One thing I noticed working on a new character is that environmental items (shovel, etc) are such a lost cause. Nobody picks them up and uses them because figuring out a new skill set on the cuff in a fast-paced game isn’t worth the risk/reward.

But I was reminded of Super Adventure Box that uses the items in versatile ways. Wouldn’t it be nice if these items you find on the regular map had special purposes? Like somewhere to dig with a shovel, a place you could drop a plank, somebody who wants a rum, etc. To me that would be really entertaining to complete all the those kind of item-given-a-purpose tasks on a map and there could be a surprise or two thrown in.

I’m for any reason to give enviro weps a purpose. Why on earth would I pick up a plank of wood over my traited sword? Some are ok, like boulders, which are fun to open with.

I don’t ever want to see environmental weapons, and most certainly not in dungeons. They are mostly just a cheap gimmick to extend the duration of the fight. The ghost eater in AC comes to mind.

My posts are facts as I know them, or my own opinion, and do not represent any guild.

Some are ok, like boulders, which are fun to open with.

Especially if you’re an elementalist. I’d consider that a small environmental weapon secret. A few more like that couldn’t hurt.

Sadly, the flaming boulder trick is the only environmental weapon that I’ve ever seen present different options to different users. More stuff like that would be cool.

I pick up every unexploded mortar shell I can find in CS. Who doesn’t like 10k AoE?

I’d make collectibles out of them with a new slot (like the utility slots). Once you’ve found one it is unlocked (similar to Ranger pets) and from now on you can switch them in and out (like Engineers kits) whenever you like. There should be a cooldown instead the weapon braking. This would bring

  • more utility in the PvE game
  • a collectible mini-game
  • now there could be those puzzles the OP is talking about, because you can take the environmental weapon to any places in the PvE-world instead of only in that area where you’ve found those.

I’d also suggest, to make this new slot an unlockable once you’ve done a very huge challenge.

I hate when there are environmental weapons scattered about and I am flying around some event with a ton of mobs so I’m quick looting with ‘F’ as I run buy and accidentally pick up a plank or other nonsense and don’t notice it at first. LOL

Re: Environmental weapons are useless

Broken bottles exist solely to troll you by sharing the general interact command. On the flipside, take a necromancer Terror build then pick up a skull lying on the ground.

Mixing insults with your post is like pooping in a salad.
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.

I love environmental weapons – it’s fun to just run around and pick up a random new power for a bit. My biggest problem with em is that they can drop so fast you don’t get a chance to try them out. If I’m not right on top of a mob the weapon will just fall out of my hand before I can find one a good 90% of the time. The duration needs to be longer. (and since you can swap them out for your normal weapon with the Tild key at any time, there’s not much reason for them to drop so fast)

This is a great idea, all of it. I love enviro weapons. Snowballs on the bears in Wayfarer can be a bit of fun. Actually, that’s all these weapons are.

The interact is a pain in the kitten though.

If environmental weapons:

- Could create combo fields;
- Could create combo finishers;
- Could give boons;
- Be collectible;

I would certainly use them often. As they are now, they are just useless and annoying when doing some events as someone as already stated.

I quite like the idea of the environmental weapons, however they indeed could use some more… handiness.
Personally I love the chomp of meat you can take of a spit to whack mobs with, and eat it if your health gets low, but it would be great if it had some more options. Why not make 5 skills for each weapon with some things that can come in handy? As said earlier, knockbacks, boons, combo fields/finishers…

This is a bit off topic, but some items could have effect with ambient creatures as well. I’d love to attract little critters with an envrio item i’d use as a bait, to an enemy.
Or maybe, like, catch a rabbit, take a bite, throw its guts in the hands of a foe, so it fumbles for X seconds…

Just another example. Throwing karka eggs back at the karka queen? Why?

My weapon set just isn’t good enough?
