ghastly grinning shield skin
agree looks like someone is duping the shield and greatsaw greatsword skin, always someone dumping like 50 of them in 3 sec.
Might be because a lot of people could have had it and came back when hot came out but couldn’t put it up on the tp at 5000 because they couldn’t afford tp fee. But now they drop to 500 those people can afford the fee
I kind of hate to renew this thread….everyone has their opinion.
Its been a week, and maybe another 60 or 70 skins has come up for sale. This has happened several times in the last few months. The skins are at a all time low now.
At one time, I too believed it to be the returning player thing, but there have been just too many that has magically appeared for sale.
I can’t think of one thing that once sold for 5000gold and now you maybe as cheap as 400g, or even cheaper. Keeping in mind there is no source of new ones.
Please don’t think I’m trying drive up the price. I bought one at 600g about a month and a half ago, and felt lucky to get it at that price. I only wanted/needed one and will keep it.
I really wish ArenaNet would look at this just incase someone figured out how to hack this. Probably a long shot, but its just too weird not to take a look.
If someone had developed a hack they would want the price high so they would release 1 a week or so, not a bunch at once that drives the price down.
Could be banned accounts coming back online and dumping their goods before the next ban round hits.
Looks like it’s been a steady drop over the last 6 months. Someone already mentioned it but with the listing fees and the taxes a lot of people are likely able to afford these lower prices more than the original ones. That’s why we are seeing more movement and more stock (even though no new ones have been introduced).

Just got mine via buy-order for 300 gold. I’d suggest getting it while you can. Yeah, the prices may drop even more, but who the kitten really knows how much supply is there. It’s kinda impossible to predict the future of this skin since the supply is a big mistery.
and common sense.
Probably a dupe, there were people who had a stack of it, but a lot more than a stack gets introduced all the time.
If it would be horders the scythe skin would be price dropping, too
I’ve few friends who are sitting on multiple first halloween items. Talking closer to 100 skins if counted altogether. The log once in a while to check prices (dunno why they didn’t sell at 5k). Lets remind ourselves that it was fairly easy to get the skins when they came out and you could buy cheap ones for 10-20g back in the days.
There probably are still thousands of halloween skins sitting on banks. The first big wave of quitters left around after first halloween. At least all of my friends quit around that ime.

I say GW2 effeciency is a pretty good way to catch gold seller and duper. Notice alot of ppl with alot of gold have very little play hour
Hmm interesting. I’ll try to bring this to their attention.

The Greatsaw Greatsword is also going up in supply, although not as much. It’s currently 330 gold, down from a high of 1100 gold.
ANet may give it to you.
the price dropped by another good bit, its starting to be alarming considering the skins have not been introduced since Halloween 2014 and only a small amount back then.
The scythe skin is at 5k and unaffected, so I doubt the price drop from greatsaws and the shield is just from returning players. Scythe would be affected, too. There must be more to it.

To be far, the Scythe did see the addition of two melee staff classes while only one class got a shield and no one got a great sword.
I don’t doubt there were hundreds of DD’s and Rev’s chomping at the bit to scythe down enemies.
While there might be something fishy going on, the staff does have some real user demand behind it while hardly anyone ever used shields back when the thing was absurdly expensive. They still really don’t. People wanted the GGS because it was a prestige item you wore in LA to shout “look how filthy rich I am” and really nothing more. Once that starts to erode away, it will snowball hard.
I mean, hell, it’s plummeted in price yet I still don’t see many wearing it. If people genuinely wanted it for it’s appearance alone (to such an extent that the demand creates a 4 digit price tag) it should be everywhere now that it’s fallen from “more than even the legendary shield” to less than some BLC shields.
People wear it now because people buy it now since it suddenly is so cheap. Several people in my guild bought the shield recently for personal use (unlocked it). The people who bought it for prestige probably stopped using it (people like me), I am not going to wear a 300g skin.
In the last 24h over 300 shields were traded, around 80 greatsaws but only 1 scythe. So the low price greatly increased demand for shield and greatsaw, but the price drops like crazy anyway. It looks really fishy to me.
I would like John Smith or Chris Cleary to inspect it.

