forced to change name before playing
If a name is officially used as part of game lore, they most likely don’t want others pretending to be them. You can look like them, presumably, but not be them since you are not them.
Most MMOs are like this when it comes to their lore and content.

but I’ve been playing with that name for months now, being forced to change it all of the sudden feels so… bad
I think I fixed it I’m not telling what I did or Anet will nerf that too :p

Somehow it does not seem a good idea to post this on the forums of arenanet’s own game. Anyway, if you are confused to how you are allowed to name the character, you might contact support (see SUPPORT at the top left of this page).

Someone reported the name or they updated the filters. Don’t know any games that allow NPC names to be used by players. You also agreed to that when you first started the game.

Yeah, I still can’t name my pet wolf Indiana in WoW. :\

As reported by GM Talon in the Account Issues Support sub-forum:
The primary reason behind this is to eliminate the potential for impersonation of these characters and/or an ArenaNet employee. Some of the more pronounced character names were already in our naming filter for this reason (such as Ogden, Kormir, Vizier Khilbron, etc.), but other character names that we thought were in the filter actually were not. This action was set in motion to create that consistency across all prominent NPCs from both Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.
A few rotten apples are using these names to pass themselves off to the gullible as ArenaNet employees for their own nefarious ends. Isn’t that always the way of things? A few unscrupulous idiots ruining the fun for everyone.

And I can’t name any of my pets here “Party”…why?
But yes, they updated the name filters and if you just changed the letters to be something else but the same name, you’ll likely be reported by someone and you’ll have to change your name again. Best to find an original name.
