Q:
level 80 salvage or sell yellows?
A:
As a rule of thumb, if the rare weapon is worth more than the price of 1 ecto on the tp, sell it, otherwise salvage it.

Personally I tend to sell anything that goes for 35 silver or more, then salvage the rest for ectos.
ok many thank for reply! sometime when i salvage no ecto other time i get ecto. will have to be careful.
Similar to killermanjaro, I always check for 40s, sometimes 35
The general idea is, selling is a guaranteed value, salvaging can be 0c to 3xecto value, so that’s the gamble.
On a long term it seems you get out 0.875 ecto/rare with masters kit. Some crafting materials too, so round up to the value of 1 ecto.
Staff and Greatswords are worth the most, you can sell them all i think (they are used in mystic forge i think)
Personaly i salvage all rare, less effort

You may find the Sell or Salvage Ecto too useful for this, since it automates the process of determining the appropriate sale value to profit when comparing ecto vs gold.
Even takes an API key and provides advice on the content of your inventory. OTOH, from the tool:
Also, salvaged upgrade componenents and basic materials are not taken into account.
Salvage all rares, not worth your play time checking each one on tp.
I always sell all the rares because I have a horrible luck with Ecots. In the end, I get more money if I sell the rares. I’d rather take 25 silver than nothing. I used to salvage them (with silver-fed) but I stopped when I once got 36 Ectos out of 52 rares. That was the moment when I said “never again”, lol.

Leather rares and meta prefixes sell pretty well. If you know some of them its faster to know which ones to check. I know magi, rabid, cleric, shaman, etc, those are usually worth less than a sunday’s ecto with a hangover
There are a few notable types (particularly greatswords) that are worth checking the price for. It doesn’t really hurt to glance over the TP sell window.
But yea, if the price is close enough to an ecto and when you factor in extra materials and junk runes, it’s a good idea to salvage. The exception is when you are very poor and still need to constantly buy things, in which case getting a more constant flow of coin might be better as you may not be able to handle a bad streak of RNG well. In that case you want to sell. For people that don’t have any immediate need for gold, it makes more sense to invest in the long term.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Supporting.
Often it may be better to just sell depending on your current state of funds. If you have a good amount of coin then salvaging might be worth it, but I’d probably not sell anything lower than ~32 silver. If you don’t need the ecto you can at least do two things with it, salvage it for crystalline ore or sell it. But profit wise, I’d rather sell the ecto instead.
Everyone else has their own manner of handling rare 80s.

if you still have Magic find to collect and its not way higher then I would salvage – more fun and less hassle.

I salvage everything, but I already have more gold then i actually need. 3 level 80s all decked out (Only 80s I currently want to play with). So really just depends, if I needed gold or was below my personal threshold, I’d sell majority of the rares.
Usually, salvaging rares lands me 2 ecto about 25% of the time 1 50% of the time and 25% of none.
Also if still don’t need gold but ecto, it is a good way to build your stock up cheaply but slowly (still gotta count how much silver you’re wasting on master salvage kits if any).
So ask yourself this do I need gold
if yes sell it all.
If no salvage for mats (bonus if you want to craft you’ll have plenty goods to work with)
If no no but need cheap ecto also salavge.
I make about 100g every 7 days (playing casually 6-8hrs a day my hardcore 12hrs+ lol) just from selling mats, ectos included.
i play in HoT 75% of time 25% in base gw. No pvp, no wvw, no fractals, and no dungeons just pure open world content.
As for exotics if I don’t need the skin I sell them. Unless they are worth <= 1 gold then i salvage.
Anyways, what you do with your loots entirely up to you. Think we all manage things differently, find what works best for you and stick to it.

Directly from containers I assume. Never did ABML though, so not sure.
But they definately didnt come from salvaging rares. Unless you salvage the ectos also.

I used to check the price on the TP and to sell it if it was worth more than an ecto (as said above, you get 0.8 ecto / rare on average, but don’t forget the 15% transaction fee on the TP too), but it was too much hassle and I now salvage everything (not to mention you will need tons of ectos if you go for legendaries anyways).
If that’s what you chose to do too, in case you don’t know, this Salvage Kit is extremely useful (I craft one every time there’s a MF daily, and I still have plenty in my bank).
EDIT – As for the Essences of Luck, they’re contained in Bags of Loot too.

If you are actually getting a lot of these rares, you have another option. You could throw some in the mystic forge for a chance at a precursor. It’s pure gambling but you may get lucky…

You should have given that old developer a sandwich when you were asked, instead of blowing them off. Now your RNG has been cursed, and you will never get good loot again.
(Actually, with a 0.875 ecto-per-rare average you are only a couple of standard deviations away there, assuming you were using the silver-fed or master salvage kits. That’s within the realms of reasonable luck, and while sucky, I suspect it is balanced out by all the times you got more than 45 ectos out of a stack that size, but don’t remember.)

Yes, but not the materials you get from salvage, which makes it less accurate. I’d add at least 10 percent to the price there to account for the money you could instead make simply selling the leather, cloth, and metal salvaged out on the trading post.
if your in a hurry as i am in every event i participate in … Salvage blues , greens, and every yellow that’s “UNDER” 30 silver. Pocket the matts and collect the money later at the Tp.

All gear less than level 75 (whether Masterwork, Rare, or Exotic) — Salvage everything
For gear level 75+ I use this system:
Masterwork quality and below — Salvage everything.
Rare armor — Salvage everything.
Rare weapons — Mystic Forge everything. Separate into groups based on weapon types first, only forging swords with swords, scepters with scepters, etc.
Exotic armor — Check runes and item value first. If runes are worth the same or more than item price, salvage with Black Lion kit and sell rune. If not, check price of item on TP. Salvage if below 50s, sell if above.
Exotic weapons — Check sigils and item value first. If sigils are worth the same or more than item price, salvage with BL kit and sell sigil. If weapon is part of a collection I need, account bind it and unlock it for collection. If I already have it unlocked for collection, sell on TP if value is 2g+. If value is less than 2g, Mystic Forge it with two other exotics and one Mystic Forge Stone.
Granted, the system I use for Mystic Forging things does require a good chunk of storage space, so if you don’t have a personal storage guild you can use for this it may not be as effective for your purposes. Also, MFing stuff is generally understood as flushing it down the toilet as the “return on investment” is usually zilch, but I’ve gotten most of my precursors in this fashion.
I used to Mystic Forge rare and exotic armors, too, for the chance at getting expensive exotic runes, but I noticed that by doing this in addition to all the weapons I was getting exactly zero ecto. So now I salvage those.

For this reason, I’ll salvage even if the rare item sells for a bit more.
The biggest advantage is of course, time, where selling a stack of ectos is faster than selling 200 rares individually. Selling is really for those folks who need gold asap. A string of 100 bad RNG rolls would be like 20 gold; most established players aren’t going to need 20 gold right now but a player without so much gold might not appreciate the swing.
