i am Chinese,but i can’t support your opinion . it’s not mean i am good at english.
but think about it. you play a game in Chinese server and see other guys input Korean, Japanese, Spanish, English on public channel . Yes, that’s annoying. you totally don’t know what are they talking about. do u remember this idiom "ru xiang sui su“?

Even in US server ,when I saw someone input other language, i felt so bad.

IMO,your request is selfish.

“ru xiang sui su”, means .When in Rome do as the Romans do.
you are not using it in a proper place. to do “the Romans do” is depends on you whether or not to do. not by someone’s force.
I did explain my point before and because you are Chinese too I will explained it again.

1. In eu/us servers, to speak english when team up with multi-language players, is supposed to be players’ personal etiquette, not by gw2’s game setting forcing players into it.
I understand your feeling, people speak spainish, or german or such languages with you when you do wvw or dungeons, but you also need to know, not everyone know how to speak fluent english in gw2. to put you in their shoes, what you gonna feel?
on the other hand, even like now gw2 doesn’t support proper chinese display, if two players decide to use chinese, they still can use english to “spell” chinese, for non-chinese speakers, they will not understand.
on way or another, display chinese input has no relation to the situation you talked about.

2. I played WoW for years, and WoW support multi-language properly, the situation was, I didn’t see people complain about the game being multi-language supporting, the game just work perfectly with multi-language supporting. and as a chinese player, I just use chinese between guild chat and when there is non-chinese player in group I just switch to english. as I said, it it personal etiquette, not by forced.

I am not selfish, just the opposite. personally I can use English without any problem. but considering there are great number of my fellow chinese players can’t explain their ideas thoroughly on forum, I just feel responsible to speak for them. I am helping everyone.

and remember: “when in Rome do as the Romans do”, is supposed to be done by people under his will, not by other’s force

Thanks for your explain. Your original intention is good. and you did well in multi-language environment. but you can’t promise your friends will do well as you did. Because I saw someone chat on public channel in Chinese, when I guest to JQ. That was rude. and what can you do in this situation? Blame them? “cao ni ma ,guan ni niao shi !”(no offence)

I also hope GW2 will totally support Simple/Transitional Chinese. even I hope a Chinese version for US server, then my fellows will not ask stupid questions anymore.

If speaking other language in public chat count “rude” for you, may I say I feel you are rude while speaking English? It’s a common sense that people would prefer to use their own language while chatting, and I don’t know how this would bother you if you see other language in the public chat.

After looking at all the posts, I even feel this is a racial discrimination problem.
And I feel like some people are going to fight for their right!

I personally find this a bad idea, sorry. I mean seriously, how many more language barriers do you want to introduce?

If you don´t know what i mean, try guesting to a high pop euro server and try some new LS stuff. The overflows are crowded with people speaking english, german, french, spanish, portuguese, italian, kroatian, danish, swedish, norse, russian, hungarian and so on.
Seriously, this is not so much of a problem yet, as they all use the same alphabet. But if you introduce the chinese alphabet, you have to introduce the kyrilic and the greek ones as well. And please don´t tell me that this wouldn´t end in a huge mess of pseudo chat box.

Seriously, if you´re a native speaker of chinese, russian, greek or whatever, please use the english alphabet. It does get to confusing otherwise. Especially since the size of the asian letters would have to be different to the latin ones.
And just by the way, i am not a native english speaker as well and i do understand a couple of european languages.

If you are multi-lingual, you should know that introducing more language support doesn’t build up language barriers. It breaks them. Using English alphabet or not, Chinese would not be understood by most western country players. Then what’s the point to make it difficult to read even for Chinese people? If a Chinese player knows English, he or she would like to join the English conversations. But what if he or she doesn’t? All he or she could do is to struggle through the terribly broken Chinese input support currently in game.

