Lobby Based uses a hub-instanced design, like how GW did it. You only run into other characters at the hub/city but the various quests are instanced where you won’t run into other players not in your party. Example – GW, PSO

Open World, everyone plays on common maps with few instances. Essentially opposite of Lobby Based. Example – WoW, GW2, a great many MMOs.

Sandbox is an additional descriptor for open world. It’s opposite number is Amusement Park. In a sandbox world many activities are player created rather than premade by the developers (Amusement Park). Example – EVE.

The phrase open world got co-opt as a descriptor for a continuous map with no obvious load screens. This is a technological solution phrase rather than a game design phrase.

We are heroes. This is what we do!
