gw2 in the media
Not too sure about the 100% part. GW2 seems different when it comes to actually being in game vs forums (or websites), for me atleast. Outside of the game you would assume that GW2 is the worst mmo in history, but actually playing the game, I have a whole different feeling.
It took GW 1 a while to get its sea legs so theres no reason not to expect the same for GW 2 .
The problem of course is that they’re still re-learning all of the things that they had to learn in GW1. Every chapter in GW1 made the mechanics better and better (I’m not talking balance — Nightfall finished any semblance of balance) — better for rez shrines, better for both friendly and mob AI, better for quality of life issues like build templates, reconnect, guild alliances, and better as far as story and quest lines.
The sad part is that they didn’t remember the lessons learned from GW1 when starting GW2. Things like paying for signet changes were removed in GW1 but added in the form of trait respec in GW2. No build templates, no alliances, no LFG tool…
They’ll get it, I think. Just like they got it in the first one. But having to go through the whole process yet again is a pain in the neck.
I guess the answer for me is that I still believe. I’m still shocked and bewildered and left feeling betrayed when they do things like enabling guesting without being able to play across regions, but the fact that it’s possible for me to feel betrayed screams that I still have some measure of faith in this company.

It happens with all newly released games.
They are over-hyped at the beginning, getting tons of amazing reviews that top the charts, making everyone buy into all the great features and innovation it is bringing. Then a few months down the road, people start talking about how the game really is. You get your mixed responses, people saying to give it another shot still, people bashing on everything negative about it without seeing any of the positive, etc etc.
About half a year later, most sites give bad reviews cause of a bad experience with one thing, while others are still enjoying the game for what else it has. Then in about a year or two, everything settles, patches are released to improve the game, community has settled in and started enjoying things again, and sites are starting to give a second chance at it after all the new updates.
This pretty much explains how all MMOs start out. MMOs are a rough path to take and usually cause the most pain/joy. The fans are very dedicated to this genre, and it definitely shows. Whether negative or positive, they express that deeply. But it takes time for the storm to calm. Just gotta have patience and wait for the dust to settle.
Edit: Sorry forgot to answer the question (my bad).
As for still believing, I don’t know. I still believe that one day this game will be big and become something amazing. I still believe that this game will change the way we play MMORPGs in the future. They have good ideas and some nice changes to the genre that I am happy to see.
But things have been done that seem so out of the element, that I am unsure whether I believe this game will still be what it once was. The game now is vastly different from the game that was advertised and sold to us when we got it. While it might be good for others, it is bad for those of us who wanted what was advertised and got something completely different instead.
So as for believing, probably not. Skeptical, yes. But I still have a bit of hope that things will turn around and take this game back to its former glory.

Pretty much what SpyderArachnid said. Developing an MMO is always a rough road. People look back at GW1 and see a brilliant game, not realizing that the 4th anniversary patch was what really made it a killer game.

recently the vibe/hype toward gw2 is getting a lot more negative in about 100% of the mmos websites.
i, like probably a lot of people here, feel like the game needs to find its footing.
whats your level of faith guys?
still believing?
Considering how most of your posts that I’ve seen are very negative with a “sky is falling” tone, I think this is case of you perceiving something that isn’t there.
Conversely, most of the articles I read are largely positive.

im as much negative as positive.
im no hater, and no fanboy.
im a third person.
This game seems very healthy. Tell me, which MMO out right now are more people positive about than GW2? TOR? Rift? WoW? TSW? Tera? FFXIV? The fact is, pointing out negatives gets more attention that writing about positives. Gaming “journalists”, as with real world journalists, always push for change. They never write about how much they like the status quo.
In game, everybody I meet seems to be having fun. I’ve only met ONE person that rage quit an event, and it was a world event not even a dungeon. My server seems extremely populated, my guild is very active, and map chat is always full of chatter. GW2 is doing great. It has some flaws, like every game, but it will only get better as time goes on.
I’m still enjoying the game, my friends are too.
GW2’s hype of being a gaming revolution did probably fall flat with some.
Others saw it as a fun game still, even if it wasn’t a WoW-killer or the revolution of the next gaming era.
Personally I never really bought into the gaming revolution campaign. I bought it because its Guild Wars, its set into their future, and I wanted to see what stories come out of it.
Chances are it will get a patch or two that will wow some audiences and then the popularity will jump. That’s what happens to some games. As it is this game isn’t that bad so as a starting point that’s rather good.
I just did a quick scan of MMO sites I read and I didn’t see this wave of negative articles you claim OP.
RIP City of Heroes
It’s just settled into the same-old MMO mold and most players are in their usual MMO habits.
I log in for guild WvW raid, finish my daily in PvE and then do laps of Lion’s Arch for the rest of the day/week/month before I can earn more gated tokens for my BiS gear.

