hi,

i’ve been playing guildwars 2 ever since the betas. i’ve enjoyed the game most of the time with ups and downs here and there depending on some decisions made. however, there was always one issue i had: where are the guildwars in Guildwars? :p
at launch i thought it was a feature that would surely be added later on. it’s two years later now and that got me thinking, are we ever going to see them? it’s quite ironic that a game wouldn’t feature something it’s named after.
i’m not trying to troll or something, it’s just something i’ve been concerned about. i know of a lot of people that have left the game because of the lack of any guild versus guild activities. i know you can defend a keep in WvW to wave a flag and stuff, you could organize a good 5 man team for sPvP and so on, but none of that carries your guilds name permanently or even at all. there are no leaderboards between guilds, there is nothing you can build up and be proud of. outside of your own guild, there is no real guildinteraction. there is a lack of ‘competition’ between guilds. you could try all your best with your guild in WvW maps to get your server on top of the lists, but that doesn’t really speak of the work your guild has put into it. people might read ‘oh seafarer’s rest is the best server again’ but no one will know any playernames or have respect for any guilds (outside of that servers closeknit groups that work together for their WvW status).

so this is mostly a suggestion to the developers and also a worthy discussion between players. could we please get features where we could work for as a guild that shines to the outer world (not like guildmissions where the prestige is mostly contained in the guild). first and foremost i’m thinking about interguild pvp with leaderboards and everything. how would you like to see it implemented?

I made a post about a thread like this a long time ago. I’ll repost part of it to try and clarify things, again.

The term “Guild Wars” is based on the wars between "Ascalon’ and “Kryta” and the guilds that fought for either side before GW1 in the timeline. In GW1 those “wars” are 50 years done or so. So all the guild vs guild things in GW1 were more to honor the guilds that came before. GW1 was fond of “honoring” old memories. In GW2, which is 250 years after, much of the old things from GW1 are dead, both literally and figuratively. Ascalon fell, Orr has come back (It was gone in GW1 because of the wars that had occurred between Kryta and Ascalon) infested with dead things and the main threat comes from 6 dragons. Elona is now under the control of Palawa Joko (An undead lich/mummy thing) and Cantha is now being controlled by a tyrannical emperor with some serious xenophobic issues.

So as the game stands now its more “Us” vs “The dragons”. There are some other groups out there that stand in the way, such as the Flame Legion, Nightmare Court, and possibly the dredge (debatable here), but there are no outright “Guild vs Guild” things going on at the time. Again this title is just a “In memory of…” reference to the first Guild Wars that came before GW1 lore wise.

i understand what you’re saying. lorewise there is indeed no real reason (yet) for guilds to be at each others throats. i just made the ‘guildwars’ reference because it seemed a bit funny.
however, this does not really adress the issue that a lot of people are demotivated to play because there isn’t much to build up and be proud of for your guild. people like an incentive that makes them work together as a guild. you can’t really ‘beat’ another guild and get renown in the community for it.
even from a marketing standpoint, this lack of overal competition is bad. there’s no real talk about “hey did you the match between guild X and guild Y on the twitch livestream yesterday? there were such high stakes and man what a finale it was!” the community can’t focus around a championship or fame which keeps them invested in the game. such an investment is the very reason people still play games like lineage 2 all those years after it released.
at first i thought WvW would fill this gap. but it’s just not living up to the expectations.

i think a feature like this would be a great benefit to guildwars 2

The Guilds fought for the 6 Gods. Now that they have left and the Dragons have re-emerged, it is a battle against them.

Please ACTUALLY do some lore research before asking a ridiculous question like this.

This is the unfortunate truth. Anet wants to tell the story of dragons and Destiny’s Edge V2. There’s no room for wars between guilds anymore. The only way for this story to make sense is for everyone to unite against their common foes: dragons.

They could introduce guild wars (and real GvG) through an expansion into Cantha or Elona in which it is our job to stop two or more warring guilds (Kurzick guilds vs Luxon guilds, Kourna vs Istan, etc) and convince them to unite against a dragon. But that would be way too awesome for LS2… I have a feeling we won’t get anything that cool for at least 2 or 3 more years… If ever.

It’s a legit question. The title of the franchise doesn’t really connect that well with the gameplay honestly. The lore goes out of it’s way to make an explanation which is really only acceptable in the case of GW1. GW2 is so far removed from the idea of warring guilds that the title almost makes no sense. It should have been called Dragon Wars.

Edit: Imagine if they would have named it Star Wars Episode 2, but it takes place in 1920’s Earth and is a story about gangsters and prohibition. Confusing, right?

i know it’s not in the lore. this is not a lore discussion but a feature discussion. they can make any lore around it, if they include such a feature in the game.

please ACTUALLY read the whole thread before replying. thank you!

The funny thing is that you got it wrong.

The Guild Wars (there were three) was of the guilds of the three human Tyrian nations fighting for control and power, instigated by the Bloodstones eruption from Abaddon’s Mouth into the world, and for the political and military control. The gods (then Five to their knowledge) had nothing to do with the Guild Wars actually, and they ended in 1070 AE, the year the Prophecies game began, having ended with the Searing and the Charr Invasion.

It ended over a century before the first noticed-by-common-folk Elder Dragon, Jormag, awoke.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Kurzicks and Luxons are gone. Absorbed by the canthan empire by force. Kourna and Istan also fell by way of Palawa Joko finally succeeding in his domination of Elona. The sunspears kinda fell into complete ruin or turned. From the wiki,

“In time Palawa Joko gathered his strength and all but wiped out the Order of the Sunspears, scattering them throughout the land as he systematically conquered the continent they swore to protect. All that remains of the Order are half-forgotten legends and wandering mystics who cling to the Sunspear’s code while constantly witnessing the results of their failure.

Many of the Sunspears swore allegiance to Joko after his rise to power in exchange for wealth and prestige. These traitors and those of their brethren who were raised into undeath now form part of the Mordant Crescent, who still hunt those who would attempt to uphold the oaths of the Sunspears."

They would need to introduce new factions if they were to do anything like this. The only way we would get GvG is through non cannon/alternate mist dimension demand by the player base for player/guild housing.
