yes git gud, learn to dodge, blah blah blah

How is this OK that a spider or a little mushroom can two shot my level 80 warrior fully geared in knight armor with all the specializations skills unlocked?

I know the game hasn’t raised the level cap since launch, but are these new mob types in HoT (not talking about elite, or champs) really level 80? the amount of damage they do is way beyond the normal mobs in tyria. How is this acceptable for players not feel that the gear makes zero difference? Does ANet really want everyone to run berserker adjust spam dodge? or skip mobs?

This game doesnt have hack and slash, mindless auto attack without moving implemented in the game. For all max level content, it will be difficult, its how it is intended to be. Sometimes they nerf a few things so its not overly difficult to the point where its annoying, but it will always be harder than the average MMO.

GW2’s progression and exploration system utilises scaling, meaning every zone (bar the very low level ones) pose valid and decent challenge to most players regardless of level.

I for one absolutely love that you can’t just decimate low level things on a maxed out character and that no matter how strong you get every map is still a valid place to explore and do events in

Wearing beserker gear would actually make that situation worse since it has no defensive stats at all – whereas knights gear gives a bonus to toughness which raises your armour rating.

Skipping mobs is also likely to make it worse, because then they’ll chase you and you may end up having to fight them and whatever else you run into at the same time. Or in the case of spiders they’ll pull or immobilise you when you attempt to run past, so you lose the opportunity to attack first and they get some extra hits in while you’re stuck.

But yes, mobs in HoT were intentionally designed to be harder to fight than the ones in the core maps because HoT was designed for players who had already completed everything else, and particularly aimed at the subset of them who (at the time) kept insisting the game was too easy and it ‘needed’ harder content to keep people interested. As someone on this forum says in their signature ‘be careful what you wish for, Anet may give it to you’.

The best approach I’ve found is simply to take your time so you don’t get overwhelmed with enemies and learn what works against each one – either by trial and error or by reading the info below their health bar. Or both.

For example spiders do a lot of their damage from conditions, so condition removal is important, and as I mentioned earlier they tend to immobilise you so either a way to break free or using a ranged weapon (so you can keep attacking while stuck in place) will be a big help. And if possible seeing them coming (or standing in your path) so you can attack first – at the very least it gives you a headstart on removing their health before they hit you, but depending on your build you might be able to apply conditions that will continue to injure them even if you’re disabled or you could stun them or something to stop them fighting back.

The question is which spider, which mushrooms. Spiders are generally not a problem, mushrooms generally are. The poison spray of spiders is telegraphed, the various mushroom actions, charge, carpet bomb etc are not and you can run out of dodge. Don’t fight multiples is a really good bit of advice as well.

Also, I know you said your character is fully geared in knights armour with all the specialisations unlocked, but that doesn’t really mean much.

Are they wearing exotic armour? Ascended? Rare? Does it have a full set of matching runes, and if so are they ones that make sense for your build? Have you selected specialisations and traits which suit a knights build and work together? Do you understand what they do and what they don’t do? (Aka your characters strengths and weaknesses.) What about your skills and weapons?

This game is quite different to some MMOs in that it’s not a straight-forward numbers game. There aren’t many tiers of equipment and they don’t actually make a huge difference to your stats – certainly not to the point where a max level character in top tier equipment can expect to effortlessly decimate any enemy. It’s more about creating an effective build – choosing equipment, upgrades, skills and specialisations that work well together and knowing how to use them.

There’s not much difference in stats between a fresh level 80 in level/story reward equipment or the equipment from the booster and a 5 year old character in full ascended gear. But there is a huge difference between a fresh level 80 in whatever gear they’ve come across (boosted, story, drops etc.) and a carefully designed level 80 in full exotics (or more likely exotic armour and weapons and ascended trinkets) with a build the player understands and knows how to use effectively.

Yeah, I just returned as well. The HoT maps are pretty punishing and not that fun for me as well. I like the elite specs from HoT thou so I get the chore of trying to get my alts from one champion spawning HP to another champion spawning HP in the HoT maps.

My advice is to skip as many mobs as possible. HoT mobs are just not worth fighting unless they are part of an event. I make sure to run some type of condi cleansing ability as well.

Assuming you are wearing exotic armor and trinkets, post a picture of you loosing half your health to 1 hit from a non-champion or non-elite mushroom/spider. If you can’t then you are lying. If you arent fully equipped with exotics, then maybe get some before going into an expansion area.

…whose only attack is running in a straight line, but if you’re anywhere within range 300, you’re knocked down long enough to lose a boxing match. :\

Which is probably the most irritating thing about HoT. It’s not always the damaging mobs, but the cheap ones with zero-effort, no-counter attacks.

Many alts; handle it!

Depends which mob do you fight with.
And also, a good thing about open world pve is that you can build your character using items from differents sets ( not necessarily “full” berserk or knight, but a mix of more different sets ).

Some monsters ( or some monster attacks tbh ) can take you down with one hit, but knowing that you could manage to avoid it ( warrior have high hp, heavy armor, invulnerabilities from passives/skills/weapons, and also a good healing sustain through signet and masteries ).

I am saying that playing a thief, cause i tend to go down with less hit than you ( 11k health ).

You have to learn monsters attacks, and ofc sometimes can happen that, if you don’t know their animation, you go down with 1 ore few hit.

A screenshot would help greatly. Specify the area this thing was in, what grade of armor you were using, and what it hit you with from the combat logs.

It’s also possible the spider in question was scaled up, as enemies can scale up to Lv84 for no good reason.

Of course, being two hit downed by a spider…not fun or fair if this is the case.
