guildmate already has an Ascended Backpack
Then it makes one wonder. Why begin to phase out exotics for gear that is so easily obtainable after so many people spent a lot of time getting their exotics? I know there are only a few pieces right now, but eventually there will be more. People will eventually skip exotics all together since they are no longer part of the bridge
Because it’s a middle step between Exotics and Legendaries.. kind of like how Rares are a middlestep between masterwork and Exotic. Its not meant to be some incredible achievement, its just another step on a ladder that is just as effortless as the one before. A way to bridge the gap, nothing more.
Its just been so overblown you’d think we were getting the legendaries themselves.
My point is, that if it’s as easy to obtain ascended gear as AnemoneMeer says, then why would people hit 80 and aim for exotics when they can buy some cheap rares and spend a small amount of time making their own ascended gear and skip exotics all together

This is easy to obtain? Considering you still need an infusion for it and it is a single item slot?
Quick calculations, before prices have even sky-rocketted, show that this would cost you 60 gold for one item using Powerful Bloods and Ectos each at 20 silvers, which both are higher than right now.
Add in the fact that drop rates have been obliterated and this will soon cost 100g+ and it will be 100g that is insanely difficult to gain, as if it wasn’t already.

Because you’d be naked?
2 rings (random drops in the dungeon) and a backpack doesn’t offer much protection against the elements.
Because it’s a middle step between Exotics and Legendaries.
There is no legendary armour. There are no ascended weapons.
So how exactly is it a “middle step”…?
It’s just one (totally unnecessary and uninsteresting) step above exotic. I’d much rather see actual legendary armour, with a slot for plugging in custom visual effects (ex., lightning, shadow, poison cloud, fire, frost, heat wave, etc.), and the same stat budget as exotics.
Adding a new tier of armour with increased stats serves no purpose; it will only make current content less challenging and make the game less about skill and more about grind.

If you have enough credit, gold is nothing for you.
Maybe this is the reason that Anet think asc gears are fine. Someone will eventually pay — when they are out of patient.

“We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future”
Ascended weapons and other Legendary items (which could mean armour, since they used the word ‘items’ and not ‘weapons’) will be coming later. They said they’re spreading the release of Ascended items out so people have a chance to get the previous items first.

It isn’t ‘easy’ to obtain at all. It involves a grind, be it a direct or indirect one. Some people will be lucky enough to be able to throw gold at anything they need, which isn’t ideal for those of us who don’t devote our time to grinding money.

If they keep their promise, those legendaries will have the same cap with ascended items. So where is the “gap between gears” they mentioned?
Assume you need 3000 acient woods for one legendary.
The “gap” from exo to legendary is 3000 acient woods.
Now there are ascended gears, so most people will follow exo→ asc → legendary
Assume you need 1000 acient woods for one ascended
So if someone really follows the exo→ asc → legendary to upgrade his equipment, he’ll actually need more acient woods (4000).
So do ascended gears resolve anything? For players, the answer is obvious. Players need more time to grind; and the “gap” Anet mentioned will never be disappear or decreased. For Anet, maybe, ’cause more will pay for gems to transfer gems to gold. Anet can earn more money. However, those incoming money will base on tottering reputation ….
Well, all above are just my personal opinion ….

It was a grind, yes. I don’t think anyone has suggested otherwise.
But it was a grind with an end in sight. It was an achievable grind.
People could achieve it without repeating the same content over and over again. Endlessly grinding the same stuff for another stat upgrade is not comparable.

Such depth of understanding, I’m in awe of the intelligence. It’s called a plateau, you don’t walk right up to the mountain and suddenly find yourself at the top, you climb it. But once you get there you find that it’s a wide open space with many things to do that don’t involve the pointless exertion of endless climbing for a peak that keeps moving up the further you go.

They’re not talking about a gap in stats. They’re talking about a gap in a goal / progression.
Exotic armour and weapons were laughable easy to get (this coming from someone who plays 4 hours or less a week), so they needed to introduce another short-term goal in the meantime while people worked on the Legendary weapons, and for those who didn’t want Legendary (Named Exotics also had quite hefty requirements).
I’m not saying they should have raised stats or whatever, but that’s sort of what they mentioned in the Ascended gear blogpost:
“As we watch Guild Wars 2 mature in its Live environment, we have found that our most dedicated players were achieving their set of Exotic gear and hitting “the Legendary wall.” We designed the process of getting Legendary gear to be a long term goal, but players were ready to start on that path much sooner than we expected and were becoming frustrated with a lack of personal progression.”
If they pull this off right, people should be able to work towards their Ascended gear without compromising their progress for Legendary gear.

