Even since the beta weekends i have been wondering, why there is a difference in movement speed in and out of combat. Well i have my theories about it but that is not the point why i created this topic.

My real question is, is this difference good or should it be changed?

Personlly i would prefer the same movment speed in and out of combat.

Probably to prevent players to escaping too easily from mobs and/or not making them too slow while traveling.

I don’t like it either. Feels unnatural.

it’s a balance thing, please don’t engage in mental gymnastics to try to justify this through lore.

Well.. play a Mesmer.. movement speed just becomes a slow motion blur after a while.

I would hazard a guess ANET would make a tidy pot of gold each month if they only introduced long lasting speed buff pots. I wouldn’t mind in combat movement reductions if base movement for many classes wasn’t so miserably slow.. its like watching paint dry running across maps like Orr, Straits etc. where active WP’s are all but non-existent.

Out of combat you are all carefree and stuff and can use extra muscles to speed up your travel. When you get in combat you must transfer those muscles to other regions of your body to charge up your skills. Don’t question it, it makes perfect sense, trust me.

and this is why mental gymnastics should not be an official sport.

Yea, it’s the same reason why games like WoW prevent you from mounting up during combat. If you moved as quickly in combat as the out of combat speed, then it would be too easy to run away from stuff and combat would be too chaotic.

Honestly I’d personally prefer always moving in combat speed over having this huge difference between combat and out-of-combat, especially considering the unreliable and clunky reset-system we have.

why do you think it would be too chaotic that games like dynasty warriors seem to be the very embodiment of chaos and unplayability to you?

Are you serious?

Just turn the camera to the side while you run, even basic running is faster than an Olympic gold medalist, with swiftness you’re neck to neck with a sports car.

And without movement speed reduction you’d never catch a Thief for example, it’s a game mechanic that players have been trying to get rid of and if that day ever comes they won’t shut up till it gets back, just like what happened to titles.

I think the thief example, is bad as it would only apply to someone who wasnt engaged with the thief thus out of combat.

Ahh maybe i formulated my post wrong. I meant it more in the way that it feels strange, not from a balance standpoint but from a personal point of view. This is also the reason why i would avoid the mount agrument, because well, wouldnt you expect that a mount gives you a different movment speed?

I also dont expect it to change nor do i think it makes a big impact and should be changed no matter what, it is only, it feels off sometimes…
