Good luck.
Just learn English.
Its one of the easier languages to learn and it might actually help you career wise.

English is far from the easiest language to learn, so much so that 3 different countries use it wide spread and use different words. Half the rules are ignored as with some of the letters.
Or just annex a country that speaks english.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
this game already has translations for different languages, wouldn’t kill to have an extra one for russians.
For the language barriers, one russian only guild will solve it between players. I personally know a lot of people that doesn’t understand anything about english and play this game just fine.

And then another for Swedish, Italian, Dutch, Hindi, Japanese, Swahili and so on. If they start adding one language they should also be adding the rest as well, and that means they would basically have to hire 150 new people just to handle translating and such.

They would have to hire people who can translate Russian to deal with tickets. Not to mention having to have someone translate that actual game itself for now and the rest of the game’s life. And that can be costly. And they may not figure enough people who only speak Russian fluently and not any of the other supported languages is enough to recoup the costs.

Actually, it’s really expensive to do translations. You have to get a translation for every single item, dialogue, text on items, skill, system message, etc. Then you have to make sure that the translation appears correctly on screen, that there are no typos, that the grammar fits, etc. There’s QA work, too. And then, once it’s all done, there are bugs and error reports and changes to the game, so you have to keep it up.
In short, it’s fairly expensive to provide any additional translations for a game this size, both in terms of one-time and ongoing costs.
Then there’s the issue of which language should be translated first. Your language? Or the one that has more players? Or the one that would get more new players?
And let’s not forget the actual policy in Russia toward homosexuality… I mean we have a lesbian couple as main characters and we could consider the entire sylvari race as bisexual…

That is a good point. The game would probably be banned in Russia as “Homosexual Propaganda.” They have very draconian anti-gay laws there.

I think he means that it might lead to the game getting banned, shunned, frowned upon and/or getting special age limits. It wouldn’t be the first time, if you look at the Sims 4, for an example, which got a 18+ rating due to possible homosexual content (even though you don’t see anything happening except the jumping in bed). (not saying that Russia is alone in this)

That’s precisely what i meant… It is technically against the law to be homosexual in Russia so one might assume that the game would be banned….

It is NOT against the law to be homosexual in Russia. The law that people refer to bans “homosexual propaganda” from being advertised in public places, such as posters or billboards. Another interesting fact is that nobody has as of yet been convicted of breaking this law.
Please educate yourself before making outrageous claims on subjects you know nothing about, lest you be seen as a brainwashed mouthpiece for whatever tabloid you read. Good day.

I don’t think you can really say that in this case – politics itself intrudes upon the game. At least as regards the OP’s original post. The laws in Russia would make large parts of the story and the portrayal of multiple characters illegal – i.e. the game in it’s current form would be almost certainly banned. Advertising the game would be ‘promoting’.

Unfortunately, the law is then used, as we have seen numerous cases, as a pretext to be excessive – that’s exactly why they were enacted in the first place of course, under the guise of “protecting children and society”, etc.
Game companies that have gay/bi/Transgender characters don’t bother trying because they are aware of Russia’s draconian laws that would be illegal in the western world.

Please list some of these “numerous cases” in which this law was used in Russia. The wikipedia article about it lists but a single example involving a 100$ fine to a group of adults picketing a children’s library. Hardly the “excessive” enforcement that you are claiming.

As I have previously said game companies don’t bother because they know if their game contains gay/bi/Transgender characters it might be banned so why waste money.
I find in shocking that players are actually defending these Russian " homosexual propaganda" laws. These laws do nothing but discriminate against a very large group of people. I am just glad I live in the USA and in a state where gay marriage is legal.

Sorry but that doesn’t cut it. Your claim that “game companies don’t bother” is completely unfounded, as you cannot even give one example.
If that’s too hard for you to handle can you find an example of a company that was considering expanding into russia then changed their minds upon the implementation of this “draconian” law that has yet to send even a single person into prison?
Oh wait, you can’t. Because you based your entire claim on sensationalized headlines in tabloids, and haven’t bothered doing your own research like an adult.