How does collecting the mats for ascended gear not directly compromise their progress for Legendary gear?
Legendary’s are still just as expensive.
Once they have their Ascended gear, then they still hit the “Legendary wall”.
Can you explain how this closed a gap?

I did not say stat gap, did I?
Thing is simple. No matter what you’re wearing, full set exo or full set asc, what you need for legendaries are fixed.
So what’s the meaning of asc gears? To let those who have spent too much time online and have already felt boring have something to do?
Yeah, 1 day to gain backslot asc gear, Anet’s wonderful plan would allow those boring guys to enjoy 20 more days ….
Perfect plan ever ….

I can’t. They haven’t released the other gear yet (although I’m aware that the back piece requires Ecto’s, Skill Points and T6 mats), so 1) we don’t know how it’s made for definite and 2) we don’t know the process in which the new Legendary items are made. They’ll be introducing a Scavenger Hunt for the pre-cursor. What’s to say they won’t change the rest?
That’s why I said ‘if they do it right’, rather than make it a statement of fact that you’d be able to.

1) Progression. As I said, if they do it right then it’ll be a goal to work towards alongside Legendary. If not, then they serve no other purpose.
But as I said above: they’ll be introducing new Legendary items along with Ascended items. We don’t know the process of creating them, so we can’t comment whether or not it’ll work like that. It’s just a case of waiting and seeing.
2) Some people work faster than others. It’s a fact. They said that people were achieving Exotics way faster than they expected. For all we know, this could be a basic back-piece that has a process to increase the Infusion slots / priming it to become a Legendary back-piece.

“big disadvantage” in WvWvW? Is 2 rings and a back, what reportedly is just a few stat points difference, max right now.
How bad are you that you have a big disadvantage because of a few stats points?

We’ve got the recipes for all of the Ascended gear already? I know what the back-piece recipe is, but what about the Rings? I think they were released in this patch anyway.
As to what I was saying: we don’t have the recipe for Ascended Armour or Weapons, or the new Legendary items. Therefore we can’t automatically assume that the process will be the same as the current Legendary weapons (given that they’re changing the way pre-cursors are gotten).
So I guess you could say that. At the same time, I’m saying wait and see before automatically assuming that people won’t be able to work at both goals at once.

So 60 hours just for the mats at a fairly good rate of one gold per hour. And diminishing returns makes efficiently farming a gold an hour unlikely. And if the drop rates don’t change back to an un-nerfed state, it will be 100 hours. Just for the mats. For one item.
Does no one else see a problem with this?

The cool thing in GW2 is if you don’t want to grind that gear, you don’t have to. Exotic gear works just as well as it ever did.
Anet : “The only way to mitigate Agony damage is by building up resistance through Infusions.”
We can’t use exotics to do this. So, unless we join the treadmill we can’t enjoy challenging new content. Not much room for choice there.
Honey, if you want to enjoy the new content, you’ll get the infusion gear, while enjoying challenging new content.
Are you implying it is easy to get and doesn’t need to be run repeatedly?
-Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet
It isn’t ‘easy’ to obtain at all. It involves a grind, be it a direct or indirect one. Some people will be lucky enough to be able to throw gold at anything they need, which isn’t ideal for those of us who don’t devote our time to grinding money.
Time to wake up buddy.
Getting to 80 was a grind.
Getting your exotics guess what…. oh thats right it was a grind.
I like how people seem to think that with ascended gear theres now a grind…. it was there all along. What do some of you smoke?
Getting to 80 was fun and a blast – guess what no grind.
Getting my exotics I bought with gold that I did playing the game and WvW.
Guess what No Grind and it was fun.Getting Ascend gear – Guess what – Grind and no fun.
Try again Please……
PS you did it wrong
Other users experience may vary but no grind for meDid you try the FotM? My initial runs were a lot of fun, even more than the dungeons we had at launch.

