Before GW2 came out i purchased a gaming system capable of running it max. Along with that i bought a keyboard and mouse with both had a few programmable buttons.
I know that third-party software is illigal to use, but with the keyboard and mouse, there is a software application so i can fully enjoy all the possible functions of my keyboard and mouse.
I’ve contacted support about the issue of using the programmable buttons to add in a few combo’s aswell as a sorta ‘quick talk’ button. Not whole programs to sit back and let 1 button do everything, but just a bit extension and quick uses. After a couple e-mails this was the conclusion:
“I apologize, but we’re unable to say if this behavior will get you suspended from Guild Wars 2 or not. We can only officially support having each button on a multi-button mouse perform one keystroke. Beyond that, you do it at your own risk.”

I’m still not using the extended functions of the gear, purely out of fear that i will get banned for botting. I’m curious as of how the community thinks of this.

My cousin got a 3 day ban for using a macro on a G15 keyboard when he was afk. So I would say yes you will get in trouble if you get caught.

I think it’s pretty clear. One press of a button means 1 button pressed. The luxury of these keyboards is actually in rearranging buttons. Eg I have several buttons within tumbs reach on my Naga without ever programming a single one beyond mapping a key to it.

Furthermore… using programmable buttons gets you kicked out of any lanparty tournament if you’re interested in any of that. A G15 isn’t even allowed to pass the door in most lans. Using your system to the max does not mean cheating, it actually means optimizing your system so you can play to the best of your ability within the rule set of the game. Keep that in mind.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

I might be confused, but is setting the button to do more then one stroke really that big of a deal?

so you set it to do 2-5 on SB for example, you dont gain any advantage since the game still has to process you dont all the actions, and you have plenty of time to do it without the hardware. all it does is make your life easier. Its not even botting, Macros should be legit as long as you are not doing it while afk.

To me that is the diffrence in botting/macroing. Doing it while AFK is clearly wrong, but just doing it to make your play time easier/more enjoyable? its harmless. Programming a burst combo macro isnt even broken, since players can do it without the use of hardware. The hardware/macro gives the user no inherent advantage other then ease of use, which should be a non issue.

But thats just my opinion on the matter. But doing anything while AFK is botting and is scum tier.

I would interpret this as no macros that have delayed inputs.

I read and understand what support’s response to you was, but I think as long as you weren’t doing something like setting up a a delayed skill rotation to one button you’d be fine.

Likewise, setting up your move keys to spam your autoattack so it functions kinda like a turbo button would probably also be unacceptable.

But if you were simply setting up one button on your keypad to do two instant functions (let’s say select called target + gap closer skill) and you used that as part of your normal play that would probably not get you in trouble even though it’s not officially supported.

Very gray area.

If I want to program my keyboard to use an ability why is that a problem. This has been done for years in gaming you are only at a disadvantage if you choose to be. If it’s fast to dodge by using my G10 key and G9 key to use elite if on cooldown use utility 9.

The bad people force the good people to change their course(s) of action. If 100 bad people use software to do bad things, and 10 people use software to do good (well benign) things, they aren’t going to pick them out one by one. 1 Cut and the good fall with the bad. It isn’t personal.
