me and my friend are starting up and we’re looking for a server with a good mixture of PvE and WvW, we’re not much into the sPvP and tPvP concepts.

i’ve been told that blackgate => sanctum of rall > tarnished coast > jade quarry

unfortunately blackgate and tarnished coast is full, leaving us with two options, i’d just like people from those servers to step up and tell us what their servers are like and if what i’ve been told is accurate.

You are going to find good WvW action on pretty much any server. The top rated servers just have more people playing consistently day and night, and from what I understand you will face a lot of really large scale fights (harder to get small roaming battles or solo fights), major skill lag, and a lot of general slowdown with the Anet servers struggling to keep pace. You will also run into queues more often, meaning you may have to wait to play. On the upside, these servers will be well organized with leadership and a lot of action.

If you want to be able to jump into WvW, not wait for a queue, and perhaps run with small groups you should look at some of the mid-tier servers, say ranks 8-19 or so. You will still find a lot of action, but the size of the fights will generally be smaller, so less skill lag and more opportunity for skirmishes and solo fights, and fewer to no queues.

A couple nights ago on SoR we created an army of Omega Golems to take Blackgate’s borderland – for fun!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXCj7HjQD6w

We have great, active commanders, a serverwide Teamspeak to coordinate strategies, workshops for new WvW players and a very active, friendly PvE scene.

I will warn you however that WvW queues are often 3 hours long on reset night and you will often end up in overflow servers on the weekend.

I think the server you’re looking for is Gate of Madness. We aren’t a “top tier” server for WvW, but we do have an active player base for it and we’ve been on this winking streak for the past 2 months, so you definitely won’t be let down. We’ve also got the largest PvE community of any server (larger than TC, and that’s from experience). People on GoM are generally pretty friendly, and I think you’d appreciate our community.

P.S: No WvW queues aside from the occasional 10-20 minute queue in EB that spans the hour that the West and East coast prime times overlap.

Actually, Borlis Pass has a great WvW community and we are right in the middle of the WvW rankings. We have a server TeamSpeak and have been slowly moving our way up in the rankings. We don’t have the downside of queues (except on occasion), and you should rarely run into skill lag. Plus, you will be able to find small skirmish battles or solo play since the maps wont be crowded with huge armies roaming 24/7 crushing anything that’s not 70+ strong for manpower.

If you want to be part of a growing, improving server, and want to join a server where your addition could actually be of help, the Borlis Pass might be a good choice.

Tarnished Coast is a bandwagon server with several hour queues during work time on weekdays. The old, good TC community just isn’t there anymore.

Yeah. The new matchup system seems to either have fired us up. Or been kind to us. But a winning streak, we are on. Dunno bout how it affecting tier rankings. I never look at that stuff. I dun care beyond if we are winning or not.

You don’t want to come to Tarnished Coast. We have too many people already. I heard there are other good servers out there too. lol

I agree with Vayne. I recently left TC because of the state of WvW. (Queue times, zerg fighting, etc…)

TC is also right on the border of being full. I suspect that if TC is ever consistently full people will decide that there’s a limit to how far TC will go in WvW (because of the strong PvE RP community that does not WvW) and jump off the bandwagon.

I think it depends on what you want. Here is my recent experiences (over the past month) in T2, some wait times all the time during NA prime time, long wait times for EB lots of Zerg fights (although there is at least one awesome counter-zerg guild on TC).

In T6, almost always outmanned. Never a queue. Roaming groups of thieves who do a coordinated gank of solo players. Compared to T2 LOTS of thieves. People still run in zergs but a smaller zerg. Smaller numbers makes siege even more deadly.

In T4, I’ve only been there for the weekend but it seems to be some zergs some small groups. Occassional outmanned buffs on the borderlands. Rarely a queue.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

Pretty much any server in the top ten wvw rankings will be good. I’ve guested to almost all of them for pve stuff and there are people doing stuff on all of them. I’m personally on Crystal Desert, and we may not be the best in wvw but I can always get on without a queue (except for reset nights), there are always zerg fights if your into big stuff, and there are always roamers if youre into the small 1v1’s or 2v2’s etc. Also in pve there is usually always people roaming around maps doing events and such. On occasion you will get bumped to the overflow when a world boss comes up but that’s uncommon.

I would suggest Maguuma, I heard they were actively recruiting a while back and they have a strong WvW presence.

Sanctum of Rall is a great choice, too. Ask someone there to tell you where did that name come from.

As a member of Sanctum of Rall,

Honestly any server in the top 10 will be give you good competitive WvW matches.
The top 4 servers while we have some of the best WvW guilds out there are there because we have a lot of players in non typical timeslots. Also they have built enough server chemistry that most of the big guilds have been around a long time (8+ months or since the server was tier 6 in SoR’s case) and have no intention of leaving.

Many people from the top 4 will actually tell you not to come to them because they care more about being able to get into WvW in a timely fashion than they do about getting more players at this point. People who want to be on a top server often fail to realize that in exchange for being a top server weekend US evening hours always have a 1+ hour queue so there is no WvW on demand at those hours.

Moral of the story is look into the community of the servers you are considering and expand you criteria a bit. Look at some of the other top servers not just the top 4 as some may surprise you.

If you choose Sanctum of Rall, we will welcome you with open arms, but most won’t push you to join like a military recruiter because we are happy with what we have. If you choose another of the top 4 we will welcome you with with a swift honorable death on the battlefield. If you heed my advice and end up choosing a lower top 10 server then I hope to meet you on the battlefield in the future.

I transferred to SoR about 2 weeks ago from a mid-tier server (Yaksbend) for the WvW. So far I’m enjoying it.

The great thing about SoR is the open teamspeak channel where you’re welcome to join in on any guild channel and work with them in WvW (of course though there are other servers that do it). There are also borderland channels where multiple guilds will go there.

That’s a big thing for me because I can’t be bothered to go to a guild-dedicated mumble/ts. It’s very convenient.

The guilds for the most part use good tactics and are generally respectful (except one unnamed guild).

PvE is good, but I don’t think it’s as good as TC’s. At least you can guest for PvE.

The thing about TC is that there are too many people there. So many habitants on TC touted their own horn and advertised themselves as the ‘unofficial PvE’ server, so people kept guesting there for events and temple farming.

If you want sufficient PvE, I suggest a mid-tiered server that has limited overflows. I’ve often found IoJ to be perfect for this.
