so many people with map completion
Well, I can finish a zone every hour, so it wouldn’t really be that much.
However, after 400ish hours playing, I’m still at 75%

I`d say expect to spend 100+ hours on a character to get completion. More if you`re doing dungeons or other non-exploration activities much.
For me, each of my 3 80s had about 45% when they hit max level. Only one has 100%. I`ve played ~700 hours, though maybe 1/3 of that was chatting with my guild while studying.
Considering you can get over 50% just by leveling to 80 (probably 60-70%+ if you don’t do events but just map completion), map completion doesn’t really take long.
It’s not terribly difficult, it just takes a bit of time. As far as WvW, just keep an eye on the colours and try to make opportunity calls.

Agree, I was completing each area fully as I was levelling my first char to 80, I got up to about 92% before I needed to explore the WvW areas and once those were done that got me to 100%.
Piken Square Server The Axis of Evil [AXE] Guild Leader (and NO 1986 is NOT my birthdate!!!!!)
I don’t have all exotics and sigils on my main yet, and I have been playing since headstart. I do, however, have map completion at 94-ish%, and my alt is at 50-ish %. I only need Diessa Plateau and a few WvW points.
It’s a matter of preference, I guess. I love exploring, so that’s what I fill my game time with, but I hate grinding or farming or whatever you want to call it, so I don’t have my gear complete yet.
Spent about 300 hours on my ranger doing map completion while leveling (completed after 80) so it’s not difficult, just time consuming.
I am anti-censorship, for it doesn’t make sense to pander to a minority.
With my elementalist it took me about 45 minutes per zone and every zone was about 3%, two good weekends of playing and I went from 34% when I hit 80 to finished.

I got 700 hours in and I played in all the betas, most of my time is event farming and crafting but my necro has 100%, was 93% for several months until last weekend when my server finally had control over all of the mists before reset so I decided to cap all the points. Didn’t get the JP’s done but those can wait. So I just recently got my 100% though I could have took a more proactive approach to wvw it isn’t really my thing.
I have not even started on my legendary and if I do, the map completion will be the last thing i do. I dont wanna ruin the experience for alts, i wanna keep some untouched zones for them
It’s not too hard, in my opinion. I don’t have it yet, but I finished all of wvw yesterday and I feel so much better. Other zones shouldn’t be that hard.
Been playing since game launch, and when my ranger was lvl 20-something, I decided to begin collecting all the ranger pets.
This began a big world tour, and really enjoyed it. I leveled quickly to 80 from all the exp, earned lots of karma and gold even before entering the Orr maps. Was able to afford a full set of exotic armour and 2 exotic weapons when I hit 80.
After finishing all the PvE maps, I started doing dungeons, got 3 sets of end-game armour, etc. Then, for completion sake, began mapping in wvw over the xmas holidays. I finished this around 2-3 weeks ago.
Just very recently I began my first alt (a guardian) and re-discovering map exploration, but my goals are somewhat different. I first cleared 2 of the maps where the personal story took me, and the starter cities and LA. Currently about to finish the 3rd PS map in the Shiverpeaks. Next, I will discover the dungeon entrance wp’s for as many as I can, then gradually complete those maps as well. 100% world is not a priority for my alt, but will probably get there at some point
I think it’s a matter of how much boredom you are willing to go through to get it done. I personally don’t see any point in doing map completion.

Nah, it’s a matter of what you see as boredom :‘)
I really hate doing a dungeon path more than once in my lifetime, but I can’t get enough of exploring.
To each his/her own.
I have 3 chars with 100% world complete and am working on my forth now. It’s not hard really, I just have a daily goal of clearing one map and over time they all get done.
I have the maps so down now I can do one within 2-4 hours depending on the map, some are faster than others to do.
It’s a matter a priority. Just complete maps instead of running dungeons of farming.
It’s that simple.
Not really dude you just do the zones. Just focus on it instead of dungeon running.
really bad engineer

I had all zones completed (except WvW) soon after hitting 80. I stayed at 92% for ages because I didn’t want to do WvW. Ended up finishing WvW in about a week of on/off play.
Once you enter a zone to level/explore just don’t leave until the zone is complete. Yes, it takes time but you get completion rewards which help you level faster. By doing this you’ll also often be over-leveled for your personal story, which makes that easier to plow through as well. Heck, I never even did a dungeon until I was done with PvE mapping.