First of all, homosexual propaganda doesn’t exist… As homosexuality is not something you can buy, trade or acquire by any other means… Homosexuality is a fact, it exists… And as such is not advertised, it is simply showed. If you have a poster in a street with 2 men kissing, this is not a propaganda telling all men to kiss each other, this is a picture showing that some men like to kiss each other…
This “homosexual progaganda” is just a scapegoat and a way to mask the “homosexual reality is not permitted in russia.” law.
Can a gay couple kiss in public in russia? No
Can a gay couple walk holding hands in public in russia? No
Both situations can be seen as “homosexual propaganda”….
I know for sure that a Ramstein concert was interrupted and canceled in russia because they simulate gay sex on stage.
And second, even if no one has been convicted for breaking this law, the law is still there discriminating… And by the way has anyone been convicted by fisical or verbal aggression towards homosexual people? No? Well that makes me think that homophobia is not against the law in russia… So basically we get to the same point… IT IS against the law to be homosexual in russia…
I consider myself very educated on the subject, thank you very much…

You are clearly under some sort of delusian that homosexuality is illegal. It is not. There is no law forbidding homosexuality.
Also, do you know how many archaic and discriminatory laws are still on the books in many other countries in the world, including the states, and are not enforced?
The situations that you stated do NOT actually fall under “homosexual propaganda” believe it or not.
And you clearly are not in any way “educated” on this subject as the falsehoods you’ve claimed are taken directly out of the yellow press and not substantiated by facts.

Making loud and obnoxious claims may seem like a good way to make a point, but I assure you it is not. You would be much better received if you submitted factual arguments to the discourse.
Getting back to the topic of the thread, we also have to include the cost of voice acting for any translation of the game.
I’m sure that ANet put plenty of thought into what languages to translate the game into before it ever went live. What ones would be cost effective, which ones would not? The list they decided is the list they’re going to stand by, more or less.
Yes, it’s been translated for China as well, but that was a HUGE marketing leap for the game, and they had another company in China to work with for it. I doubt that they’d be able to pull the same kind of deal with a Russian company and expect it to be profitable, there’s just not enough players there to support it.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

At best Guild Wars 2 would be called an “adult only” game, at worst it would be banned and Anet would be sued for Gay Propaganda.
Probably cost prohibitive for Anet/NcSoft to do a Russian version upfront and backend, unlike with China having a much more larger population/player base than Russia thus the Chinese version will pay off.
As for the rest of you guys here look up banned, movies, books, video games etc and you find a long list of countries that have banned things for all sort of things. Anet/NcSoft would NOT put in panda bears that could be killed in GW1 Factions expansion because it would kitten off Chinese Government and people, so Anet made panda bear minis instead.

yes, but the problem is that gay relationships are already in the game. So they would either have to release a separate censored version (which they probably view as not worth it, the only reason anyone censors undead for China is because it’s such a huge market, that censoring your game is worth it) or not release at all.

Well the law forbids that any kind of information on homosexuality is given to under-18 people… This can be used in many ways… One can assume that having a public interaction is a form of information…
Can a gay couple kiss in public in russia? No, if there is a chance someone under 18 is seeing.

