my question is: why would i take a ascended item with a defensive or offensive slot instead of one with an utility slot?

Offensive infusion (only on offensive slot):
Mighty Infusion Basic +4 Power
Mighty Infusion Fine +5 Power +5 agony

Utility infusions (only on utility slot)
Magical Infusion Fine +20% magic find

Omni infusions (can be put on every slot)
Versatile Simple Infusion Basic +5 agony
Versatile Mighty Infusion Fine +5 Power +5 agony

utilty slots can get offensive statts, defensive statts and utility statts….

Take a look at the cost of a precise infusion vs a versatile precise infusion:

Precise Infusion:
250 Passion Flowers
100 Vicious Claws
50 Philsopher’s Stones
20 Mystic Coins

Versatile Precise Infusion:
100 Passion Flowers
250 Vicious Claws
100 Philsopher’s Stones
50 Mystic Coins

That is where the difference is. And only the amulets are available with a utility slot at the moment.

Personally, the extra +5 stat is not worth the cost. I’ll stick with my cheap +5 AR versatile simple infusion for now.

reasons to pick offense or defense over utility:
1) a lot of people think mf is useless, and don’t know where gf is used
2) only way to gain more AR for fotm 30+
3) min/maxing for PvP

So… if you are not into high level fractals (I’m on 21, and the group I regularly run fractals with has no interest in going above 30), nor if you are into min/maxing…. it still makes offensive/defensive slots nearly useless for the majority of the user base IMO.

I think it would be brilliant if Anet introduced a way to introducing Utility slots into ALL infused/ascended items. Might reduce the number of people/complaints of random pugs running all MF gear if we had a separate slot for MF/GF (note, I said, REDUCE… there is always going to be someone running MF gear on top of MF infusions slots). However, how game breaking this would be only Anet can tell…
