There isnt really healing in the traditional sense in this game outside of the raid. But the closest to em would be a Ranger/Druid or Elementalist/Tempest

does it work more like in star wars the old republic where healers are basically a dps who can heal secondarily?

you can spec it out like that yes

ele can switch from damage fire and lighting, to condition earth, to healign water.

druid has the range damage and mobility, and can go into druid form for heals.

engineer can switch to healing kits

or my personal favorite, necro can trait to vamperic traits. with vamperic aura. so allies heal when they attack.
and you can pull their conditions to yourself to save them some trouble, and then consume the conditions to heal yourself.

or trait out so your shroud skill 4 heals allies around you (and teleports downed allies to you)

or theres the stealth medic thief.
it removes conditions from allies and heals them, when you stealth them (either with shadow refuge or blast stealths)
as well as stealthing them when you begin reviving a downed ally.

Its really only Elementalist and Druid.

Also remember most of the GW2 content is easy enough so everyone can roam around soloing stuff and heal themselves. Healers are only appearing at max level and even then in few selected spots (PvP, PvE raid, WvW groups).

short answer:
Elementalist (esp with Tempest spec) and Ranger (with Druid spec) are easily the best at healing allies.

more detailed answer:
You can build most classes to perform a variety of different roles.
While ele can be one of the best healers, you can also build elementalist to be the highest dps class in the game (with very little ally healing). One of the builds I run combines the two, somewhat. I take the main dps trait line (air) and also take the main healing traitline (water) and do most of the dps of a pure dps build but also a lot of healing (a lot less than a dedicated healing build can do, but still a lot of healing). Elementalist is also the class with the lowest base health and armor, but you can build it to be very tanky. Another elementalist build I run is fairly tanky, with a ton of ally healing, and does solid condition damage (DoTs)

Healing options: any class with healing stats…. even the ones I do not use, viability and succes depends a lot on your allies, as your DPS tends to be lower and most healing is focussed towards allies.

Consumables:

  1. Delicious riceballs: +100 healing +10% healing to allies
  2. Furious tuning crystals: +100 healing +5% of healing converted into ferocity or
  3. Bountiful sharpening stones: +100 power, +10% boon duration

Gear suggestions:

  1. Clerics
  2. Zealot
  3. Apothecary
  4. Shaman
  5. Magi
  6. Minstrel
  7. Nomad

Upgrade components

  1. Sigil of transference: + 10 % outgoing healing
  2. (Sigil of benevolence) + 0.5 % outgoing healing per kill, max 25 stacks (stacking no use in instanced content)
  3. (Sigil of life) + 10 healing per kill, max 25 stacks (stacking no use in instanced content)
  4. Runes of the monk: + 175 healing + 15 % boon duration, + 10 % outgoing healing

If possible:
Banner of Tactics: + 170 healing, + 10 % boon duration

Healers

  • Tempest (Elementalist) – Water/arcane/tempest healing build (staff or ?/wh)
  • Guardian – Valor/honor/virtues Mace/focus&hammer(or staff)
  • Druid – e.g. marksmanship/nature’s magic/druid, S/A & LB or Staff(s)

Support classes

  • Necromancer – bloodmagic/deathmagic/? D/F & Staff Transfusion/Vamp aura.
  • Warrior – Defence/Tactics/Discipline (hammer & mace/warhorn) Shout heal/banner
  • Herald (Revenant) Glint/Ventari healer, Staff & Sword/shield

I myself never used healers on mesmer (phantsasm regen, heal on shatter and so on), thief (heal when in stealth… venom share) and have little experience on engineer, but med kit and supply drop will provide some healing