I’ve done a fair amount, but it’s spread between alts with no one over about 60%. I have a hard time working up the motivation to re-do some of the zones I find particularly tedious (e.g. Fireheart Rise).
It took my 3 days playing hard.
People doing zones in 45 min -1 hour are teleport hacking. There’s ~20 hearts per zone there’s there’s no way you’re averaging 3 mins per heart + travel time and getting all the vistas and out of the way POI’s.
Or maybe it’s just the standard kitten waving on the forums.
When I got my map completion, I decided that that was all I was going to focus on and skipped out on wvw (other than for world completion) and dungeons. After naturally leveling to 80, it probably took 2 weeks of casually playing after work with more playtime on weekends
If you stop playing fractals and do focus on exploration, then maybe…
I agree that anyone claiming to do it in under an hour is cheating. The quickest that you can complete a map is about 2 hours if you’re already level 80 and/or have a group that works efficiently.
The average is 3 hours if doing it while trying to get 80.
and its more than 3 hour if you don t rush, do jumping puzzles, and talk to npc, and etc.
the size of the world isnt a problem. i really think that if somebody plays the game at a regular speed, does all the content only once (never repeat any event/dungeon) and do 100%.
hes in it for at least a solid 300-400h of pve.
which is by itself… amazing for a cpu game!
Took me maybe 2 weeks from release to get 80, then I spent the next week pretty much only going to zones I hadn’t done and finishing them.
Took me about 2 week of casual play to do the PvE maps.
Took me 5 minutes to switch servers to Kaineng for the full WvW map in less than a day (only died 4 times).
Now waiting to switch back.
Took me maybe 2 weeks from release to get 80, then I spent the next week pretty much only going to zones I hadn’t done and finishing them.
hahahahahaha
They skip all the events in between and just tick the checklist running from A to B as quickly as possible…..that’s why you see 100% maps completionists in the first week of launch, they skipped almost 90% of the game content. Alot of players do not hang around the maps they just burn through the checklist.
I have not been focusing on completing it, just playing the game, fractals, dungeons, sometimes do some jumping puzzles and exploration WvW.
Im on about 70% map completion with over 1100 hours on my main character.
When I do a map this is what I do.
1. Spend 1-2 days on that map as a minimum
2. Find and complete every single dynamic event on that map and dynamic event chain
3. I follow every single npc and read / listen to all voice dialogue and text
4. Explore all the off the map stuff, hidden events and jumping puzzle
5. Double check iv done every single little thing, found every single hidden thing and then move onto the next map and do the same thing again.
Its a very slow way of doing it but im a completionist and want to experience every single part of the game.
Also I have found quite a few hidden cool things that some did not seem to know about because they do not follow the npc’s or read or listen to the dialogue like hidden merchants that only appear after a hidden event chain, hidden lore, hidden dynamic boss events that are not on the map, hidden guild wars 1 stuff.
There is so much more to this game than just getting 100% map completion as quickly as possible and just skipping all the events and content…
Not saying everyone has done this, just saying alot of players have. I do admit the way I play is extremely slow way of map completion, but that is not my entire goal. I want to see all of the game has to offer, not just run through a checklist like a drone running from A to B.
Some of the hidden dialogue and hidden events are pretty funny too with some good npc characters and banter, some of the hidden merchants give specific usefull items you can not get anywhere else in the game, and some of the events have older gw1 npc’s in them with gw1 lore.
Is really worth bothering to do every single event in an area and then stay in that area for a few days to see how the events trigger, how the events chain off and on and what happens to the npc’s after every single event.
Get alot more exploration out of the game that way instead of burning to get 100% of map.