Except you have 0 way of knowing how many of those sales were people buying for the purposes of applying, and thus consuming, the skin or to simply relist it hoping for an easy flip profit.
Your entire theory revolves around 3 ideas to hold it up
1. There is some kind of dupe method that has only so far been seen used on the Greatsaw and GGS though not the Scythe for reasons.
2. There is a massive use demand for one of the least used weapon types that should be eating up a kosher supply spike but isn’t because supply is seemingly overtaking the consumption.
3. The person/s responsible seem to be able to dupe items yet chose to do so on two of the most high profile items in the game. Items that are known to have a hard limit on their availability. They also seem to be doing this to such a ludicrous extent that they are destroying the value of the item as a “high trade value commodity”. They seem to be unable to understand how they’re greed is destroying their potential gains yet leave the scythe seemingly untouched and in the 5k range.
When people discover a dupe usually one of two things happen. They either go ham and/or the dupe is released publicly and things get so out of hand that the server needs a rollback. Or, they are sneaky about it and its not revealed until much later when the wrong person finds out and it’s made public and thus fixed.
I’ve never seen someone go crazy on only a few items like they are trying to keep a low profile but end up targeting big ticket items and grind them into the dirt in the process.
The people who bought it for prestige probably stopped using it (people like me), I am not going to wear a 300g skin.
Do you also insist on gold plated toilets, spring water hand bottled from an alpine rivulet, and one-off custom built Ferraris?
I promise you that when I see someone wearing the Ghastly Grinning Shield, my first assumption is they were lucky and got it as an RNG drop in the first Halloween, or someone nicely gave it to them (probably also someone who got it as RNG), not that they have immense wealth. I certainly don’t feel impressed or ascribe one iota of “prestige” to them. Not that I do for almost any skin, other than the ones I know required fiendish amounts of skill and effort to acquire.
What impresses me are people who put together a really excellent character and gear design, nicely dyed, preferably with a really lore appropriate creative but plausible name. If the gear is practically starter level in looks but fits the concept, even better.
Whatever’s behind this surge of grinning skins, I’m glad some people who need them for the piece de resistance in their design are now able to get them. Some. 300 gold for a skin is still sky high for a lot of people, myself included.
I’m buying gems in 2 days to finally get this skin.
….. And Elementalist.

I dont know why scythe is not affected, but it is still worth investigating this price drop. The current price drop is unprecedented by any other item in the game, especially for an item that has not been reintroduced into the game in any meaninful amount since Halloween 2012 (the raffle from 2014 was a small amount compared to what is getting traded currently)

It’s been well over 1000 shields dumped since December. Probably over 2000 by now. Source: me watching it pretty closely since then. A royal kitten ton were dumped during Easter weekend; a couple of 100.
You’ll notice on the TP graphs that when the less common greatsaw dumps occur, they occur within an hour or so of a shield dump. I’m pretty sure for the most part it’s just a couple of serious hoarders. I’m starting to become convinced it’s just one person.
I suspected something fishy for a while but you’d think if it was multiple people that they’d be competing to dump their stock and it’d be a much more rapid decline as they force each other to sell to lower and lower bids. I don’t really see that happening though, the mass dumps (not the original crash around Hween 2015 – these were not mass dumps) have been controlled and going for over 4 months now. How could you do this while you’re competing with other people to dump stock? That’s what doesn’t make sense to me and makes me think it’s more likely to be, for the most part (i.e discounting a few different dumps like the easter one), one super hoarder.

More like 1000 shields per week. The price went down by like 1/3 this week alone
I’ve brought this to their attention. Hopefully they can figure it out if it is a problem.

