What is the first thing I should do back as a returning player of GW2? The last time I was actually active was back in November 2012.

Maybe hunt through the wiki and look for new stuff.

And leave your sanity at the door if you’re going to become a regular of the forums

Familiarize yourself with the Living Story, because that’s going to be PvE moving forward.

If you’re level 80 – visit the new temporary dungeon today, because tomorrow that content will close.
If you’re not level 80 – you might still want to visit Lion’s Arch and play the mini games associated with Dragon Bash. They’re quite fun
You might also rush trough completing some of the temporary content achievements if you feel like it.
See this game is driven by temporary content mostly and we’re getting new stories every 2 weeks. There’s nothing wrong with missing it, so if you don’t feel like following the current ones, level some alts, see the new Spvp maps, try out fractals if you haven’t already and enjoy the update that will allow you to get bonuses from achievement points tomorrow you might also want to look into WvW. It has upgrade and a reward system now, which is awesome. Also if short on money, you might try to run meta events http://us.gw2stuff.com/ (see the timer here), currently it’s probably the only place of the game with fixed rewards – you’ll get at least 1 guaranteed rare per event per account now.
