But I will not buy it as I will not buy outfits.

Make it armor, and make me happy. (I know you’re past that stage) but I can still hope.

I WILL NOT BUY UNCUSTOMIZABLE OUTFITS.

I am sorry you feel this way. But there is limitations to how Armor works and how Outfits work, they have already said they can’t make outfits into armor. Its a technical limitation.

I would definitely buy that as armor. Still not buying any Outfits though. I won’t say never, but never is my intention. No mix ‘n’ match from ANet, no Gems from me.

No you have no idea what you are talking about.

This costume, do you like it just as it is? Well too bad, because if it was armor, it would have to look completely different in order to fit the modeling and rigging constraints of the game engine. That is just how it is, GW2 uses completely non-precomposed models made of dozens of complicated animation rigs receiving multiple commands at all times and capable of having parts working independent of each other. I know you don’t even know what that means, but that just drives my point home. What you are asking for isn’t possible under the system we have, and if the system were to be changed to make it possible, the system would not gain customization, but lose it.

You realize that doesn’t make any sense right? It’s the matter of minutes to cut the texture/mesh into separate pieces to make it a regular armor set.

Looks nice, but not as an outfit. Also, I think it’s pretty funny that the new outfits that have been coming out never include costume brawl weapons anymore. And they’re the same price as the old outfits!

It makes perfect sense. They can’t do it because its not a meshing issue. Its how they built their models. The post above explains it much better than I can. But I understand it. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean I don’t get why it is the way it is.

Believe it or not there are actually technical limitations. Why they can’t address these limitations is beyond me but if their resources are tied up with so many more pressing matters, I expect some good quality stuff in the next year.

I’m aware of that. I’m just going to remain optimistic since their resources are being tied up to the point where something like making outfits into armor is held back by the very real technical limitations. If they can’t address something so menial (being a limitation doesn’t necessarily make it insurmountable) – especially for an outfit like this one that doesn’t have too many flapping bits and pieces that they have to worry about, then I want to believe they’re working on something that is worth the cost.

It is beautiful….if you aren’t an asura female. If you’re an asura female….well…it’s great if you want to wear a suit. I feel like arenanet dropped the ball and went lazy with this. Not sure if they did the same to char. But….it does rightfully suck that female asuras have the same appearance as males. :/

I don’t understand. They released all of those skins in the first couple years that could easily be mixed and match. Suddenly now everything’s an “outfit” that can’t be mixed with anything else. I mean, what’s difficult about buying the outfit, it all goes into the wardrobe, then we can wear what we want? Honest question, not trying to troll, as I haven’t seen the posts about the technicalities of the outfits.

There is one costume where Asuran females wear a dress and not the male version, the Wintersday outfit (the Charr also).

Edit: but I have to say, the current outfit for females is for those that are more obviously “mammalian”. The chest region of the female Asura is flat and possibly there are problems with that and how the costume looks and fits.

Yes, The witch dress is different from the males, the wintersday dress is different. So there are dresses. And yes they did do the same to Char. I wouldn’t mind so much if they did across the board gender nuetral. But it’s not. It’s all over the place without much reason. Even the flat chest isn’t a valid excuse, because it can still be worked with. They have other armors that have near complete open chest, to say they can’t use the same cut of armor makes no sense at all, as armors care not for what is and is not covered. Twilight arbor light armor has what looks like a boob window with no boobs :P

I’m pretty sure there aren’t any technical limitations? I thought it was just extra work because of potential clipping.

I thought the “technical limitations” aspect was only in relation to the notion of allowing armor classes to wear stuff that isn’t their class.

Or words to that effect.

But it’s a matter of hours to ensure no clipping issues with every single other piece of armor that’s available in the game. I think ANet just doesn’t feel like having to listen to even more armor clipping issues complaints…

From a post some time back. It was talking about why the towns clothes were discontinued and costumes started but it also gives a reason why they make costumes and not armor.

Source.
“……When we started looking at bringing more of the clothing back into armor with mix and match styles there are some fundamental incompatible things between weight classes. (part of how we set up every armor to allow many dye channels and styles per piece).. There really is no way at this point over six years since we started development to make absolutely everything work together. So we needed something new to continue to grow in the future. Outfits give us a way to create highly stylized looks that aren’t constrained to armor slots or weight class……".

It looks nice, and is easy to use. But yes, I very much want to customize that. The high collar on the female Outfit clips through a lot of hairstyles. I also prefer no gloves. And more than anything else, I want 1-4 dyes channels per piece, not per entire costume.

I don’t want to come to the party wearing the same dress as everyone else, no matter how pretty it is. For me, customization is always needed. I want to express my own personal style and creativity, not be a cookie cutter copy of everyone around me. With Outfits, you may as well be wearing a neutral gray jumpsuit. I will not be buying any until they give me a lobotomy to remove my individual personality.

Why not just put the armor set into a package of 6 separate armor pieces.

After thinking about it more, I believe I was wrong about there being no technical constraints. That is, depending on how you look at it.

Notice how in the store, every skin set is for a specific armor class (heavy, medium, or light). There are a few exceptions to this rule: Single helmets, single gloves, single shoulders, and single boots (usable by any weight class).

But… no single pants and no single shirts. And I believe it was precisely that part of it (pants/shirts) that they said is designed in a specific way with rigging for each armor class. So doing something like making the dress outfit into a skin for each armor class may not even be logistically possible without horrific-looking graphical glitches, due to the way the models are set up.

I believe outfits (despite it not seeming like an intuitive answer) are an exception to this because they can work more like an overlay, as opposed to mixable pieces of armor. If that makes sense.

I’m not sure if all (or any) of what I said is true. But from what they have said about models before, I think something along those lines makes it harder than just clipping.

Or words to that effect.

Thank you! This is exactly how I feel and I’m getting frustrated with people dismissing customization as some unimportant thing. Character customization is a huge deal for many MMO players, and smart game companies know this and encourage it because it’s a very easy and cheap way to keep people playing (not to mention a great platform for cosmetic item sales in a cash shop). Anyone who doubts this should think long and hard about why the wardrobe was such a popular addition to this game.

And for the record, I’m not actually anti-outfit. I own a couple because I like having a way for my alts to look decent while leveling. Outfits are fine for what they are, but they can’t replace armor sets. They serve a totally different purpose. Some people might be fine with outfits despite the lack of customization, but some people also dye their armor only in Abyss and Celestial— does that mean we don’t need other dyes?
