kicked before last boss for no reason so their guildmate-friend could be invited while things were going fast and smooth. is it banable or perfectly legal?

If you encounter this often:
1st – enter the instance, solo, without LFG listing
2nd – open an LFG listing and wait for other people to join
3rd – now that you are instance owner, no one will kick you or else also lose progress

Great idea in theory but I don’t know how well that works in practice, I was party leader and near the end of Arah Storymode lost connection, as in total game client crash and shut down. But when I logged in again I could just rejoin my party in Arah, they hadn’t been kicked out just because the party leader (me) had. Correct me if I’m wrong though, but the leader disconnecting would surely be like the leader getting kicked by the other party members?

Not really because you’re still part of the party. When you DC or crash (or even just straight log out) you’re left in the party you were in for around 5 minutes or so (not sure the exact time frame), so as long as you log back in with in that time frame you’ll still be in your party and will be able to re-join your instance.

When people I’ve been partied with have logged out, after a while they get auto-kicked from parties I’m in (assuming we don’t remove them first to make room) that’s why I said there was a time frame. Honestly not sure what it is though. Of course it could have just been other party members removing the ones who have logged off and I’m just not paying attention.

I think what happens in if you log off the server knows you’re offline. But if you don’t give it the command to log off, I think there’s a check that it makes periodically to see if you’re there. I’ve been on mumble with people who say they’ve been kicked but I still see their portrait.

If you’re logging off completely it’s different because you’re informing the server of your intention to leave.

No. Regardless of disconnect method, when one disconnects they are left in their current party for ~5-10 minutes, or until they are removed from party. If you see someone go offline then drop from party quickly, it’s likely the user switching to invisible and leaving party.

I haven’t played an mmo yet where the kick option hasn’t been abused.

The only way to prevent this, sadly, is to be the instance owner.

Well the good thing about GW2 is, when you are kicked, you can que for a new group and while waiting, you have plenty to do. In a certain other mmo I used to play, when I would get kicked for absolutely nothing, I would be stuck for for hours, at times, with absolutely nothing to do while waiting for a new group. Of course I am no longer a player of that mmo.
