guild halls and smaller guilds
Scaling has its problems. Large guilds could get large amounts of mats donated, temporarily kick everyone out of the guild then take advantage of down scaling to build the guild hall, then reinvite everyone.
ANet may give it to you.
@ Suicidal Hamster – I totally understand where you’re coming from. I also have a small guild and we struggled to the point of utter frustration trying to get our guild hall. We had the gold and the favor, but we just couldn’t defeat the mordrem with our numbers. We were finally able to get it after I saw a post in the Players Helping Players forum https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players . Another small guild was seeking help to get their gh, and offered their help in return.
Not only did we get our hall and help them get theirs, but we made some good friends too.
I know the mats are going to take us a while, but we’ll get there.
I wish you the best of luck getting your hall!
The problem for small guilds is obtaining favor. Some missions … even the easier ones pose problems for small guilds…the wvw one where you capture a camp… hold it… and escort 20 dolyaks in an hour… we tried it and failed miserably… I understand working for things and take pride my very small guild has managed to make it to level 23… but much of that was hoarding influence before HoT… farming for mats I have no problem with… just favor seems to elude us weekly except for easy trek and easy bounty when you have basically five members (all close friends) and with work and school…many weeks we just cannot get the favor.
Set your Guild Missions to PvE. Most of those are easily possible with just a few people. The bounties, and maybe the treks might be the exception. (Though 6 locations in 20 minutes might be possible still if you use wiki)
Ingame Name: Guardian Erik
TBH no more than 10 players are contributing to my guild’s GH yet we’re at lvl 39 with most expensive upgrades out of the way. It’s not impossible to get it upgraded, it just takes a bit longer.
Money solves 99% of the problem in the world.
Just pull out your credit card…
Anyway someone already said it, even in large guild donation usually come from the same few people.
We are set to PvE… and 10 players is twice the amount of players we have. Favor is the issue not the mats so much. Mats mean farming. Something I do anyway.
Can you buy favor?
If not, open up guild mission to other players. Many guildless people do it just for the comodation.
Hopefully a net heard your complaint.

Can you buy favor?
Nope, influence being buyable was one of the reasons it didn’t carry over into HoT. They prob won’t reintroduce a way to buy it any time soon.

We set ours to PvE and so far we’ve only done treks. We do the easy one, 5 locations in 15 minutes, and we’ve managed to complete it with sometimes only 2 or 3 people. We did use wiki and it really helped. Of course, this entirely depended upon how hard it was to get to the marks. If we got lucky with several easy places, it went really well. It’s also really helpful if you have at least one person who has map completion.
I was in a small guild pre-hot, but our guild was WvW focused and I am a WVW player.
We used to run occasional havoc and BL defense, since it became virtually impossible for us to upgrade our guild so that its usable in WVW as it was pre-hot, everyone quit the game entirely except for me and 1 other guy. he is currently in a large guild, I still log on once in a great while and run with a larger group, but the small stuff is dead. Completely killed off.
You guys are lucky you are pve, otherwise there would be no point for you to even log in at all. In pve at least you get a good return for your time to grind the stuff out.
Sorry to hear that WvW missions seem to be a poor choice for small guilds. I think that everyone should be able to achieve what they want in this game in their preferred game mode. However, Treks are absolutely doable with 4 people and a good guide.(dulfy.net has one) You might also try cooperating with other small guilds – there are nice people out there who also need help. Like your guild, ours is close, and has been together a long time. And we were reluctant to enlist the help of strangers. Little Leota’s guild helped us claim our guild hall, (thanks again ROFL) and we helped them claim theirs. They’re nice people who have been very helpful. And we’re going to pool our efforts for guild missions. So you might try to enlist outside help in guild missions. If you don’t work well with a certain group, remember them and don’t work with them again. I don’t really think that it’s fair to small guilds. But that’s how Anet has made this all work, and they don’t seem inclined to change it. You might put up an ad in the players helping players forum, or just announce in map chat that you have a guild event going on.
re: Small guilds have to work so much harder for materials – Here’s a little bit of personal experience. I’m a member of a 98 member guild and 6 member guild. In the 98 person guild, about 25 to 30 people are active and 4 regularly donate materials. In the 6 person guild, 4 are active and 4 donate materials. And I’ve heard similar stories – large guilds are impersonal and many members don’t feel invested in the guild and don’t donate. So only the few, core members of the guild donate.
re: Small guilds can’t expand their guilds as easily larger guilds. – No they can’t, but it’s not that bad. My 98 member guild is currently at lvl 37, with almost all their upgrades unlocked, a little more than 3 months after HoT shipped. My 6 member guild has unlocked the merchant, anvil, Tavern, Mine, and Workshop after only 8 days. So we have merchant, armor repair, guild bank, and personal bank. All of the critically important things, IMO. After a little more than 1 week. Yes we saved up mats and gold ahead of time, but everyone who wants a guild hall should be doing that. The dumb thing was that we weren’t doing guild missions ahead of time. Or we’d be further along than we are.
So small guilds can do it. No, I don’t think it’s fair. But it has proved to be doable.
I would have no objection to small guild halls for small guilds – that can’t be expanded beyond a certain number of members without paying the difference in expense. This would keep small guild halls from being exploited by large guilds. I don’t think it’s that hard a thing, but Anet didn’t allow us that option.
