so I’ve been playing GW2 for a few months now, and yet still cant decide what character to use. I took an ele to lvl. 62, but got bored. since then I’ve had various other characters, but none have made me feel like their worth my time. I have a lvl. 26 guard. as my secondary and still get bored. I have tried every class (except engi. because it has limitations that just dont suit me) and haven’t found a good enough fit. if anyone has any ideas on what to do to make the classes more enjoyable I’d appreciate it. I still love the game just get bored with the classes.

Well first what is your playstyle? What do you usually play in mmorpgs?

Once you’re level 80 the game changes quite a bit. It’s really hard to judge a class at lower levels. You might want to check out the gw2 metabattle website there are guides on there as well as videos about how the class is played at 80 with all traits and utilities. I agree though leveling your first time around does get really redundant. But there are lots of classes to try out, and as the guy above asked we might be able to help you figure out a class that fits your play style the best of you go into more detail about that.

I will say ele is one of the most dynamic classes in PvE. It has a lot more weapon skills and the combos it makes are really useful plus it’s utility. I know you said you’re bored with ele but it is different at 80. Thief is also kind of fun dagger dagger is interesting, 5 puts you in stealth which makes your 1 skill change and become more powerful. Plus you have to attack from the side/behind. So the rotation to that is kind of fun although repetitive…. Anyway sorry rambling now. But yeah try to push through to 80 and see how much of a difference it makes.

If you’re getting bored no matter what you play, set goals for yourself for each character you make. Pace yourself, and use a different weapon/weapon set or utility skills when things start feeling stale. In the past, I have had terrible misconceptions about particular professions, simply because I played them with a weapon set that I really didn’t like. When I remade them, and played with a fresh weapon, I fell in love.

This being said, some weapons and builds really improve once you’ve traited for them. For instance, a lowbie burn guardian will feel very slow and useless, but when you’ve got the right traits you’ll feel very powerful.

If it’s the levelling experience that you’re finding dull, make sure you’re mixing things up. Explore, craft, jump into PvP or WvW, do your story. When you’re high enough level, try doing a dungeon- maybe use this as incentive to keep you levelling your current character.

If you’re considering HoT, make sure you take a look at the elite specialisations. Perhaps there is a specialisation there that really takes your fancy, which might factor into your decision?

Make sure you tell us what kind of things you like to play:
-Do you like being supportive, or do you believe the best support you can offer is superior damage?
-Do you like fast-paced action, or to take your time with more calculated kills?
-Do you like to execute perfect rotations, or are you happy with high damage on a few skills?
-Do you prefer the idea of magic or physical attacks?
-Do you like to be face-to-face with the enemy, or standing from a distance?
-Do you like risky play, or to play it safe?

If you are bored, try doing something out of the ordinary. Like for instance, I never thought I’d be using necromancer alot in PvP in GW2, since I rarely used them in GW1 (although they were alright, I just don’t find they fit my playstyle). I was trying out the various job classes in PvP, then when I played necro it suddenly clicked for me. And now thanks to sir Choxie, I’ve been doing a lot of zerg busting in EotM. With all the cliffs in the new borderlands, I’m looking forward to doing some zerg busting in there as well.

You could try Woodenpotatoes permadeath rules, or at least some of the restrictions like no heal, dodge, or armor uprgades

Is there a reason you need to stick with just 1 character?

My main is a ranger, I really enjoy the playstyle and have done for years. But even then I would definitely get bored if that was my only option.

But since GW2 gives you 5 character slots by default and it’s relatively quick and easy to level a character to 80 and kit them out in exotics it’s generally not a problem to have multiple characters.

So you could have an elementalist and a guardian and whichever other professions you’ve enjoyed and then switch between them depending on what you feel like playing at the time.

I may get some flak for this because its very SAO, but I’m a solo player. I never have liked playing with other people because a lot of the time I just want to do my own thing. being in a group from what I’ve seen basically means your trying to accomplish a goal. so many people tend to get mad when you see something off the beaten path that interests you. as for my play style, I really just adapt to the situation or character. but generally I enjoy being tanky while still dealing a good amount of damage. I’ve tried necro but it doesn’t deal enough damage for my liking. I thought guardian might be a good fit, but I soon realized it was too support oriented. for a solo player like me you can see how that’s a problem. warrior is just too stale for me since every rpg ever has the same one. I’m looking to get HoT, but the only specializations the interest me are necro, guard, and mesmer. I really think the necro specialization has potential to fit my play style, but I dont want it to feel like a grind getting there. I mained a druid in WoW if that helps. it was something out of the norm and had alot of fun doing it.

Man those people are really dumb for not using a stunbreaker and/or stability. They deserved getting thrown into the abyss by you for being so carless.

I tend to play only 1 character. I don’t have much free time so I prefer to use it on one char, instead of having a bunch of kitten alts XD

What did you find undesirable about the engi? Sort of interested to know (after going to it I find most other classes I’ve played a little dull).

I found it to be very limited. it can only use a few weapons, and I find the turrets very irritating. its like you have a bunch of minions but none of them move. maybe one day ill try it if I can find a build I can get behind.

It’s EotM. Chances are that there were a good number of PvE players just karma farming without any stunbreaks slotted.

That explains a lot. My first engi had turrets and I hated it. Remade one more recently focusing on grenades, bombs, and mostly flamethrower kits. <3 Engi is actually quite flexible if you’re willing to switch kits around and keep trying different things. Have to say, though, flamethrower rocks. Use kits instead of weapons, switch often and learn some combos. You might find this a lot of fun!

If you’re looking to get HoT, I’d recommend Revenant. They do good damage (now), have heavy armor, and are more on the tanky side of things. Not as boring as warrior, not as support-heavy as guardian. I really enjoyed Necro/Reaper in HoT beta, too.

Enjoy and good luck!

Elemental is very versatile, even warriors are versatile.

Honestly I would say Warrior is your best fit. I know it seems bland because all other games have one. I also refused to pick one up (and went for Guard instead) because of this mind-set. I tried it though and a lot of the weapon kits were really fun. They have the most weapon options in the game so you can switch it up often when you “get bored” of the weapon kit routine currently equip.

Rev would be another great option (when hot hits live) though its very limited in weapon / legend options. But I find it to be great as a tank especially if you pick up the elite spec and put on some cleric gear.

Anyway! Good luck finding your fit!

you know in SOA he had to join a party cus being solo was lonely and not fun, and he couldn’t beat the things he needed to without a party. . . just saying

I’d try them all out in spvp cus you get all the skills without leveling.

Also if you own HoT there are new specializations coming out that change the classes slightly. Druid is the elite for ranger.
