Thrones”.
A PvX guild for mature players with a life.
Yeah, every time I hear my ranger say “I choose you”, I want to hit a dev.
Yeah, every time I hear my ranger say “I choose you”, I want to hit a dev.
That is possibly the single most annoying thing that any player character says. ’Nough said!
There’s a skritt named Chikt’ikkat in Maelstrom.
Chiktikka Fastpaws was a raccoon companion of one character in Baldur’s Gate and was referred in Mass Effect too as Chatika vas Paus
There’s a Tank Girl reference in the Norn quest Road Block. “If those dredge hurt our chugger, I’m gonna hit them so hard their children will be born bruised!”
Also I don’t remember seeing it but hopefully someone has mentioned the Triforge Pendant, and the 3 it’s made from. Big Legend of Zelda reference there.

Sadly no miniature giant space hamsters yet.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Overheard in, I think, Frostgorge: a dredge leader announces to the others “We may wobble but we will never fall down. We’re like Weebles!”
(Weebles are an egg-shaped roly-poly toy with the slogan “Weebles always wobble but they don’t fall down”)
Well I didn’t look through all the posts but the entire grawl fractal seems inspired by Indiana Jones and the temple of doom (pretty obvious to people who watched the movie). The worshiping grawls, the rail carts, the lava.. I love it when they reference Indiana Jones because it’s one of my favorite movie series so running away from giant rock balls that can crush you is fun in my book
50/50 GWAMM x3

NECROD
An easter egg in Hoelbrak (I believe the Home Instance). There is a statue of Eir’s Father, Einar Cliffstrider. There is a quote “Who dares, wins”. That is a motto of the SAS, a military unit in the UK.
Smough The Cruel [WvW] – Warrior
(edited by Riselight.3695)
Surprised nobody hasn’t put this one in here yet:
The achievement for jumping into the lava in Southsun is called “The Goggles Do Nothing”.
Kyxha 80 Ranger, Sokar 80 Necro
Niobe 80 Guardian, Symbaoe 45 Ele
I want to contribute! Here are somethings I notices and want to point out.
Ebonhawke – I think there was a skill in GW1 with the same name, which can also be a reference to Ebon Hawk, the ship from Knights of the Old Republic.
North Nolan hatchery in Diessa Plateau – Reference to voice actor Nolan North (who voices the human males).
There’s a section in the uncategorized fractal where lines of electricity rolls down a ramp. This always reminds me of rock band except instead of hitting every note, you’re supposed to dodge them.
When you activate the warrior elite skill rampage you gain a red aura – Dragonball Z Kaioken? This might be a stretch, but when you’re in this form you stop using your weapons and your attack include punching, kicking, throwing a boulder (energy ball) and launching your enemy. Too bad no teleporting behind your enemy though.
The asura gates that reaches the other major cities in Lion’s Arch looks like a hand from the map. Divinity’s Reach being the thumb.
The different dances for each race probably references something too.

Hard to believe this one hasn’t been mentioned here.
My wife and I were running a story mission that required us to infiltrate a group of pirates. After the initial fighting phase the pirates still wouldn’t accept us without proving our worth as pirates. To prove such we had to engage in a battle of insults with one of the pirates.
I about laughed myself silly at this reference to the Monkey Island series of games.
Idk if it’s easter egg, but I saw a citizen in LA walking in crocs, lol
Well I will add this one since I haven’t seen it yet.
When you meet General Almora (Vigil) for the 1st time she says something similar to this line here:
Jean Rasczak: “I need a corporal. You’re it, until you’re dead or I find someone better.”
General Almora basically says “I’m the leader of the Vigil until I’m dead or they find someone better.”
That line is from StarshipTroopers. Nice job ANet!
I am surprised there were only 1 WoW Easteregg reference.
Yesterday I was running with my friends to get some achievements and I stumbled about this which looks like a Borderlands reference to me. The chest does at least, but let me know what you guys think.
in CoF p1 when you have to rescue the engineer, she says: shut up and kill me already, which I’m not sure where it exactly comes from since it is used a lot, but probably a reference to Psychonauts or something else, don’t know exactly :P. The exactly came from some other show/game. But here Lily says shut up and kiss me.
psychonauts
Guild Wars 2

Dunno if it was already mentioned, but the zone in Blazeridge Steppes called "Steeleye Span" is a reference to a british folk-rock band by the same name.
No mention yet of Guard Muldoon being an obvious reference to Robert Muldoon from Jurassic Park, “Clever girl” line and all? Man, I feel old now.
Also, check out Hardcore Adventure Box: World 1, World 2, Lost Sessions
Main Character: Dathius Eventide | Say “hi” to the Tribulation Clouds for me. :)
The “Angry Bird” easter egg in Ebonhawk. Harm the chicken in the farm enough and they will start becoming “Angry birds”

The fact that anyone could make this mistake saddens me. What has become of the current generation?

