The answer to your question is yes, no, I think so, I don’t think so, maybe.

Since ANet hasn’t released any hard numbers about how many account were bought in a long time or concurrency (the numbers on at any one time) any answer you get is going to be based on speculation, personal feelings about the game and personal observations.

Colin Johanson stated that GW2 has more players in WvW alone in any given week than GW1 had in the entire game.

Extra fun fact: the population of WvW who plays any given week regularly is larger than the entire population of all of Gw1 the game any given week for a large chunk of the games lifespan. Just want to put things in perspective, Gw1 was amazing, but there is a reason we made Gw2.

That is some information. But it’s soft numbers from 10 months ago about a game that is 22 months old. So it’s from back when the game was half as old and tells nothing about the current state of popularity.

Not that I don’t think the game is popular, just that we don’t have current numbers to say.

Guild Wars 2 almost has to have a higher population of gamers, because today, there are more gamers over all. So many people started gaming in the last five years.

It would be pretty odd if Guild Wars 1 had more people playing, considering how many people there are gaming.

Of course, you can also say there’s a lot more to choose from now, and Guild Wars 1 should have a higher population. lol

Well we do have financial statements where GW1 doesn’t even break out of the “Other Games” category which is a fraction of GW2’s revenue. That’s a pretty good indicator right there.

And GW2’s revenues are consistent with what they were 10 months ago.

Yah, or it’s a good indication that their gem store is bringing in a fair amount of money which is not exactly the same as popularity, population or high concurrency.

I think the best indication we will get is when they release the revenue numbers from the period around China release. Personally I would love for them to be more transparent and release sales of the game to date as well as concurrency, but it would seem that for business reasons they won’t. Which is one of the things that fuels the “game is dying” people.

People that don’t like the game will ALWAYS argue that the game is dying. Even with concrete black and white numbers. It is one of the problems in this modern age, everyone is a critic/expert even though they only know little or nothing on the topic.

I think GW2 is going into stagnant mode really fast. The following signs tell me this:

1. Guilds with majority of members offline for more than 3 weeks. I am in 4 fairly large guilds and its the same story everywhere.

2. Fewer of my sworn enemies are logging on. What? Only a fraction of the people in my blocked list are active at any given time, and yeah I have a fairly long blocked list.

3. Fewer of my followers and friends are online, almost in the same ratio as above.

If I were to speculate, then the population must have dropped significantly, probably down to 20% of what it used to be a couple of months after release.

Been there, done that. What’s next?

I read the WoW forums sometimes for amusement and to compare the things they complain about with what this forum complains about. I’ve read complaints about dead servers and and dead guilds. Posts by people who are on their nth guild because all the others have died. People who’ve switched to a busy server only to have it die also. I see posts by people who no longer have any of their friends logging on. I see complaints in that forum that the game is dying.

People come and go in both this game and that. They buy the game, play for a while then lose interest. There is a constant turnover of people. I don’t think you can really base how well a game is doing based on personal observation of your guild or lists because of the churn. It would really need to be based on numbers we don’t have, which is the concurrency as well as the numbers sold.

Many of the people in my guild who have left the game have come back. Some of those have stayed. This game isn’t for everyone. Neither is any MMO.

Seems to have a healthy population to me. But I don’t see the point in comparing it to Guild Wars 1, because the situations in their heyday were so completely different.

GW1 was a niche game. If you previously played WoW/EQ/or a clone of the two, you wouldn’t enjoy it’s mechanics.

I very much doubt the number of players in WvW alone would have outnumbered those in GW1 at it’s peak. But GW2 is a more ‘accessible’ game for the MMO crowd, ofcourse it would be able to draw in all kinds of gamers and perhaps manage to keep them here.

Still waiting for the things I love about GW1.