This. I’m working toward an 80 of each class so I really don’t want to see/do everything right away. If you’re on your first character I’d urge you to reconsider making 100% world completion your first goal, you might just ruin the experience for yourself.
started this game since it came out.. I dont even have any alts. Sure i have ascended gear and max exotic gear with all their sigils and runes. But Im still at 65% :/. Is there a secret? Or do people just have a lot of time on their hands. (dont get me started on the people who have 5 or more legendaries already)
You just have to focus on it.
I’ve done it twice.
It isn’t really a big deal. If you want it done, you’ll complete it.
Just knock out one area and be done with it for the day, then do another next time etc. It only seems bad when you spend hours and hours doing zone after zone.
The only parts that are “hard” are the WvW maps because unless your server is winning, you’re not getting most of the stuff.
Its kinda stupid that they are included in this, really.
Do you even lift, bro?
its actually nice that the game can almost be played the way you want.
so many different kind of gamer can enjoy it and ditch many hours in their favorite activities.
@TRON,
Being of a similar bent, I tend to agree with you. My goal was the map completion rewards and the Bluestone achievements for each area.
The problem with many DE’s and DE chains is that they are often bugged, they don’t fire or work properly. So, you never know if or when there should be a DE or a DE chain. It is not a matter of spending days in a map, you need to be in a map right after a server reset and hope everything works as it should.
For JP’s, I need to be in the right mood for them, then do a bunch in a row.
Definitely a matter of priority. I have 7 80’s and highest map completion is 36%. I’ve played every race and every profession at least to the 40’s or so. The 80’s are now in full exotics and I’ve picked one to complete the map on. My goal is to make it fun.
Took me maybe 2 weeks from release to get 80, then I spent the next week pretty much only going to zones I hadn’t done and finishing them.
hahahahahaha
I don’t get it..?

i’m laughing cause im in disbelief.
or we simply didnt play the game the same way.
I gave up on map completion after kitten-ing around in WvW my first month. Hated the experience so much I just wrote off the achievement. I’ll settle for my characters hitting the brick wall at 95-ish%. I know I’ve played enough to have earned the achievement, despite ArenaNet refusing to give it to me for spurning their PvP content.
Stupid and irritating how they force PvE and PvP together for stuff like that. They are different games and I only bought one of them when I bought GW2. “Play the game the way you want to play it”, my kitten

Me neither. I did the same thing as you with my first 80.
@blacklight
dude…
aside from a “legendary” item it doesnt matter if you are stuck at 95 or have 100.
you enjoyed the content you saw?
thats all that matters really.
really, kitten those legendaries anyway

probably not as i hit level 80 after 150h. (lot more than 2 weeks…)
im 300h in and only 50% map complete.

You realize that isn’t the case at all?
It means that if you enjoy WvW you are forced to do PvE, and if you enjoy PvE you are forced to do WvW? You can’t just do one and get 100%.
Its the total opposite of what you described.
Do you even lift, bro?
I do about 25% of a map per evening, every often one map per day. I hit 80 with 31% complete playing whatever happened in front of me while clearing maps. I have all the cities still to do as well, which it seems that is a good chunk. Now I’m around 65% complete, started playing in Nov. (I have two alts 50 and 30 as well, doing maps in full)
Point is, there is going to be a lot of variance from player to player with how long will it take, just in this post it’s already really varied. To me the game world is plenty large and looking at the map there is a lot of room for expansion yet.
I’ll find a zone I haven’t completed, look around to help someone, and before I know it that area is cleared.
It doesn’t take too long for me.

Your answer is if you base it on map completion, you don’t have to do that to play and enjoy GW2.
maybe im a bit of a slow poke.
i wait and smell the roses..
talk to npcs check the character model and the decor etc.

you dont “need” 100%…
there is no end, so you set your own goal.
not all goals have the same requirement, but hey, there is enough for everybody.

That makes a lot of sense. And so does everyone else. I only have about 500-600 hours in and considering i do a lot of dungeons i can see how now reading everyones comments