I too sent in a bug report. There is just way too many that keeps showing up for sale. No doubt some of the others explanations have contributed, but duping is the only thing that can explain the numbers for a thing that has not dropped in 2 years.
Well, gold sellers have been getting around gold transfer limits by buying arcane dust on the TP. They need an item that does not trade often (typically by there being no more of them) and has a high price (typically by there being no more of them).
Not sure what you are trying to say. But for something that at one time that was selling for 5000 gold and maybe 4 or 5 for sale……there sure has been a lot of activity.
Eh honestly I think it’s just going to end up being a hoarder thing.
I think some people are going about understanding this all backwards. They start with “there was only a couple on the TP for 5000g” instead of asking how it got to that point in the first place – the shields were hoarded to the extreme. Strictly speaking, discontinued items in games are easy money – there is no supply coming in, there is almost always demand by regular players but moreso, by investors.
While they did introduce 100 more shields in H’ween 2014, that is just a drop in the pond really and were all most likely (based on the sheer number being dumped now) bought up by investors again (as an aside, what is with people on reddit/the forums saying that most of these 100 were bound to accounts, how could you possibly know that lol) with there also being people buying it for the skin.
People underestimate how many items/how much gold people have in this game.
https://gw2efficiency.com/account/statistics
Check out the top 15 for things such as Account Value, Bank Value, Gold, Liquid Gold & Character Value. This is just people who use Gw2efficiency too mind you. There are 3 people with over 50,000 gold, 2 with over 100,000. There are 13 people with over 50,000 gold in bank value. The top guy has 189k gold worth in his bank, and this was 209k the other day yet his hours haven’t changed, so it’s losing worth for whatever reason. The top 15 for character value (includes bound items etc – but still) are all above 80k gold! This will undoubtedly include people using characters as storage for hoarding purposes. Theoretically, this guy with 189k bank worth – his hours haven’t gone up in a week or so, so he’s obviously unlikely to be the guy dumping shield – but assume for a moment all his worth is in shields. I believe worth is based on the return for selling at lowest listing, so say roughly 0.85*400 = 360g, 189k divided this, the guy could potentially have 525 shield skins sitting in his bank. He still could, we don’t really know.
The point is to not underestimate hoarding. The wealth is certainly there for it to be possible – we have information on a tiny minuscule subset of 15 people from gw2efficiency. Between their wealth alone they could have literally 1000s of shield skins. 15 people.
Something else worth noting is that when these first started being dumped on a large scale, someone was also buying out shield listings on the TP, I’m talking back when it was 1500 – 2000g in December/Jan, someone bought 27 of them at once when I first started getting interested in the market. This person/others continued to buy them as they were being dumped, buying several 100 before the buyouts stopped. They could be taking a huge loss and dumping/cutting their losses, or they might be trying to play a long game.
Now all this is not to say what is happening is unsurprising. I am very surprised that not only are the dumps still going, but how low they have been dumped at. They’ve been dumped as low as 205g, I’ve picked up a couple at 220g at the lowest (and sold/flipped already). Either some folks are losing out BIG time by dumping these (i.e the ones who bought high originally before the crash, or the people stocking up during the dumps) or imo the more likely scenario, people have hoarded them since their introduction where they were going for 15 – 30g for several weeks and are cashing in big time. I say this is more likely because dumping for as low as 205g sounds ridiculous to me, unless you bought them for much cheaper originally.

That’s not necessarily true. The Armband dupe from GW1 got outted because people doing it got stupid with their newfound wealth.

You also need to remember that 20g was far from cheap back then. I think I was scrambling to gather that much in SILVER.
someone just dump 100 of this in 5 mins
Even more evidence in my mind that this is just one person dumping. They waited a few days for the buy orders to go back up and then dumped some more.
Btw it wasn’t 100. It was minimum 40 though. There was an order for 25 at 286g (that I am pretty sure is made by the guy dumping to put a ‘minimum’ on the buy orders – it happens every dump) that was cancelled but not filled. The dump only went down to 311g so it was not filled. As I make this post more are being dumped though, it’s not over folks!
I wish the guy had waited a few more days though. My last couple of shields were so close to selling ;_;
Pretty funny really. Two days of no dumps and people panic buy the shields thinking “they’ll never be this low again!”