Exotic will put me at a big disadvantage in WvWvW. I tried the dungeons and hated them. Why can’t I get these items via WvWvW? Right now?
Well you can seemingly run t1 and get the one item that you need from these dungeons but if you cant do that much may be you do not need these items because its just so painful that your reward of the “self view” ideal that your week in wvw. Its on you to get your gear to what level you want its no one else job to tell you how to play or what to do.
Lol what? Hw many days of doing stuff I hate? Why is that fun?
Maybe this is the reason that Anet think asc gears are fine. Someone will eventually pay — when they are out of patient.
It is the basic strategy in F2P games. Make it disgustingly time intensive to get top end gear, but provide a massive shortcut if you are willing to pony up the cash. Generally you want to make the shortcut indirect, as that makes the intent less obvious. Otherwise you may actually get labeled as a P2W game.
The people in charge of monetization at Anet panicked when they realized that they had screwed up by making Exotics achievable to casuals without them buying gold. Hence the introduction of Ascended gear.

Dear god, the community’s collective intelligence must have flatlined after the WoW locusts returned.
Do I really have to tell you why this is really a bad statement?
This game should not be a JOB. T6 mats are goign to skyrocket. These people probably bought gold (and considering how conditioned they are to it in WoW I doubt from ANet’s gem store), the dungeons are 50% boring, and this is going against ANet’s do anything (WvW sPvP real PvE dungeons) philosophy.
So wrong, so many levels.
250 T6 mats
50 Ectos
24 skill points
1 Mists essenseThis is easy to obtain? Considering you still need an infusion for it and it is a single item slot?

I think with any of these things, the smart player will do a cost-benefit analysis of the utility he/she thinks will come of it.
For myself, I made one of the mystic forge recipes for a fancy exotic weapon. Yes, I could have bought a cheap exotic with same stats off the TP. Yes, I could have used my dungeon tokens (altho not to get the same stats). A lot of choices exist. I went ahead with the “expensive” choice because, hey I already had earned it as a side effect of playing the game. To me it was worth it.
From the looks of the ascended gear so far, if it’s gonna take that kind of outlay for an invisible piece with no discernible improvement… no, not worth it to me at this point.
Thus far, ANet has provided expensive ways and very cheap ways to get stuff. I got a couple sets of armor, all for free (karma and dungeon tokens), just by playing the game.

Agreed. So I am forced to endure misery to compete in WvWvW now? Isn’t this the opposite of their promise to us?

I’m saying if you do the process of enjoying the new content, the gear you need for it will happen as a side-effect.
Sorta like how you don’t need to grind karma. I never have, yet have 2 sets of karma armor. Just go play, have fun, and it piles up, almost by accident.
Same thing with infusions. Play the game. Enjoy new content as it comes each month. Trust in the system that you’ll have what you need, just the same as getting exotic gear. You can buy it if you’re that sort of person. Or you can just play and it comes along.

And at what point does the difference become discernible for you?
At what point do you think the stat increase is relevant and you can’t get the new gear “just by playing the game”? Will you start grinding, or stop playing?

I hate the new content, so there’s no enjoying it. Yet I have no other choice to get the 20%+ improved gear necessary for WvWvW, why can’t people get this?

Yeah, I tried that. In WvW. Badges. Because I wasn’t always teamed, I have I believe at this point over 1500 kills and less than 200 badges. That’s playing WvW on many characters. Yet I can’t buy a full set of level 80 badge gear for even one of them. Not only that, but the WvW badge gear comes in one set of stats only.
So playing the game my way already hasn’t worked out. I wanted to get my gear through badges by doing what I enjoyed, which was WvW. But even before this Ascended gear came along I was penalized for doing so and especially for trying to do so without manually making or joining a team.
I was already getting fed up, this Ascended gear is just the nail in the coffin.

You’re not forced. Even more, you’ll compete just as well in WvW if you don’t endure misery.
WvW is not like pvp in GW2. Your build, your gear really doesn’t contribute very much to the whole endeavor. A few stat points isn’t going to matter a lick. And if you’re the kind of player who needs every point he can get, you’re still gonna suck no matter what.
Relax and trust that by the time ascended gear gets past 3 accessory slots, by the time it makes a statistically-discernible difference, there’ll be a bunch of ways you can get that gear.

It doesn’t matter as much at the zergs, but whether you’re running supplies, scouting, ganking yakks, taking the pve objectives, or just getting back to the zerg after dying there are still plenty of instances where 1v1s or small fights occur. Yes it will matter.
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien
