Hi,

I recently just bought guild wars 2 about 30 minutes ago lol.

It’s currently downloading, and I was wondering is it still a good game for new players? Like are there other new players in the starting zones? Is the meta OK? Just wondering!

Something called “new player experience” made the leveling process quite tedious. You’ll have a long road ahead of you if you want to compete on even grounds with those who started playing earlier.

I’m usually good with RPG combat. After years of WoW I decided to leave, the monthly payment was putting a dent in my wallet. I even heard on guild wars 2, PvP levels are balanced, only in arenas.

And thanks Kongkitten Merry Christmas to you too!

I believe GW2 is the best value for money in any game I’ve played except its predecessor, Guild Wars.

The implementation of mega-servers means that you will most likely see people in any zone. There may be a time you see too many people in a zone.

By meta, do you mean dungeons or PvP?

The dungeon meta sees some complaints by those who prefer the old trinity style group play. GW2 active combat requires players to dodge, block, reflect, etc. instead of depending on passive defense like in more traditional MMO’s. Also, while there are diverse gear stats, gear does not play a large part in determining the roles played in dungeons. Instead, the skills you choose to bring, your traits and your profession choice determine the role you’re in. Not everyone seems to accept or like this. Whether you will or not I cannot know.

The biggest issue with dungeon play is that relatively little has changed with the dungeons since launch. Many players know the strategies by heart. As with other games, once a dungeon is on farm, it loses some of the excitement, and established players may not want to take inexperienced players.

The best way around that issue, as with other games, would be to find a guild which advertises dungeons and wants new players. I still see plenty of guilds looking in game. I’m in North America, so I can’t say if that is so in Europe.

As to PvP, the primary issues seem to be about there being only one game mode in Structured PvP (though more modes have been discussed by ANet) and infrequency of balance passes. The current game mode is conquest. From what I can see, there seem to be multiple roles (bunker point-holder, point-capping). Of course, there’s going to

Maybe someone else can tell you more about the PvP meta, if that’s what you’re interested in.

Finally, if Realm v. Realm (called World vs. World vs World or WvWvW here) is your primary interest, you’d do well to look at https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/wvw . The highest rank realms tend to be the most active.

While tedium is somewhat subjective, it generally means boring due to being slow or long. The NPE did not increase leveling time. The NPE also had no effect on competing on an even keel with others. It could be argued that a change to the trait system did, but that took place months before NPE was introduced.

Lol. Thanks for all of the information!!!

I am more of a pve player, so I’ll be seeing more dungeons than PvP! Although, I might play a few rounds of wvwvw here and there.

Also, someone new to the game will not notice the difference. Their leveling experience will only be NPE. So to tell a new players it’s boring and tedious isn’t fair. I know lots of new players who do not feel that way!

- I believe the human condition is shared. If killing speed of monsters is acceptable for a character that is fully geared, it will certainly be less than acceptable for character with inferior gear and lack of access to relevant traits. Try taking upleveled character to WvW and start killing neutral monsters there to notice the difference. On the positive side OP will be happier when he can get those traits, if he doesn’t become bored and quit before that.

Compared to other MMOs, lvling up in GW2 is a walk in the park. So as a new player, I don’t think he will notice too much. The experience of exploring GW2 back in time is different than it is nowadays though. Nowadays, GW2 at early levels is more simliar to other MMOs while it was all about exploration and doing your own thing back in time.

It’s one of the best games you can buy for the price. It’s an extremely solid game, it just lacks on content updates IMO. By the time you get to the point of wanting more content there will likely be plenty of larger updates though.

There are some big issues I have with the core of the game, which makes the game just “solid” and not great or amazing though. You will probably enjoy the game more if you don’t start playing with high expectations.

Some starting advice once you’re out of the tutorial:

Go to your home city, and look around. Find a merchant that sells salvage kits and harvesting tools. Get one set each of the copper harvesting tools and a Basic Salvage Kit. Equip those tools on the character, keep the kit in your inventory. You also may want to pick up a few 4 slot bags to fill in your bag slots. Yes, the game will eventually give you some of all of these, but you can really put them to good use before then, so getting them early helps.

Second, look for the gate to Lion’s Arch within your starting town. When you pass through it, you’ll arrive in an area with the gates to all other starting cities. You don’t really need this right now, but you’ll want to know about it later.

Third, open your inventory and look for the little gear symbol at the top right. That’s a menu with some good functions to it. You’ll be using it a lot, especially “Deposit All Materials” and “Compact”. Materials are used in crafting, though you can sell them if you want.

Finally, harvest everything. Chop down every tree you can, mine every node of ore, pick every plant. They won’t appear on your mini-map at first, but they will eventually. Every harvest is worth EXP, and crafting is at least worth messing around with. On that note, anything you get that seems useless but says “Salvageable” on it, use the salvage kit on it to get the final item. Hides and destroyed garments are typical examples of this. You can salvage most unwanted gear in the same way, though some might be better off sold.

delicate, brick-like subtlety.

Thanks to everyone! And the person who said that i d better be prepared to be bored, I mostly play MMOs for the soul aspect of exploration and seeing other players doing the same quests as me, or just seeing other players randomly. Shallow, yes. Preference? YES. Oh and… I paid full price for the heroic edition.

If that’s your main goal, I think that GW2 has a lot to offer you. I’ve spent close to 2500 hours playing it, and still run across stuff I’ve never seen.

Awesome!!! I explore usually quite fast, while keeping up with the level cap of each zone. One example is Skyrim I explored everything in about 35 hours… :p idk if that’s impressive, but whatever. XD also, how often do public events spawn? And are there a lot of players in them? :o

Depends on the zone, the event, and perhaps even other events nearby. An example would be the Orr events to take over a temple. If you do that, then soon you get an event to defend that temple. If you fail to take it over, or fail to defend it, then soon the event to take it over will start again.

Apparently you have to remember that this is a 2-years-old MMO so the activity in lower levels isn’ttoo huge. However, you will, generally speaking, never have an issue meeting other players thanks to the game’s huge active player-base and megaservers.

You might like this, then. Some world bosses are on a timer, and there’s a place that tracks them and shows which one is next and the closest waypoint.