Well Anet will have no excuse anymore not to make them available next Halloween as they are not a rare skin anymore
I’ve never cared for the shield or the greatsaw myself, so my lack of interest in the skins may influence this, but: For those who are sure this is from a duping exploit, why in the world would you buy a bunch of them? I mean, I understand there can be short or long term profit, but that supposes ANet doesn’t wade in to undo it. If they can, anyway. Those who found it for cheap on the TP and always wanted the skin and buy one for themselves, maybe one or two for friends, shouldn’t be punished by losing the skin without getting back the gold spent especially if they bought without realizing anything fishy was going on. Yet gold refunds have a lot of pitfalls both specific and general.
If you buy tens of the skins, though, that’s way beyond personal use and clearly meant for profit reasons. If ANet can find a way to undo that, they likely will, and you might not get your gold back.
Well Anet will have no excuse anymore not to make them available next Halloween as they are not a rare skin anymore
No need to reintroduce them if they are no longer rare. Why put even more pressure on its value?
I agree with those saying it’s probably a hoarder. I’d like to throw in a perspective, as well, that not many people have considered, I don’t think. I’ve noticed a lot of people pointing out that it is not exactly the most profitable method to just dump hundreds of skins at once, as opposed to selling a couple at a high price every now and then. But did anyone consider that maybe the hoarder isn’t solely interested in making gold? I mean think about it, if you have thousands upon thousands of gold, and hundreds of skins worth hundreds of gold, is making gold really your top priority? I wouldn’t be surprised if this hoarder is just having fun watching his power to crash some of the most “prestigious” items in game. Everybody has fun in different ways, maybe this is more about flexing muscles than making gold. That’s about all I’ve got to say, I guess. Everyone else has covered the rest.
It could also be that hackers got a new password list allowing them to get into a large number of old dormant accounts and are selling off the skins quickly to get the gold before the banhammer comes down.
agree looks like someone is duping the shield and greatsaw greatsword skin, always someone dumping like 50 of them in 3 sec.
not duping, there was a time it was cheap, you could buy many and hold onto them. it is standard market manipulation.
Looks like our friend took a couple of days off and is back in style.

And it just keeps going. Someone has an endless supply of these things.
I’m just not buying someone bought hundreds when they first dropped ( and maybe more to explain todays endless supply ) Keep in mind, this was 3 months into the game. Sure, relatively speaking, they were cheap back then. But back then, 1 gold was maybe like 10 gold today.
When ArenaNet did the raffle thing two years later. They knew it was a rare item and wanted to create something fun to try for. And at the time it worked. I know I went for it. They limited the raffle to just 100, a very small fraction from what’s been magically being put up for sale today. If they knew there were hundreds/maybe thousands more out there, I don’t think they would have did the raffle thing.
I just don’t see any explanation of this other than someone has figured out how to duplicate the skin. If they have, that’s why they don’t care if they only get 400G, 300G, or even 200 G. They have a endless supply.
Maybe I’m all wrong, but I predict this will not stop until ArenaNet looks into it, and stops it…………piece.