Came across one in Mount Maelstrom, the song was stuck in my head for the rest of the night. There is an event where you sabotage some inquest holding cells, you replace an equation on one of the consoles with “I’m the best around”. The message box says, “While your intrusion will likely be detected, you feel good about letting them know you’re the best around.”
Not sure if this was mentioned before, but the hidden jumping puzzle at the end of AC is a reference to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It has the invisible bridges that are revealed with sand, just like one of the trials from the movie.
Not sure if mentioned but Drake slayer achievement has a reference to snakes on the plane.
“Enough of these massive drakes on Tyria’s massive fields”.
The different dances for each race probably references something too.
(The Asura dance is specifically mixed popping and the robot, which is for obvious reasons – the Haka, the dance the charrs do, is a traditional war dance)
There are a few other things, too:
There’s an NPC who says “It’s a trap!”
The Trionic Lattice in Frostgorge is a reference to Doctor Who
Evon Gnashblade said “I love the smell of commerce in the morning!”
There are a looot. Those are just some. (I’m so glad I’m not the only one who got the Steeleye Span reference though.)
There are lots and lots of gravestone references, too. A good portion are references to books and other media, and many others are references to characters from GW1.
I’m not sure if this was an intentional reference, but even though not completely identical, the Twisted Nightmares remind me of General Grievous.
The Dredge who you have to kill in (I believe) the Priory storyline is named Vyacheslav, which was the first name of Vyacheslav Molotav. From which we get Molotov kittentails, obviously. Also the moley puns
Eternal Clarity [Ankh] /Archivists Sanctum [Lore]
A quaint dye collector with a lore problem.
No one found the Monty Python reference in Harathi Hinterlands yet?
At Restricted Zone XRB, if you fail the event in that area (collecting sparks and then defending the assistant), the assistant will walk about singing about how she has a lovely bunch of data collectors, fiddle dee dee…
The Tyrian Institute (TI)
One of the few Americans on Gunnar’s Hold (EU)
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but in Wayfarer Foothills, there’s a bridge troll hiding under a bridge by himself lol.
~Surrender fiend and you will get an easy death
~I could promise you the same…but it would be a lie…
In Caledon Forest, near Wychmire Waypoint;
There’s a Lionguard named Trundle who complains about having his supplies nabbed by a bunch of trolls (Event).
I theorise this as a LoL reference, based on “Trundle the troll”

A guard saying “It’s a trap” can also be referencing the fact that… there’s a trap.

Well if his name were, say “Ackbar” or something similar I could see it being an easter egg :P

There is a merchant in LA at the Lion Fountain Plaza named Robert Trinitie. I know the guy this merchant was named after. (Probably not truly an Easter Egg, but my own GW2 claim to “fame” none the less!)
in SAB’s world 1 zones 1 and 2 if you kill all the bunnies a Bun-nado appears so sharknado reference?
The bun-nado was already there last year, and shark-nado is a recent film. So no, not really. Just a case of something silly being made into an actual movie.
However, that gong sequence in world 2 zone 2, that’s definitely a Temple of Doom reference.

The Asura at the gate in Hoelbrak uses some of the technobabble from this classic video.
Noticed it last night for the first time.
RIP City of Heroes
My norn’s personal story is pretty much Dude, Where’s my car?
She got drunk and blacked out…turns out she and this Charr Warband had a wild party and they lost their chugger.. >.>
Best storyline ever. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Unexpected_Visitors
No one mention the captain planet reference? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kG28emLGLk
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but over in Metrica Province (Luminates Plant I believe) there’s a event there where you have to stop the Inquest before they steal all the golems. If you fail the event, you can see 2 Asura (Xapp and Kippf) talking that is clearly a reference to Futurama.
There are so many, from Jumping puzzle references (remember only Zuhl? which refers to the ghostbusters line?) to numerous golem names.
But a couple if my favorites I’ve spotted that I don’t see in this thread:
In one of the AC paths, an NPC refers to a piece of equipment as a Resonance Cascader
And in Harathi Hinterlands there’s a renown heart NPC named Corporal Lebeau, a referance to a hilarious old tv show character
Main: Asuran Engineer — Alt 80’s Ra-T-M-G-El-N-W-En-En-Re-Ra
Doctorate in Applied Jumping
This golem in Snowden drifts is channeling TF2’s soldier in the robot outfit!
I don’t see the reference
Mmmm thread necromancy.
There is a MacGyver and probably Star Trek reference in the personal story step Retribution.
Pretty sure it was mentioned earlier, but in the H. Hinterlands theres the Jurassic Park reference with muldoon (can’t remember npcs exact name, but its close to the movies character name) and clever girl.
Please give us a keyring…
I recall a cat peeking from a ceiling in one of the base game betas but can’t seem to reach the area anymore
Mai Trin uses a “Bonetti’s Rapier”, wich is a reference to old GW1 “Bonetti” boss and “Bonetti’s Defense” skills, which were also references to the sword duel scene in “The Princess Bride”, where IƱigo congratulates Westley’s use of the Bonetti’s defense.
(I found this while searching for a better skin for my thief’s sword: IMO Bonetti’s Rapier skin is way better than Faren’s)
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

Forgive me if someone else has posted it and I missed it…
The Chronomancer’s skills Echo of Memory and Tides of Time are a nod to the time traveling Ecco the Dolphin and his sequel game, The Tides of Time.
I love you, Arenanet.
So I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but in the Plains of Ashford there’s an event to lead 3 kids around all the ghosts. At the end 2 of them said ‘you got yak butter on my moa jerky’ the other said ‘you got moa jerky in my yak butter’. I think this is a reference to a skit on Family Guy where officer Reece’s finds a car wreck and they make Reece’s Pieces
I’m not sure if this one was mentioned already but, when a necro summons minions sometimes he says “Give my creation… Life” an easter egg from Frankenstein Junior
Found one in Divinity’s reach.
Apparently there’s drakes in the sewers.
This is a reference to the classic urban legend Alligators in the Sewers.
South in metrica there is 2 asuran children making" yo mama" jokes.