I have faith that this game will find its footing.
This is ArenaNet’s first MMO, so they are going through growing pains as they transition from a game maker to a game maintainer.
I haven’t seen waves of negative articles. I have seen a couple of tough questions asked though, and not always recently.
Near game launch, back in September, Massively basically asked Regina Buenaobra, whether they didn’t launch the forums with the game in order to hide negative feedback (choosing to use Reddit instead):
(Question) ArenaNet has been using Reddit to communicate important information to the community and create a dialogue between players while the official forums are offline, but more than one of our commenters and writers have expressed distaste for the medium, and the Reddit crowd is particularly friendly to GW2. The truth is, the vast majority of players would never think to visit Reddit for an explanation on why they were banned from GW2 or what the ETA for the trading post is. So why does ArenaNet continue to disseminate information over Reddit instead of its own website or a long-established fan gathering spot like Guild Wars Guru?
(Question) Presumably, the forums are down in relation to other outages across the Guild Wars 2 website and game. While the outage makes sense, it’s caused many of our readers to assume that ArenaNet is simply trying to prevent a mob of angry players from descending upon the forums. Has the staff made it a priority to get those forums back up so they can be used rather than third-party communication tools?
There was a more recent interview at the end of February, where DigitalSpy asked Colin Johanson about ArenaNet’s game launch having “addled servers” (but they prefaced that by mentioning most MMOs do):
(Question) Like most MMOs, Guild Wars 2 was addled by server problems at launch. Is this something you were fully prepared for?
I haven’t seen anything particularly negative. Those were 3 of the toughest questions I’ve seen in Guild Wars 2 interviews so far.
Not really a wave of bad press.
meaningful pvp:
open world pvp or moba style squad competitions, or huge dungeons with 3 parties from different servers thrown in for some pve/pvp mix action.
or
insanely difficult pve content
is what successlful endgames have been.
and gw2 is lacking both of them.
but im changing subject now, and im the op, kinda lame!
Not really a wave of bad press.
not as much bad press as a sentiment of stagnation and disapointement. before it was “hype” but now people are “lets wait and see, not sure, not believing right away, confused about the decisions, cant exactly explain why i feel meh” type of vibe.
but maybe i’m totally imagining that, hence this thread
Oh ok, I misunderstood.
Your title mentioned gw2 in the media, so I was looking there, and at reviews and interviews in gaming websites.
I’ve seen people complaining about Guild Wars 2 in gaming forums since the beginning.
Can’t say I’ve seen it get worse lately.
However, I have seen it spike a few times, for various triggers such as the introduction of Ascended gear, diminishing returns, etc.
I lost all faith in “media” recommendations of the entertainment value of video games. At best these “media” opinions represent only the individual opinions of the authors, at worst, well I won’t go into that. I have seen rave reviews given to the worst games (for me) and bad reviews given to some of my favorite games. I no longer even consider “media” opinion when purchasing new games, and definitely not in deciding if I should keep playing or recommending them to friends. Except for recommendations by personal friends, I now make purchase decisions based on forum posts of games I currently play. Recommendations (good or bad) made by posters who share my opinion (good or bad) of the current game are used directly. Recommendations made by posters who do not share my opinion are inverted. That is how I found out about GW2.
TLDR: Opinions are like kittens, everyone has one.
The problem of course is that they’re still re-learning all of the things that they had to learn in GW1. Every chapter in GW1 made the mechanics better and better …. and better as far as story and quest lines.

Disagreed?
I thought Prophecies had the best story, followed by Factions, then Nightfall and I didn’t like EotN’s storyline much at all.
I thought Factions had the best setting for their story though, so it is a close call between prophecies/factions for me.
i think my post wasnt clearly made.
i was more talking about the current vibe the current players have. and if youve seen any change on big mmos blogs, newssite, forums, comments, regular writers etc.