If anything its good for the community, not everyones rich enough to pay 5k gold for a skin. I can finally afford it after saving 200 more gold.
“If anything its good for the community, not everyones rich enough to pay 5k gold for a skin. I can finally afford it after saving 200 more gold.”
Actually I agree. I bought one for 600 gold and felt lucky to get it at that price.
But I think you will have to admit, if this some kind of cheat, it needs to be stopped.
Otherwise, nothing is sacred and well have all kind of rare things selling for a next to nothing.
I just don’t see any explanation of this other than someone has figured out how to duplicate the skin.
The thing is though, if this were the case, it would be a trivial task for Anet to pop up their special game logs and see user X is listing a near constant supply of shields when they had either only one or a few prior to a set date and never had a record of buying any or receiving any as a gift.
I doubt there’s very little you do in game that isn’t recorded somewhere in some capacity. The catch is that they probably need to manually go in to investigate potential shenanigans. Suddenly spawning 1000 Ghastly shields is going to be pretty easy to spot as well as draw plenty of attention when you try to sell them.
If this were one guy duping crysocola orbs they would probably get away with it. Doing this to a shield that just a couple moths ago was going for nearly 1000g isn’t something that Anet is just going to miss.
I mean, it’s possible something fishy is going on but it seems rather unlikely.
Most of the disbelief going on probably just stems from false assumptions of how many Greatsaws and Shields there were in the game. No one outside of Anet knew how many popped out of the BLC’s in 2012 and when you couple that with the extremely limited supply added in later along with an ever climbing price tag, people just assume that there were never many in the game in the first place and the finite supply was being eaten up over time down to a very minute amount worthy of a 4 digit price tag.
Suddenly, some person/s starts selling off their supply for whatever reason (maybe they are leaving the game and just want to dump their loot?) and others start to sell their own shields as the price falls. Everyone sees this and thinks something wrong is happening simply because it contradicts assumptions that they held.
Hell, maybe the reason the staff isn’t moving is because there was a significantly smaller supply of staffs that spawned in 2012? There’s no reason to think there is an equal amount of all three weapon types and it makes sense when coupled with the fact that Necros and 2 melee staff classes are going to want a scythe staff while a giant cartoon chainsaw and a shield (any shield really) has a much smaller appeal when the allure of the “badge of how kittening rich I am” is removed. Sometimes even that’s not enough. Look at how many thief mains there are in the game who are swimming in gold yet still didn’t bother getting a Quip or Dreamer.
If someone dumped 300-400 scythes on the TP, they would probably be eaten up pretty quickly. The price would almost certainly plummet from 5000g but you probably wouldn’t see 200+ sitting on the TP at ~300g for very long either.
TLDR: Anet has the ability to see who is listing what on the TP. If there really is a dupe, it has probably already been fixed and no one is buying up the now extra supply that Anet decided to not remove from the TP for “reasons”. It’s extremely unlikely that said dupe is still in effect. If Smith can see a thread criticizing the functionality of the TP code, he can see a thread pointing out weird kitten happening to the GGS.

^ Good post and the other thing you have to ask yourself is why in 2014 were the number of each of the H’ween skins raffled off were chosen. One could suggest it was due to their price on the TP but I think it more likely it was due to the amount left in the game. It makes sense with what we’re seeing now. You also argue it was complete arbitrary but I reeeeallly doubt that.
The important numbers with their supply on the TP/lowest bid roughly at the time of H’ween (though really the decision would have been made earlier):
100 Ghastly shield skins (1200g, 6)
100 Greatsaw skins (2900g, 9)
200 Scythe skins (1900g, 16)
I don’t think only 100 shield and greatsaw skins being released had anything to do with their price but rather their overall supply in the game. The reality is that shields and greatsaw skins were hoarded to the extreme, the others, including scythe, were not.

With HoT/Raids release/Festivals/ alot of players came back to the game, all 3 skins crashed even Scythe at some point.
Then most recently it crashed further more with the release of SAB. Like some people pointed out if a few of the big hoarders bought them for 10-20g back in the day they probably don’t care selling it off for cheap.
Then the panick selling starts. Basically everyone who has them starts panicking because the price is crashing and lists theirs not wanting to have to wait for months/years for them to go back up again or risking they come back next halloween.
Let’s not forget all the people selling off their goods in need for money. When HoT came, alot of gold sinks came out and money was REALLY hard to make thus everything worth less. Things started picking up again but there’s still people who might want to buy the new orange SAB skins or other items for example.
That’s just my 2 cents outside of a dupe/exploit. If it’s legit, market will recover because a lot of people always wanted these skins and the nature of the supply.

There was a thread on reddit a day or two ago, someone got a Grinning shield skin from combining rare shields (This is a new version of the skin it’s an actual item too). If you look on the TP you’ll see there are now 2 entries for the item.

That’s why it’s dropping in price.
