easter eggs and references?
I’m not sure this is one but I heard a(n) NPC say “Move along, move along!” I instantly thought of Stormtroopers in Star Wars Episode IV when Luke and Ben go to Mos Eisley.
(edited by Paul.4081)
paul, that is definitely one. if he had said ‘nothing to see here,’ that could have been a line from south park or the simpsons haha. it makes me wonder at the general age group of the anet staff in comparison to the player base(in terms of getting references and jokes)
One of the final bosses in Sorrows Embrace makes a Terminator reference while he sinks into the lava.
I type in Anet employees names into Dogpile when they reply to us mere mortals. They seem to be all ages. As long as they are up for Star Wars/Indiana Jones etc. etc. references they are ok by me
If they use some horror film references I might just send them Christmas card! Although I’m sure there must be some Evil Dead/Bruce Campbell ones in there somewhere.

Thief skill “Scorpion Wire” is a reference to “Mortal Kombat”.
There is a place where if you attack a chicken, you will get attacked by a BUNCH, just like in "Legend Of Zelda ".
There is, of course, the line “Shatter an adventurers dreams with a single arrow to the knee” (or something like that) that is obviously a “Skyrim” reference.
There’s the line “urge to kill rising!!” which is from a Halloween episode of “The Simpsons”
There’s the line “You’re going to need a bigger bow” which is a take on the line in “Jaws”
EDIT: Remembered another one!!. The boat from “The Goonies” is at the end of a jumping puzzle!!

Has no one looked closely at the icon for the mesmer “portal” skill?

Nobody mentioned the Galaxy Quest reference in the middle of lions arch yet? By Ogden’s hammer, What savings!

Also in plains of Ashford, there’s a ruin with a sword, a frog, and a cat named Alfa. That I strongly think is a stealth Chrono Trigger reference.

The Engineer stole several of Data’s gadgets as well. Such as the Personal Battering Ram and the Slick Shoes.
I did an event where I had to escort some kids to a hidden treasure and on the way they meet and befriend an etten, I dont recall the names but it made me think of the goonies with the etten taking the role of Sloth.
——
There was an event, or maybe it was a renown mission where you help ogers tame new pets.
Some times they would reply with a line similar to “hug him and squeeze him and name him George.” Which some of you may recognize as a line from a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Hugo the Abominable Snowman wants to keep Bugs as a pet and name him George.

The mobs that Tequatl spawns, Creepers that explode on death….minecraft
Could be wrong here but im currently watching this doc on netflix about an adventurer that got lost in the amazon named percy fawcett while searching for a lost city he called z or whatever. it could be the idea behind the 2 fawcett puzzles. funny really as im doing the puzzle now im like wait this guys name is fawcett hmmm. anyway could be wrong but he was an adventurer. but the fawcett in the puzzle seems to be more of a pirate or something.
There is a kid in Fireheart Rise that talks about trying to get 5 grawl necklaces for his friend and something about his friend’s family used to do things like this for generations.
Nick the traveler of GW 1 fame much?
There’s a large captain planet reference (complete with a bunch of asura mocking the one who stands for heart) at the start of the metrica.
There is the OVR-9000 bot and one of the jumping puzzles has an Indiana Jones Easter egg.
“Only in death does duty end.”
The little Asura kid in Lion’s Arch who says “I like turtles.”

Actually, (i could be wrong, though. Don’t remember for sure) I THINK the fawcett puzzles are the ones with the “Goonies” boat at the end. Which leads me to believe it’s more along the lines of “Chester Cobblepot”, the adventurer who died searching for “One Eyed Willies” boat.
Isn’t “Shines” from EQ???…don’t remember lol

OH SNAP!!, you’re RIGHT!!…sorry, I must have gotten him confused with “The Penguin” LOL
A region in Mount Maelstrom is called “Cubular Fells”
This is a reference to “Tubular Bells” by Mike Oldfield ( main theme from The Exorcist )
this might be a stretch, but if you play a human, during the personal story, your sister’s name is deb. made me think of dexter immediately.
In the Black Citadel, the command center looks a lot like the death star from star wars
Order of Whispers story quest “An Apple a Day” has what I believe is a Breaking Bad reference, courtesy of Tybalt.
Ministry Commander Landon: Lady Beetlestone, if you think a few apple barrels will stop me, you’re going to be disappointed.
Lightbringer Tybalt Leftpaw: Landon, you’ve got two disappointments coming. First, Demmi’s not going back with you. Second…
Lightbringer Tybalt Leftpaw: These aren’t apple barrels!
Compare this to season 1, episode 6 of Breaking Bad, where Walter confronts Tuco:

“For great justice!” Is a shout out to Anonymous, perhaps as an acknowledgement that they endorsed the game.
The “Angry Bird” easter egg in Ebonhawk. Harm the chicken in the farm enough and they will start becoming “Angry birds”

This shout is actually a reference to the infamously poorly-translated meme of a game Zero Wing.

