Ya the server population is much more spread out now in comparison to back in august. It could be the amount of active players, but on the other hand it could just be most people are playing at higher levels than me now. Certain events definitely are not going to be doable at the rate that I have encountered people in zones though.

I just started leveling Elementalist and went up against the Sinister Triad in Brisban Wildlands earlier duo with an engineer. It was a hell of a fight let me tell you… That ebon guard tanky sylvari. Ya “Tanks” is right.

I agree. I sat around Mt. Maelstrom for a good hour or two waiting and asking for people to help clear the volcano, but there was maybe 2-3 in the zone? If there were any more they sure weren’t interested in helping or even responding…

Not every group event needs fixing imo, but I think any that directly impacts access to something relevant should be fixed. If someone is trying to get map completition or something, why should they be punished because there’s no one ever around to help them clear the event that’s always up?

A problem I see is that the rewards for doing these “dynamic” events is appalling. So people have learnt this now and simply do not want to waste time on it. A group of five only the other day were with me in The Iron Marches and did the Fire Shaman boss. We took around 15 mins to down him. A really fun fight in fact, I would say one of the best I have come across in open world. But after the fight, we got nothing at all for a reward. And I mean nothing. Not even some grey junk to sell. I am all for having fun and epic battles but please, reward me for time spent.

Pretty much the only option imo. At this point in time there’s not much fun in levelling alts and any new players that try out the game don’t get to experience it as intended without other players in the zones and the events left undone.

What we need is “inverse overflow”. Put servers together for underfilled areas. The distinction between realms is the real problem. There are more than just enough players to get at least one full instance of EVERY area of the world. But currently they spread across over 50 different servers.

Pretty much this. There are usually people in the zone but with the best loot coming from FOTM, most people in the zone are just there to level up faster or clear map completion, group events usually are not time efficient to do or worth it unless it is along their way, no one is going to go out of their way to do them anymore even if they drop a chest at the end of it.

They should make all group events drop bags containing fractal tokens, that would get people to go out of their way to help with these group events.

Agree with points Rynarx and others have made… But to even further their points, rewards are too uniform in terms of xp/karma/coin relative to the level of event. Defending the gates of Arah is a 14 minute timer quest that gives you the exact rewards as a 2 minute timer shelter defense; the real difference being generally shelter has more zerg mobs so more chances for drops. Similarly, why go kill backwards and do events when they give less xp/karma/coin (other than maybe nostalgia or for a chest which has a potential for a precusor drop)?

The other caveat is lack of consequence…. aside from a wp being contested and maybe NPCs aren’t in the area (because it’s enemy occupied), is there really consequences to doing/not doing stuff? Like what does Claw of Jormag not getting killed do for the rest of Forstgorge or even that all the snowy Norn areas? Not much. Even if you kill him, good job, see you in 3 hours…. huh?

Yes, the events are dynamic, but not really the point of them having real consequences on the world as much as providing minor annoyances/rewards within the map… and because of this in tandem with the other points mentioned (and possibly the wp costs), there’s not a lot of reason/purpose/incentive for folks to go around and do a variety of things.

Some changes that I think could help.

1) If an event is successfully completed, have the area remain in friendly control for a longer period. Two days ago I was farming Malchor’s. Saw the Melandru statue effect was up. Crossed the zone, and 20 minutes later it was down. 40 minutes afterwards, it was back up. That is too short given current population on many servers.

2) With regard to events that spawn around places of importance, put the things on a timer. If no one completes the event after a fairly lengthy time, the event fails, and the extra mobs despawn.

3) A revamp to the rewards system for open world content may make it more enticing for people to leave town and complete events. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the drop revamp in recent patch notes is working. I know of 4 exotics dropping in Cursed Shore in the last two days (2 were linked, and both I and my roomie got one). Prior to this, I had neither gotten nor seen one linked, and I’ve been in Orr a lot.

4) Don’t restrict waypoint travel if an area is contested. People are more likely to be willing to come in response to a call for help if they don’t have to cross half the zone fighting or running past mobs. The Grenth event in CS comes to mind, with the nearest open waypoint often being at Meddler’s.

I have been wondering about DE’s. I never see anyone leveling, I just picked this game up a few days ago. After I left the starter zone I hardly ever see anyone else or see any chat. I have been doing as many DE’s as possible but I get very little exp and rarely anything useful as a reward. I had to solo a champ yesterday, I bet it took 15-20 minutes and when it died I got nothing, NOTHING, but a little more exp than I would get killing a regular mob????