And by the way, there IS Chinese input support in game, as well as Japanese. They are just super broken. The feeling using it is like typing English with only 15 letters available. We hope other languages speaking players can have their own languages supported as well. Who they make such a wonderful community are the players from all over the world, isn’kitten

Heck, it wouldn’t surprise me if, once the Chinese version comes out, that becomes the only one they can even connect to. China is not a tolerant, free or friendly place in internet or gaming terms, it just happens to be a very rich and attractive one to invest in.

Not so, chronometria. I know China doesn’t exactly put themselves in a friendly light, but they are very forgiving, and want the world to know about them. They can’t stop the internet. VPNs and proxys are abound here. Putting a pinyin support into the game would be helpful. You can’t read it? Oh well. Big deal, don’t talk to them. It makes it easier for them to talk to each other. Would you say they shouldn’t allow the marks on letters to make Spanish and Italian possible? Saying that any language, despite it’s origin is discrimination against a portion of the player base. They deserve to play on whichever server they like, without the problems of pinyin not having proper support. It’s easy to do, GW1 had it. GW2 should also have it.

???

Even their forums have it. (Sometimes)

Yes it does make it easier for the chinese/taiwanese/japanese/russian/greek people to talk in their own alphabet. And it breaks down the barrier to use those languages more. That´s all true.
It is also true that i don´t understand them, no matter which alphabet they use. But in the end it makes it easier for me (and quite a lot of people) to follow the chat in general, if i don´t have 2/3/4 different sizes of letters in there.
This gets especially obvious if you have your UI size set to smallest possible and use a mid ranged resolution of your screen. In this case the numbers on the TP are already hard to read. Imagine how that would be if you have the chinese alphabet in that size. I think it would be a mess.
But on the other side GW1 had it´s own servers for Chinese/Japanese/Russian and Greek players. Exactly to avoid the problem of having an utter mess in the chat box.
And yes i think Anet should push faster into these regions or actually dedicate more servers to the players of those countries and enable it there.

spanish, danish, german and french all use English characters though.
It does because if a ton of people suddenly start typing in chinese then things like WvW become really really difficult to co-ordinate.

Yes french and german can have that effect on WvW. But on the NA servers I have never seen anyone speak in anything other than English, so I can imagine it getting pretty difficult if players were to start typing in chinese.

Not quite! Latin characters. There are also characters used by Spanish and German at least(not sure about French and Danish) that are not in the English alphabet.

But that is all besides the point. This is a support issue. If they support Chinese in the client then they need to hire support staff who can read Chinese. I am pretty sure Gaile even said something to that effect in one of her posts if anyone feels like searching.

I don’t see what the problem is, tbh. If other foreign languages are allowed, why shouldn’t chinese be? Yes, it could increase the number of people spamming public chats with another language, but people can already do that anyway right now. Just not with chinese. Most foreign players are polite enough to not have massive conversations in another language in public chat, on an english-speaking server. There are those that aren’t, of course, but they’re the minority, not the norm, from what I’ve seen, and I only rarely see people speaking foreign languages on NA servers in GW2.

I get as irritated as the next person when I see a wall of russian/japanese/german/etc on an english-speaking server in public chat, but I don’t see why it’s unreasonable to allow these people to speak their own language in guild/party/whisper chats. If other foreign languages weren’t supported, maybe that would be a valid excuse, but they are. Allowing one more language isn’t going to suddenly cause an influx of constant chinese in public chats.

I understand.

There is a logical reason why Anet hasn’t done this. First off, people need to communicate with each other, and I’ve been in PUGs with a mix of Chinese-speaking and English speaking players. People who only know Chinese have trouble communicating with the English speakers in the dungeons, fractals, and WvW. Communication is critical in these events. When player speak / write in different languages, it can hurt the team’s performance and cause frustration among the serious players. Some angry English speaking players will boot people who don’t speak the language or report the player for botting. There have been a couple times in the game when I’ve had to mediate situations between English speakers and folks who don’t know the language well. There have even been times when I’ve had to warn the Bot Police that players who look like they are botting may be folks who speak another language.

