Go to your Hero panel. On the first tab, there are a number of selections. Pick “wardrobe.”

From there, you select the piece of armor/weapon and on your left are all of your appearance options. Find the one you like and click “apply changes” on the left. Assuming you have sufficient transmutation charges (they aren’t hard to get), you are now done.

Thankfully, ANet has stuck with their plan to make it so you never have to choose between appearance and functionality.

Almost never! I think the Spinal Blade backpacks can’t be upgraded if you change their looks. At least their tooltip warns of that.

I did forget the exception that if you transmute something, it can’t be used as a component in crafting or mystic forge recipes (can still be tossed in to get random items). Thank you for reminding me.

Wait, what? No, you can use transmuted items in the MF, it will treat that item as the base item – there’s even a little tooltip that says as much when you mouse over it while in the MF window.

I was able to infuse six spinal blade backpacks even after they were transmuted (long story short: picked the wrong stats, transmuted the items, realized half a year later where I messed up), so I know for sure you can upgrade backpacks at the very least.

Search “dulfy” and “spinal blades” for a nice guide.

Ok, first off, there are no longer transmutation stones. Transmutation doesn’t work the way it used to. You can’t just randomly transmute things with other things. Now you have to be able to equip the thing, and while equipped you can apply the appearance of any other item you have unlocked, as long as you have enough transmutation charges available.

So, if you have an ascended items you can give it the appearance of anything, it doesn’t change in any way but appearance. In the case of the Spinal Blade back item, which became available during the Siege of Lion’s Arch event, it should still count as a Spinal Blade even after that. Before stones became charges transmutation would end this property, but now it doesn’t.

Spinal Blades are “craftable” ascended back pieces. They’re crafted via the mystic forge and effectively have to be leveled up. Each time you put them through the forge they become more elaborate and higher rank. It’s up to you if you like the appearance, though. Their stats are also selectable at each stage of development.

If you weren’t around for the event, though, it will be exceptionally difficult to acquire since the current sources for blade shards are extremely limited.

Yep. See below. I did this intentionally as this was the last version of the backpiece I wanted. Since I changed the skin, it says “Transmuted,” as well as “Cannot be used in the Mystic Forge if transmuted.” I lack the ingredients to confirm this, but the tool tip is pretty specific.

Oh right, that’s one of my posts that wouldn’t go through on that day when the forums were all “this area is not yet available.” I took a similar screenshot and posited that maaaaybe the tool tip is saying you can’t forge higher Blades if all you’ve done is transmute a Blades skin onto some other statted backpack? Except if so, that’s rather duh.

I’ve never dared change the appearance on the Blades to check.

For appearance. Each tier of the spinal backpack (from Fine to Ascended) is a level 80 gear with stats that are as strong as of any other level 80 backpack of the same tier. Of course, final forms are of Ascended tier, so offer the best stats for the backpack slots, but they are not the only ascended backpacks around. If you don’t care about appearance, there are other possibilities, cheaper/easier to acquire.

Actions, not words.

That tooltip is definitely wrong, like I said: I’ve tossed transmuted spinal blade backpieces into the MF to upgrade them without any problems. Transmuting an item doesn’t change the base item ID, there is no reason why the MF would be checking anything other than the base item ID against possible recipes, and you can also see for yourself that the MF will recognize what your transmuted gear actually is.

I’m not even sure why that tooltip about transmutation not working with the MF even exists, because at no point was I ever not able to use transmuted spinal blades of any quality in the MF.

The issue with the spinal blade backpack was from before transmutation charges. With the old system you actually lost the ‘item’ you transmuted with (i.e. putting spinal blade skin on another item meant you lost the spinal blade ‘item’). The upgrading is based on the item, not the skin. In other words, that issue is gone with the new system because you no longer lose an item if you want to use that skin on another item.

Jip. In the old system you couldn’t. Since they implemented the wardrobe in feature pack 2 it uses the base item.

Old system you couldn’t, feature pack 2 came out after S1 ended (and thus the spinal backpieces became available in game). So the tooltip is probably a bug.

I stand corrected, that tooltip message is just leftovers from the old system that shouldn’t exist anymore.