I was hoping this game would be teeming with people and it would be easy to find groups for DE’s and such, but I don’t really think they are worth it. WvWvW seems kind of empty most of the time as well. The pop on my server was high when I joined it but I don’t ever see anyone, I hate soloing and would like to at least see some guild spam so I could join one LOL.

I am almost to lvl 35 and hope I can get a group for a dung run.

What I’m seeing is a ginormous amount of people at the meta events that have chest rewards (so much so that we are getting huge lag lately) and fewer people seeking out the Champion events.

I did the Champion Fire Imp in Maelstrom the other day with a couple friends – the one where you find the 4 items and summon it at the lava waterfall. It was totally epic, challenging and fun but there was no chest or reward. So chances are I won’t seek that event out again.

Hoping that there are enough people to properly do what the game was designed for isn’t steamrolling content.

Me and my wife find it quite depressing that most events do not have enough people on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, what we were sold and what was so heavily hyped, isn’t working out so great.

Actually the past couple of posts have been talking out the way various game components are structured so that there’s not much incentive to do a variety of event, while the OP and a few of the earlier posts were talking about ways to still encourage folks in a zone with few player to participate in events (chicken or the egg if you will)… No one’s asking for anything handed on a silver platter, but that all content be desirable for players regardless of them being higher level.

Just looking at one side of that medal doesn’t make you right. Do u really thing even ONE gamescompany could life from only a few hardliners alone? It is ok if someone wants challanges in Games, but on the other hand a huge game needs a huge playerbase to keep the development going on. that is what the casual masses are for, so that you and your friends have new challenges to take care of on and on.

There have been quiet a few games designed for hardcoreplayers. But those didnĀ“t turn out to generate enough profit to be developed. Just a hint: things get easier in those games in order to stop demigration due to people leaving the game cause there are to few people. And GW2 always has been promoted to be rewarding for just playing the game, no matter how challeging it is for someone….. the player chooses. You must have missed the manifest. (i am pretty much sure they will go back to that way soon)

Not really the case here. What you end up with is a group of champions walking around the maps -forever- because there will never be enough players there to actually kill them.

The event should judge its severity based on the number of players in the area. If there are only two players around, it should scale from a champion event down to a veteran event. Three veterans would be a real challenge to two players, but three champions? Dream on. Not possible.

I’ve run into this problem on several occasions. I want to complete an event, but there are simply not enough people in the zone interested in doing it…or just not enough people PERIOD.

Many DE’s are not soloable and they are also a feature of this game. When players step around so much of the game because they feel it’s a waste of time, and those who are there to partake cannot because there aren’t enough people about on a regular basis then there is something in need of addressing. Which, as far as I can tell, is the point of this thread.

As it is, for many people, the rewards probably don’t justify, the time spent, waypoint costs, and gear repair bills, especially for high level toons.

yep, also referred to as underflow servers. I’ve been suggesting this over and over but no official squeak that Anet is even considering it.

It should be an easy coding fix since they can simply use the code they developed for overflow and just change the parameters.

Yah, right…. I’m in a friendly active guild where almost everyone and their alts is level 80. So what to do when leveling my alt? If I’m lucky I’ll get someone willing to help with a skill quest but even so it isn’t the fun big group experience which DEs are meant to be.

This totally! The overzealous nature of “making the economy realistic” is KILLING the game. If the game is not fun and/or frustrating, a “perfect” economy is pointless since no one will be there to use it.

Henchmen, imo, is not a fix. It’s a cudgel and easy patch to slap on that will end up with the same result – soloing content meant for multiple players, and eventually even with henchmen, with crap rewards, no one will bother even then.

It is not the mechanic. It is the reward system that is broken.

Group events that guarantee a splendid chest (preferably also with a chain that gives you reward of multiple events in a short time) do not have such problem. Any other group events that do not provide such bonuses are simply pointless if you have already done it once. You may end up failing the event after 20-30 minutes, and the reward is less than 1s + an expensive repair bill.

Group or not, some events are very hard and take more than 20 minutes to complete but give you the same reward as an event which can be completed in 10 seconds or so. Jumping into event for 10 seconds can reward you the exactly same amount of XP/karma/silver with anyone who has started it 20 minutes ago. All these are like a communist society. Whether you work or not does not matter. You only need to work a few hours to receive the same reward that is given to everyone. It is unfair and usually would only result in a recession of the society. Whoever realizes it would probably hesitate to run any event that is time costly.