Just so you know, there are many folks in the US who speak Spanish, and this game doesn’t have support for Spanish speakers either. I’ve met many Latin American players on the Tarnished Coast server, and similar situations have cropped up.

I think someone mentioned that China will be getting their own version of the game very soon. It’s just a matter of time when that will happen. Please be patient.

Okay, so if I’m getting it right, this thread is about requesting more character encoding support.
There are some people who oppose this because they believe this will cause communication segregation.
Since those who want to type in chinese now write in pinyin chinese, I don’t see how this is a valid point at all.

So I want to make two questions clear:
Will enforcing players to type in pinyin instead of chinese render you able to understand what they’re saying?
Is there anywhere in the EULA where it states “english only?”.

While it is possible to sort of write in pinyin at the moment in chat, remember that Asian languages also have tones, those tones are included in the pinyin. Not all the tones are supported at the moment. That can create issues, as words are spelled the same, but use different tones to tell the words apart. The pinyin needs to be allowed to turn into Asian characters, or, all the tones need to be supported.

Technically, it isn’t allowed. Each server has exactly one language everyone should be using. It’s just that latin alphabet and basic UTF support can be used for many other languages, and Anet sort of closes their eyes on widespread use of non-english (or non-german, french or spanish, in case of EU dedicated language servers) in the game.

Making other, non-latin alphabet based languages available would require adding something to the game. It might also have other repercussions – for example it might be considered a signal that Anet is allowing the use of those other languages. And if they did so, they’d have to support them (at least they’d need to have people able to read them, in case some chat conversations got reported).

A step from ignoring something and specifically allowing something may seem small, but the distinction is very important.

Which is why most likely there’s currently no support for, for example, cyrillic.

Main problem is not in “other” nations ignorance of good general chat rules. Main problem that people can’t even whisper each other on their native languages. General chat can be done with language filters, to prevent Americans and French having kitten from unidentified letters as they usually do.

It’s okay to use other non-game communications, but when you want to help stranger, that speaks your language, it is becoming language puzzle.

With America being the biggest economic power in the world, everyone must deal with us. Therefore it makes sense to learn our language. Heck, even our dollar is the world standard for which all currencies are based.

I’m an American, but the language of my own people isn’t supported. Cherokee. And I am not asking ANet to add support for it. It would be too complex anyway.

The American servers should not have to support Chinese language when the Chinese will have their own servers and unique version of the game. They’re not ‘entitled’ to any of it, but they are getting it anyway.

Not trying to be rude at all, just saying if you want Chinese, then wait for the Chinese servers and client. I’d rather not see a lot of squiggles that I can’t read coming up in my chat box. Who knows what might be being said? It does create a language barrier. Even SE separated the Japanese, US, and EU servers with FFXIV. In FFXI, we are all thrown onto the same servers and there is a language barrier, even with the auto-translate function.

It’s kind of already in the game, just not working 100%. If that’s the case, ANet should fix it. If that isn’t the case, I’m not sure there are enough people who would need this to warrant the money to put towards it.

And the Chinese who would speak in Chinese characters in map chat would just type the words out more phonetically. Like how imported Japanese games turn names into English letters so that English speaking players can “read” the name of the NPC.

This would be an issue if GW2 ever claimed to support those languages. As far as I know it has never made those claims.

Common, people just want to communicate with PROPER FONT. We don’t need any support.

Russian isn’t Cherokee with it’s 10 400 native speakers lol…, it is native for more than 250 million people. Witch is bigger than German and French brought together. Russian just ended unlike Czech or Polish with different charset type, and basically I don’t think that anybody from the side would understand ether Czech, Polish or Russian written with Latin letters.

But here is the thing, Czech and Polish can communicate properly with each other, when Russians don’t. And they don’t get any support from GW team anyway, and they disturbing chat as Russian players do.

Speak English or die? You know while I know 4 languages and 2 of them is on the level everyday work and life, there is always somebody who know only one language.