EDIT: It was also a skill in the original Guild Wars and has been around since release.

I went back and edited that into my post. :-P
Speaking of GW1 skills with references that have persisted into GW2:
“Rodgort’s Invocation” and “Mark of Rodgort” elementalist skills from GW1 → “Rodgort” came back as a legendary torch in GW2 and is “Trogdor” spelled backwards. Trogdor the Burninator is of course from Homestar Runner.

I don’t remember exactly where it is but in one of the slyvari areas there was an NPC that says he’s “a leaf on the wind”.
EDIT: for those who don’t know or remember it’s from Firefly

The “Angry Bird” easter egg in Ebonhawk. Harm the chicken in the farm enough and they will start becoming “Angry birds”
I thought of Zelda when I ran into this one. I accidentally hit one and then my minion finished it off. Suddenly there were like 10 angry chickens attacking me to death. If you attack a chicken in Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time they get revenge.
I’ve also found a lot of references to the Arenanet team.
A kid in Queensdale was talking about Destiny Edge and the book written by “Joffan Grubbe”.
There’s also Foreman Flannum.
And there’s also a norn called Kolijn Johansson, walking in Hoelbrak. He says that he’s very busy and he talks about his job.
Probably more, but that’s all I remember. Those details are pretty awesome when you know Arenanet devs
these references add a whole new layer to the game. i know it’s a common thing now to do it, but i still find it hilarious every time i find an egg in any game i play.
i guess in a way it’s sort of like ‘breaking the 4th wall’ to borrow a term
Sorry, but I don’t remember exactly where this is, but there’s a pirate guy that you follow around in an event. The event has a few steps, then he runs off to his home point after. I followed him one time to see where he was going.
When he gets to his home spot in a busted up ship/town/townmadeofships he starts belting out “I am the very model of a modern pirate general…” (pirates of penzance) or something along those lines. He actually goes through an entire round of this song modified for the game and NPC. It was one of the most hilarious surprises I happened across and loved sitting there laughing my kitten off at the lyrics they came up.
Great stuff….I wish I could remember exactly where that was..
EDIT: looked it up..wasn’t hard to find…imagine that…his name is Captain Penzan. You Anet guys are great.

That’s probably more to do with Justin Fawcett, employee of ArenaNet. I bet the trap that gets you the “Fawcett’s Revenge” was his idea.
So I was playing my new Sylvari Engineer, and I had a story quest to set up flora turrets to help defend a point from waves of incoming undead. Which is pretty much Plants vs Zombies.
there’s an asura in “somewhere” (i don’t remember where) who says the “1.21 gigowatt” quote from back to the future =)
It may be a co-incidence, or a reference to something completely different but…
Frequently when you kill Risen they say “ kitten your eyes”. That’s the title to an Etta James song.
On edit: One word got kittened out. But if you see the video you’ll recognize the line.

One of the thief’s utility skills is named Roll for Initiative, a DnD reference.
I really enjoy the more subtle references. They don’t beat you in the head with them like some other games I might mention… The Terminator 2 reference in Sorrow’s Embrace is my favorite so far.
Asura, College of Dynamics storyline, at one point you have to fend off an inquest assault culminating in a fight with a huge golem named STAB-0 (actually, a lot of golem names are references to something or other).
This one’s a Robocop sendoff, with the golem listing his four prime directives during the fight. eg, “Directive One: Uphold the Goals of the Inquest”
Also, unrelated to that one, there’s a waypoint in Dredgehaunt called “Nottowr Fault”

There is a Charr NPC in Blazeridge Steppes named “Brinstar Keenmind”, a reference to Regina Buenaobra. I also found a cute Asuran kid named “Rubi Bayer” in Metrica Province.
I imagine Martin Kerstein, Gaile Gray and others are similarly nestled into the game, I just haven’t found ’em yet.

Caladbolg is described by Trahearne like the master sword, saying it requires Power, Wisdom and Courage in equal amounts to wield the blade to banish evil.
So I was playing my new Sylvari Engineer, and I had a story quest to set up flora turrets to help defend a point from waves of incoming undead. Which is pretty much Plants vs Zombies.
