just got a death threat in-game
If it’s still in your chat window, you can right click on their name and get a list of options. One should be to report them.
Otherwise, use the “Support” link at the top of the forum here, and go with that. Keep that screenshot.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
The best way was right then in game. Click on the persons name, select verbal abuse. They can check the chat logs to see.
I’m assuming you didn’t do that so go to support at https://help.guildwars2.com/anonymous_requests/new And make out a ticket with all the particulars such as date, time, names, etc. Include the screenshot.
I did that already. But I wouldn’t consider death threats a normal verbal abuse, and a person has to be pretty sick to make death threat. Anet should have live support persons on hand for these types of issues. I know WoW did.
If you had made an in-game report at the time, a ‘live’ GM would have seen it, and possibly taken action. Waiting to use the Support site, is fine and great for follow-up, but takes a lot more time.
You report them, put them on ignore and never hear from or see them again.
Its the Internet, they can’t come through your computer. And if you’re sharing real life information online for any reason at all, stop that.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.
/i’m a lesbiab… lesbiam… less bien… GIRLS/
The problem is internet these days you are being track no matter what you do. Even if you don’t share personal info you never know the amount of effort the person might go through to get you.
Personally I take these threats very seriously. A normal person don’t make these types of threats. At least I have never had these types of threats done to me anywhere online or off for years I have been online. I will take the proper action and follow through this issue to the end.
Even if he doesn’t take any violent actions. What if in the future, he make such threat to a kid who might be seriously frightened.
First, I am not a lawyer, nor am I trained in any legal profession. For real legal advice, you should hire a lawyer.
Report this to ArenaNet, either in-game or through a support ticket, and report it to the police. I have no doubt ArenaNet will take this very seriously. They might decide to report the incident to the police as well, on top of banning the account; however you should not assume that happens, nor that the authorities ArenaNet makes the report to follow through on it.
You should file a police report of your own.

While this is certainly the most likely outcome, it is something of a planning fallacy; you’re assuming that the threat itself is idle (such a thing is still a crime), an assumption that might be incorrect. Blocking the account would dampen the coercive effect of the threat, but not actually mitigate any other risk, especially if you’ve ever shared any identifying information online (you should consider any such information compromised, even if you later removed it). A determined individual needs surprisingly little information to construct a complete profile.
Someone literally making a death-threat online steps over the line of simple reporting to support/devs. This needs to be reported to the police as well.
While I am not a lawyer, I believe, if the person was really making a threat, it can be taken as a serious crime depending on the laws in the state that has jurisdiction.
For example, in the State of California:

Chapter VII. Crimes Against Public Peace and Welfare
I. BREACH OF THE PEACE AND RELATED OFFENSES
F. Criminal Threats.
Under [California Penal Code Section] 422(a), it is a crime to wilfully threaten to commit a crime that will result in death or great bodily injury to another person, with the specific intent that the statement is to be taken as a threat, even if the speaker does not intend to actually carry it out. The statement may be made verbally, in writing, or by means of an electronic communication device. (See infra, §25.) To be a violation of P.C. 422, the statement must be, “on its face and under the circumstances in which it is made, so unequivocal, unconditional, immediate, and specific as to convey to the person threatened a gravity of purpose and an immediate prospect of execution of the threat.” (See infra, §§26, 27.) The statement must cause the person “reasonably to be in sustained fear” for his or her own safety or that of his or her immediate family. (See infra, §28.) P.C.<<* p.651>> 422(b) and 422( c ) define “immediate family,” “electronic communication device,” and “electronic communication.”
Of course this would require a lawyer to actually look at the situation and make a call.
-Not trying to raise a ruckus, but these things need be taken seriously.
PS: Thank you Artanis, you and I share the same concern. (We posted at the same time.)

Couple quick notes. Firstoff, I am not a lawyer, but I am a second-year law student (I have had training in criminal law and criminal procedure).
If you are seeking serious legal advice, hire an attorney. Goldenwing above cited the correct secondary source for criminal law in California, but just like she and the poster above her said, you should always contact and speak with a full fledged attorney when dealing with legal issues.
I would strongly encourage you (as a random individual on the internet, not in a legal advisory capacity) to (1) file a report with ANet, before you do anything else. Next, if you are uncomfortable, I would (2) encourage you to file a police report. If you’re still worried, (3) speak with an attorney.
Good luck and stay safe. It’s really sad that things like this actually happen.

How do I report that to support?
I have the screenshot upon request.
I’ve had that happen particularly when some innovative criminal types have read things I’ve posted on the forums. some have actually gone into the game looked me up and trolled me and told me how they’d kill me if they ever saw me in real life.
Sad really.
here’s what you do.
logout
uninstall your gw2
throw your computer in the garbage
???
profit
Not sure if that’s a troll post or bad application of sarcasm. Either way, bad on you I say.

In cases like this context is important. Also being a online game it might be impossible for local police to do anything (if the person is in another country). Assuming everything is as it appears, then at the very least Anet should take action.
Thanks for the support guys.
I have reported to ANet. I’ll be filing a police report as well.
