Lately I have been getting killed in Southsun Survival and PvE as my screen is still loading. Is there anything I can do to prevent that?

That happens to my friend too.

I wish it would happen to me so I didn’t have to go through it. (I just do it for the dailies).

My friend, lives in the US, but she has horrible lag. It takes forever for her to waypoint sometimes and today she landed in Verdant Brink, dead. Maybe your deaths are caused by lag as well.

It is not so much due to lag as in the screen is just loading and I just died after loading. Shouldn’t the game protect your character if it is still loading?

Well I know with my friend that her character is often visible at the way point well before she can actually see it has loaded. I don’t know how the game treats that. I can see her and other people could see her too. I guess the bad guys as well.

I don’t know enough (mostly nothing) about it though so maybe someone else will chime in with a more sensible idea.

There are two factors involved. One is network speed since the client needs to get the list of players and all the assets used to render them and disk speed which is just how quickly the client can pull the data from the disk. How fragmented is your GW2.dat?

Yes, I’ve had that problems a few times myself. It is rather frustrating to finally get through the loading screen only to find that you’re lying around dead

I don’t do that one often. Most of the time, by the time i appear, I’m already a wisp. I then spend the remaining time wandering around eating vengeance points. Not exactly the most exciting time I’ve ever had. Maybe the loading area needs to be a protected spot where you’re invulnerable until you leave it.

Loading in as a wisp in that one might also depend on the timing remaining. I am pretty sure you will always load in as a wisp if you join a game that has less than a certain amount of time left. Not sure about the actual breakpoint.

Having played a game that really harms you on dead, I never log out in unsave places

Fair enough, but that doesn’t help you if you run up all alive and healthy to the Activity NPC in LA, join the activity, and are dead when you load in.

It doesn’t bother me in Southsun since you get scavenging achieve points for picking up blue motes as a wisp and I can usually nab enough motes to drop a couple of pickpocket traps on still alive players. And I’m only there to get the daily anyway. Sanctum Sprint is the only activity I can be persuaded to go in just for the fun of the game.

If you’re playing Southsun for fun, then just stick around once the first match is over. You will be in at the start of the next match and alive.

There’s a couple of aspects of loading:

  • The server is telling the client to load a map.
  • The client is loading the map and the game recognizes this (this is when your character’s icon appears for the party).
  • The character can actually do something.

Most of the time, you are ‘protected’ at the second step; this is why sometimes you can’t rez someone kitten-loaded into the map (they haven’t finished loading).

I surmise, therefore, that something else is happening in Southsun Survivor that is different from other maps. So it’s not so much “killed in loading screen” as “killed in southsun survivor while loading”.

John Smith: “you should kill monsters, because killing monsters is awesome.”

Well one thing that is different is that you can degen to death. I think the source might even from yourself for the degen so that if there is code to protect against other things killing you it won’t work against you killing yourself.
