How are TP prices adversely affecting your gameplay when you never have to purchase anything from the TP?

Progression in this game is aesthetic.

The best aesthetics come from legendaries.

legendaries come from high end crafting mats and precursors.

precursors have a 0.001% drop rate in the real world.

This means the TP is the only non-RNG place where it will drop.

Otherwise you’re looking at approximately 10 years before your probability for a precursor starts to approach 1, assuming you get at least half the dragons and world events each day.

This means that in order to feel like you’re getting to your goal of that super-cool-looking weapon, your income needs to outpace inflation, even if just a little.

Oh.. and it means by the laws of probability that ANet really needs to increase the drop rates for precursors.. to make it fair primarily in events that require substantial effort (the temples, the world bosses, the dungeon bosses)

GW2 has some of the worst loot of any RPG game, period.

I beg to differ. WoW has the worst drop rates in any game that I’ve ever seen.

This game practically throws loot at you everytime you turn around.

You must not have played WoW in the past few years. Blizz literally hands out epic gear for zero effort now. GW2 RNG is a billion times worse.

My point was that legendaries and gear progression in general is not the goal for everyone. Aesthetics is subjective, some people might not even like how legendaries look, or just like other looks better (e.g. I have some basic leather armor looks on my norn char’s exotics, because I like it). I don’t say I wouldn’t transmog legendary looks if I liked those, I’m only saying that since I don’t want to do the grind for legendaries, I just simply don’t care, because in this game I can actually do this. It’s pure freedom. I can play this game the way I enjoy it and I don’t have to grind for it. This is a fact, I’m doing it.

I played WoW for 5 years so that’s where I’m coming from as well btw, but I didn’t play it for a year now, because I got completely bored of the grind- and gear-driven gameplay. I just don’t get why people seek for that in GW2. Even in WoW, gear was only a tool of progression for me, not the motivation.

Sounds to me like some people do not like the game but are still playing it.

Why ? Because you had different expectations?

I really wanted Duke Nukem 3D to be aweswome. It wasn’t. What did I do ? I shelved it and forgot about it. Instant fix.

You can hardly say it’s pure capitalism when the pool of supplies (whether gold or mats) is being controlled by “the government”.

I’m actually ok with the loot system and chance. It’s an economy, and it works — a lot of people feel like we make really good money and others moan that they don’t. Just like a real economy…

But I think the O.P. really has it wrong. Most concerns/complaints in the main forum are not about the loot systems, but rather about bugs, about ascended gear, the “trinity,” difficulty finding groups or fun things to do.

Thank you, mulch, for one of the few on-topic and reasonable replies.

I would hazard a guess that one of the reasons you’re ok with a lot of the systems in the game – especially the TP – is because you’re one of the top 1% who have benefited from it the most. I don’t say that as an insult – indeed, I think that means you’re much better at those games than most. Ultimately, though, my point was that “we make good money and others don’t” isn’t really the situation. It’s a tiny fraction – maybe hundreds – of people who make tens of thousands of gold. Millions of people do not. And it makes the millions feel left out / unbalanced / “unfair.”

As for “most of the complaints” on the forums… Well certainly we all have our opinions on what that might be. But my point there was that many, many people are complaining about things when really what they are ultimately complaining about is degressive random chance. People don’t complain about loot drops much, no: that’s not what I meant. They do complain about Halloween boxes, and Wintersday boxes, spending money on keys, and the mystic forge – ye kittens do they complain about the mystic forge. Those are all really one big complaint: degressive random chance. All those things work the same way. And my ultimate point was that the only way you can stop Anet from featuring these systems in their game is to make them less profitable than systems where you know what you are getting… so stop playing them!

As for everyone in this thread talking about DR: what are you talking about? Nothing in my post had anything to do with DR.

I laughed so hard when I read your post. You are obviously someone who’s in a large enough active guild that is filled with dungeoneers (in a game that was never meant to be about dungeons) who spends his time gathering the large amount of mats that drop only in dungeons at present (even with the current dungeon nerfs) who manipulates the HIGHLY regulated TP and gets large sums of gold from it judging by your reply to this poster.

Seriously. It’s hilarious. First of all, OP is absolutely right, jealous or not. Second, the dungeons in this game were never meant to be the sole focus, in fact their original statements specifically poo pooed the idea of the dungeons being any type of major part of the experience or focus for any part of the game. Third, just because YOU run dungeons to get the stuff you can sell doesn’t mean that’s how this game started out, originally one didn’t have to step one toe in a dungeon, and that’s the way it was meant to be. And finally, the TP is so highly regulated people have been abusing it since the start. They learned the system Anet is using and put in posts that are even under the vendor price STILL to this day making Anet have to go thru and correct them ad nauseum, AND Anet has to put in posts of items of their own to fix many of them. It’s definitely not a fair system at all.

It’s almost impossible to gear your toon the way you want to especially for those who started playing AFTER the loot drop/DR/MF fiasco that we’ve been dealing with for a month now and after the Nov 16th patch without buying gems.

Wow, I don’t think you could be any more wrong in your assessment of me. I’ve only run a few dungeons, and I make most of my money by buying materials from the TP and crafting them into items that I sell for profit. I don’t have large sums of gold because I spend it too fast, but that doesn’t matter because someone with 1000 x the gold I have does not alter how much fun I have when I play.

I can understand that people may feel frustrated about feeling “forced” to run dungeons, but I’ve only run fractals once myself. I don’t feel forced to do these things “just to keep up” with everyone else, as I feel the game doesn’t require me to do so in order to keep doing the things I enjoy doing. Yes, people are “compelled” to do them to earn gold that they might wish to spend on longer term goals such as legendaries, but I’d rather do something I enjoy than burn myself out in the process of achieving my goals.

It’s not impossible to gear your character without buying gems, there are exotics that are easy/cheap to obtain. If you want more rare/prestigious items, then it may take a longer to acquire them.
