TL:DR:
-Never trade via mail with strangers.
-Chat codes exist and anyone can link any item in the game, even those that dont exist such as paper bag hats.
-Add the player on friends list and check the amount of AP it has, its not a very good indication on how much the player was active but it does give you a rough idea.
-If a player mails a large amount of gold to another player, the player sending the gold could get autoflagged as a goldseller and get punished.

Unless you are playing with friends and you guys mail eachother some gear they dont/cant use thats fine but heres

Heres a little story i had today in Lions arch.
Apparently there was a person standing infront of the trading post for hours and he was whispering players a lot.

He whispered me starting with complimenting me and my viking looking norn.

He offerend to sell his Twilight which he linked in the chat (everyone can do that with chat codes). But the problem is he doesnt have enough money to put it up for sale on the trading post, so mail trade is the only option.

I ask him for how much,he tells me 1000 gold.
I ask him howcome a person who has a non soulbound twilight doesnt have 50 gold to post the weapon on the tp? (TP requires 5% fee to list the item for sale, and takes 10% more when it sells, so you really do need just 50 gold to put up a 1000g worth item)

He starts explainig that i am wrong and that he needs 150 gold to set the item up for sale. I try to explain him that he only needs 50, and the other 100gold will be reduced from the sale later when he sells it.

He then starts explaining that im wrong again, and that it is actually 150 at start and 300 later, and that he actually needs 450 in total….

I ask him why does he need 1000gold for? He replies he needs to give back 500gold to his friend that he borrowed gold from before.

I add him on friends list and see he only has 1200 AP and i see him using some sort of outfit to cover up his character).

Then he starts spamming me with things like " no dude, trust me, please im not lying"

I tell him i cant trust someone with 1200 AP that claims to have unbound twillight crafted that he wants to sell for 1/3rd of a price via mail cause he doesnt have 50 gold to put it up for sale on TP.

He starts calling me names, i call him a scammer and the conversation ends.
I go to /map chat and warn people about him and the conversation we had. I was happy that people instantly knew where the story was going towards and knew he was trying to scam.

The trading post is there for a reason. Player to player trading was a PITA in GW1. Good riddance.

Make sure to report people so that there is a record. Not aimed at anyone, just going into PSA mode.

Next time just asking him to mail you the legendary first and you will mail the gold when you got it in the mail.

If you have high ap you would totaly do it since chat logs are in game and getting your account banned for refusing would be stupid.

The TL;DR should simply be never trade via mail. I don;t even mail trade with friends i know in the game, trying to avoid the TP tax just isn;t worth the inevitable scam

Resident smug Englishman on the NA servers, just because.

By a strange coincidence, I’m currently writing a book on how to avoid being scammed in the game. If you want to pre-order a copy just mail me 20 gold, or 200 gold if you want to reserve the special, extra-shiny collector’s edition. The book is almost certainly nearly guaranteed to save you money in the long run.

Only if I can get a hard copy sent to my irl mail box, I will ofcourse send you the ingame gold when its deliverd

I never understood scammers and their way of thinking.

It’s so easy to tell the most of the time if someone is trying to scam items or gold, like this guy is this story. Twilight only for 1000g? He didn’t even care to check how trading post works.

When scammers fail, they starts begging and name calling. They are either young or stupid.

It’s funny how people who want to sell by mail ask you to trust them, when they refuse to trust you to send the gold after the item is received. Not that I would ever trade by mail. I trust no one, not even my kids when they want to explore on my account. So bought them their own.

I always just put the risk on the seller. Personally, I always follow through on my word. If they want to sell an item to me, I’m all for it. But they will have to be the ones to initiate the trade. It’s kind of like the Burden-of-Proof law, but with sales.

Not to sound like an kitten but anyone that trades via mail deserves everything they get. Sometimes people just need something like this to learn to never trust anyone online.

Surrender and serve me in life, or die and slave for me in death.

All they need to do is implement something like WoW had.. CoDs. The sender specifies how much gold the item he is sending is, and if the recipient doesn’t accept, the item gets sent back to the sender. Problem solved, and not terribly complicated to code.

But Anet, for their own reasons, want us to use their TP, and lose 15% every time.

I bind all of my keys to Gravedigger and rapidly roll my face across the keyboard while screaming
“I am teh Leetness!” at the top of my lungs, while rubbing baby oil all over myself.

This does not prevent scams. Guild Wars had (has) a player-to-player trading system, and players ended up (still end up) being scammed often.

Not to mention all the trade spam in chat. They call it Spamadan for a reason.

Thus, problem not solved.
