hard to connect with the community ?
Yeah, I’ve noticed since I started back in 2012. It has a very different feel from previous MMO I played before. The guild community doesn’t seem to be as tight-knitted when it comes to guildies.
People are always doing their own thing at their own time, or if they do something with you, it’s cuz it benefits them in some way (to get an item or achievement), once they achieved their goal, they go back to doing their own thing. It’s super rare to find someone who wants to party with you for the sake of just hanging out and being “guildies”.
If I’ve had trouble connecting, it’s likely my own kitten fault. My desire to play any game as long as a lot of people play MMO’s has withered. I want to log in when I feel like it, play only as long as I want, and rarely feel chatty. All of that is antithetical to being a member of a community. Belonging is a social experience, and can only usually be had with effort on the part of the person looking to connect.
I don’t know if any of that resonates with your situation, but it is mine, and it’s all I’ve got without knowing more about how you play.

This is a big part of why I stopped playing for so long, which was well over a year. Life has changed, and I just don’t have the same amount of free time as I did 5-10 years ago, and the free time that I do have is frequently interrupted. The bottom line is that I simply can’t commit the hours into a game to really connect with the social aspect or large group content. And since that’s a big part of MMOs, I started playing games where I could play for 5-10 minutes at a time, and then go do something else if I had to.
The one thing GW2 has going for it compared to other MMOs is that many things are easily soloed, or drop-in/drop-out. So when I heard about the new expansion, I knew I wanted to start playing again, even if I don’t really have the time to do so. I’ll just have to do the content in small pieces, and it might take me a year to finish it!
I came back after 2 years too and map chat is weird now. It’s so silent like 90% of time…
(i’m guessing that’s because f2p players can’t talk in /m)
Even guild spam amount is not even close to what was years ago.
Saw few players with guild tag i was in years ago, so i guess it’s not dead yet. Doubt anyone there remembers me tho. Possibly all old guard gone and only new players, so i decided to not try contact them (yet). Doing everything solo at my own pace, finished Zhaitan arc on almost all characters, made thief and farming skill points for deadeye… still having fun again
My advice would be to join a smaller guild. I’m currently in two with about 150 members in each and usually about 60 online at one time. Even though I’m not the most sociable person – I’m often only on for short periods of time (less than an hour, often just a few minutes) and I don’t always talk when I am online – I feel like I’ve gotten to know some of the people in my guilds simply from it always being the same people I talk to.
It’s definitely harder to get to know people via map chat because now all PvE maps are shared you’re less likely to run into the same people all the time and (on EU servers especially) there’s a good chance a portion of the people on the map will not understand anything you say, unless you happen to be fluent in English, French, German and Spanish and feel like posting everything 4 times.
So I think guilds are the way to go and if you feel like your guild is too big to facilitate that the solution is simple – join a smaller guild. There’s a lot of them out there but you may have to go out of your way to find a good one as the small, close knit guilds are unlikely to be the ones spamming map chat for members. That rarely leads to a close community as it’s pretty random who you find to join and it’s unlikely they’ll feel any attachment to the guild.
My current guilds were both recommended to me by friends in-game when my previous guilds went inactive, and that’s one approach I definitely recommend. If you know someone you get along with and/or who has similar interests to you ask if they’re in a good guild which might take you.
If that’s not going to work then it’s time to go looking yourself. Think about what you want from a guild then look through adverts on this forum, on fan sites, or ask in-game for one that suits you. In my experience guilds with conditions on who can join are actually better – it means they’re taking the time to make sure new members are a good fit and means you know as soon as you join that you’ve got something in common with them.
After that it’s just like making friends with people in any situation – you need to spend time talking to them, doing stuff together, find out what your common interests are and focus on those. It will take time of course but hopefully it’s something you enjoy.

In Balthazar Order we always do whatever, whenever. We have a schedule and everyone can join if they want.Everything is optional and not forced upon. But if you are sociable you will always find someone to chat with.In the almost 4 years of having the guild I met amazing people and we are a community but that doesn’t mean we have to spend the entire time together. The guilds are more relaxed than in other games.

when I play the game its self . I work on things that interest me only . and keep all chats off even in towns I just do not chat that very much at all unless I do a world boss and need to know how to do that world boss if I not done it yet .
seeing walls of text and so forth not something I am into when playing a mmo . at first when the game came out their was a reason to be part of a guild to a small point . but after that was all changed well I dropped any and all guilds I was in and fully removed all chat apps from my computers .

Yeah, for some reason i forget that other language speakers play this game, and I also did not know that f2p people cant type in map chat..interesting change o_O
I think they stopped free accounts being able to use map chat so people can’t make a free account, spam abuse/gold selling messages and then when it gets banned just make another one and start over. They could still spam say chat, but obviously that has a lot less impact.
It’s definitely the restriction that bugs me most when I play my free account, mainly because I keep forgetting until I try to write something and can’t, but I also understand the reason for it.

Really? I play FFXIV, WOW and GW2.
GW2 is by FAR the most social mmorpg.
In WoW and FFXIV you almost never talk to anyone beside your guild. In FFXIV the cities are always packed, but no one ever talk to eachother.
In Guild Wars 2 you always see people talking in map chat. Try and join in and make some friends ^^
