gear treadmill
You should probably try playing GW1, it will give you the perspective you need to comment on GW2’s design decisions.
If you had read the forum you’d had about over a thousand suggestion as to what can replace grind.

gear treadmill are horroble. Your Char gets worse everytime you log in after a new update. Its not progression at all sice it means to move forward. Gear treadmills are making you move backwards! Its worse and is a huge fun killer.
You can’t compare life to grinding in MMOs. In MMOs grinding gear give you a huge advantage over players that spend less time than you playing, but it doesn’t require skill at all, you are better just because your stats are higher, not because you are a better player. This is not like life, cause you can spend as much time as you want “living” as long as you don’t improve yourself you won’t get better at anything. Unless you already have a bunch of money, but that’s another different story.
Occam Pi (Ele), Acaena Elongata (Warrior), Finja Salversdotir (Ranger),
Bytestream (Engineer), Vim Whitespace (Thief)

if you want replace the grind without doing something candylandish, easy, weak, unchallenging to get top gear, what would you replace the grind with?
How about replacing the grind without doing something candylandish, easy, weak, unchallenging to get whatever the heck you want that doesn’t gate your content. See GW1.
This is a game and I derive no income from it. That is work.
I play this game for fun and relaxation not to work. If Anet wants to pay me to play I will be happy to do so and grind away. If they can beat my current salary.
I take it then because I make a lot of Money you wouldnt have an issue with Anet allowing me to buy the gear in the game. I have more money than most and earned so I am entitled to spend it right.
it is like life. you work more, you get more. it isn’t entitled. it is earned.
By this logic a mentally disabled individual should eventually become president if they just work long enough weeks at Goodwill. Sorry, that’s not how life works. In life you get ahead by being smarter and more innovative than others, not by mindlessly devoting your time to monotonous tasks.
grinds? here @GW2? where?
people seem to forgot what a real grind actually is…
i start to describe something as a “grind” as soon as i have to be one spot killing the same lame mob over and over again for several days straight just for one lv-up/piece of gear/quest
that’s what keeps most F2P mmo’s alive actually:
spend a bunch of money into several drop/boosting items
can’t say it’s the case in GW2
about gear threadmill:
don’t you want new content frequently in any mmorpg?
first people criticize the lack of endgame content and now this…make up your mind, guys :D
“Only the finest of potatoes in my zerkburgers.”
on the forum, i am hearing gear treadmill. i take it as the gear grind. almost every mmo is a grind. the trend is a harder the grind, the greater the reward. it is challenge. it is like life. you work more, you get more. it isn’t entitled. it is earned.

There is nothing challenging about grinding gear, it doesn’t make the dungeons more challenging, any new dungeons will be balanced for the new level of gear, all it does is make the old dungeons even less challenging, though quite why anyone who wants challenging PvE is playing GW2 is a mystery in itself.
Same goes for WvW, it is more challenging facing an opponent with equal gear, outgearing someone makes for a dull, crappy encounter. As Anet well know as they have repeatedly mentioned the negative effects of gear differences in PvP, in interviews.
As for comparisions with life, moronic grind fests suit those who don’t work particularly hard (or at all) in life as they are teh ones with the free time. Which was one of the now laughable selling points of GW2, that people who were busy in life would be able to not play for a while and be able to return at no disadvantage, as they would not be left behind in gear progression as with many other games..
The MMORPG industry is utterly stagnant, full of games that lose most of their playerbase and never grow for a reason, GW2 has just became another WoW 2.0 clone, no wonder their game director is too embarassed to comment.

i reviewed the gw1 website and its game mechanics. my first impression – this game don’t need a gear grind. it needs a great, skill grind. bonus skills as endgame rewards. arenanet should have develop a real expansion from gw1. keep gw1 skills and add new skills, zones. keep gw1 pvp system and add new bgs, wz, WvW. I will play gw1 to find out if i am right. the problem is the most mmos dominate by gear grinding. they set the mindset of most players to keep good and bad players. this game has a lot of competition. i hope for your sake, it gets better and survives.

There is no progression in a gear treadmill.
You’re running yes but, you’re not moving forward. You’re just trying to keep up with the stat inflation. It’s a lazy way for developers to add challenging content.
I agree that life is like grinding in MMO’s, but its not like grinding for gear.
Challenging content should challenge the players skill; not their gear. Anet doesn’t seem to be doing very well at challenging player skill, so they are resorting to challenging the gear; pure laziness in my opinion.
Gear grinding is a lazy way to design plain and simple.
GW1 has such better ways to handle the option for the hardcore grinders and was a critical AND financial success for it.
Gear grinding does not equal success. Lazy copy cat design decisions definitly dont.
Stat increase = gear grind.
Gear grind = no money from me ever again.

Do you really think the people who complained about wanting new gear to grind for are the same people complaining about them adding it?

Quoted for so much truth. I don’t get how it’s possible that people still think life works like that.