The huffington post article cites “http://www.gazeta.ru/social/2013/07/22/5492557.shtml” as its source, but fails to mention something the original article does: the tourists were never convicted, let alone put on trial. In fact, the police didn’t even submit the results of their investigation to the court. So no, this does not qualify as a conviction, nor were the tourists “jailed” as the Huffington Post so loudly claims in its title.
Your second link outlines an event that occured two years ago. According the article, the young man responsible was “arrested” by his own parents and a nearby officer, then immediately set free. No charges were filed against the young man, and he hasn’t stood trial for this act. Note that this was two years ago.
Another interesting fact from the article was the actions of the very same LGBT activist that initially defended the young man.
“On 17 August he tweeted: “Western media has no respect for Russia and its people and LGBT population included. What they report about Sochi and gay propaganda is sham.”
“All Western media want to hear from me that Russia is kitten and I don’t want to take part in this hypocrisy. So all interviews are over!” "
^ Note that this is the man who promised full legal support to the youth, and a prominent LGBT activist. Funny how even the homosexual community in Russia thinks that western reporting of the law is bullcrap.
As for your final link, it is true that the videogame received a higher age rating than it did in the states. So what? In Australia they BAN games with sexual content, such as the Witcher 2 and Saints Row 4, whereas here, a game was still available, but sold only to mature consumers. This is as much “discrimination” against gays as the Australians are “discriminating” against sexually active adults.

does Guild Wars 2 have gay relationships? Yes.
is significant amount of population that plays games underaged? Yes.
would it cost a lot to translate everything and keep support up in Russian while releasing for a limited amount of population as it is? Yes.

homosexuality not only doesn’t play a part in that game, but it’s certainly not a part of the main story.
this game already has translations for different languages, wouldn’t kill to have an extra one for russians.
And then another for Swedish, Italian, Dutch, Hindi, Japanese, Swahili and so on. If they start adding one language they should also be adding the rest as well, and that means they would basically have to hire 150 new people just to handle translating and such.
Great, then Swedes would just start demanding English games because there are probably more Swedish people that talk English than there are Swedish people that talk Swedish.
Tbh I dont really know why Anet hasnt made a Russian version (failing a full Russian version, at least the language option). Plenty of games that have that region specifically. Maybe they just didnt find a publisher for it.

(not saying that Russia is alone in this)
Politics irl have no place in GW2. Agreed mod?
I don’t think you can really say that in this case – politics itself intrudes upon the game. At least as regards the OP’s original post. The laws in Russia would make large parts of the story and the portrayal of multiple characters illegal – i.e. the game in it’s current form would be almost certainly banned. Advertising the game would be ‘promoting’.
Please give me one example of a game that has been banned in russia due to “homosexual propaganda”
Please explain the purpose of this law.
Your argument so far has essentially been: “Well, yes, of course there are discriminatory laws on the books. But since the judicial system and police are so nice and tolerant, they haven’t actually used them to their full extent. So everything’s ok!”
Protip: this is a bad argument.
Maybe they just didnt find a publisher for it.

releasing in Hindi might be more profitable than releasing in Russian even.
And let’s not forget the actual policy in Russia toward homosexuality… I mean we have a lesbian couple as main characters and we could consider the entire sylvari race as bisexual…

Did I ever claim that “everything’s ok” or that I agree with the law? No, I was simply pointing out that OP’s prediction that a gw2 localization would be deemed “illegal” is highly improbable to say the least. The rest of my posts have been to educate people making outrageous claims about the legality of homosexuality in russia.
Protip: Your straw man is a logical fallacy. If you don’t know what that is, google is your friend :^)

OMG. From where this discussion ended up, you probably shouldn’t have mention Hindi.

It’s not a straw man if it accurately summarises what you said.
In any case, since you agree the law could be acted upon at any time, why would any company invest a lot of money into doing something that could get them prosecuted? It’s simply not worth the risk that the Russian government/courts/police will simply turn around and start using the law as it was intended.
this game already has translations for different languages, wouldn’t kill to have an extra one for russians.
And then another for Swedish, Italian, Dutch, Hindi, Japanese, Swahili and so on. If they start adding one language they should also be adding the rest as well, and that means they would basically have to hire 150 new people just to handle translating and such.
developers should create a language API, that makes it easier for players to create their own Language mods.
Well, if they are going to try to basically make 3 different versions serve the entire globe.
They could always put the whole game in new Krytan and require people to learn that.
ANet may give it to you.
