the reality of the balance patch
I can definitely see an increase in viability for mesmers – not as support, but as a dps class. I’ve been furious at how little damage the mesmer actually does, but they fixed a lot of it’s problems in this patch. What you’re saying makes me think that you don’t play mesmer as a main.
-They’re most definitely still viable in fractals.
-They will still be sought after in raids because they can tank and provide enough boons.
-They’re still viable in WvW. Every class is viable in this game mode where you run around in a massive zerg.
As a revenant, I do think they basically killed off a significant portion of what the class had to offer. Maybe Anet didn’t intend the class to be a boon-hoarder shrug. I’m not too happy with the changes they made to this class, but we’ll see where it goes from here.
I can’t speak for necros, as I’ve never played one.
Lotta skills, traits, utilities, and such need some major changes, location moves, redesigns, fixes, etc but they just did general number shaving. Not a very exciting balance patch overall.

Which is kinda sad really. They’re killing the one true support class in the game, and for what?
They easily could’ve added a dps elite spec that is on par with other dps classes come next expansion and left chronomancer alone as a pure, great support spec for those of us who enjoy that more than “MAX DEEPZ”. Instead of neutering it.

true fractals they still work but ur still take a necro over it and raids its more iffy but i do agree people will probs force themself to run 2 of them just becz their will be no other way to get the quickness becz guards just dont pump out enough. wvw tho (in gvg) i think ur see a little less play with them as u can no longer play the cheese rev mes perma quickness set up. i think all in all i feel sorry for necro and rev but mainly rev as i see nowhere for them anymore

agreed thats why i like playing my druid in raids over my ele sometimes becz its nice to just be the supporter and not worry about DEEEEEEPPPZZ. but ill say this the damage now for mes still isnt that great thief or ele still out performs it and the fact to get good boon duration u now have piano rotations and have to run full commanders

I agree. I did thoroughly enjoy the support that mesmers brought to the table, but it’s kind of pointless post-patch.
Well i think Anet did something wrong with this game . Here’s my ideal for them :
+ In PVE , if a class is over power ( OP ) instead of nerf they should buff other class so it will give people multi choice in PVE . " Nerf " always make people feel bad but if they buff other class , more people will happy . Does the mobs , boss … feel bad if you can kill them a little bit easier or faster ?
+ In PVP and WvW they can balance whatever they want . I never complain about the change in PVP and WvW .
TL,DR : Separate PVE and PvP , WvW .

You need to replace viable with optimal….Stop getting the two confused.
The professions in specific comps wont be optimal, but are still viable.
All that said yes, this balance patch (if one can even call it that) is a joke. All it did was confirm my long thought belief that balance was the name of the nerf-stick anet is using.
Call me jaded, cynical whatever but the previous meta sans WvW (which will always be an impossible task to balance due to numbers) was the most healthy meta most gamemodes had seen. Sure some classes were under-performing but that is no cause for sweeping nerfs to how the game functions as a whole.
end result Revenant viability
- pvp hurt but how badly a new season will tell
- wvw not viable other classes do the job better
Ummm………..ya how about you bring ur nose out of the textbooks and actually watch others play them in those modes. They are still ridiculously powerful due in main part to their ridiculous utility and abilities. They don’t do things THEBEST…..but they do THEMOST things and they do them ALL well….utility keeps them viable, it always has.
You are looking at some of these things from the wrong perspective IMO. You aren’t properly quantifying affinity or dodges or other utility options. You are just looking at nerfed stat values and saying that because its even lower than it was before, they were borderline before, that now we are below the threshold they are no longer viable for anything. And this is the wrong way to look at it.

I definitely agree. The meta for PvE was in a good spot, there were tons of solid build choices which while not necessarily being optimal were still doing well enough to be picked regardless and it would’ve been easy enough to expand on. Instead, they decided to trash everything, gutting diversity in the process. Gonna be a few really unfun months, hopefully they’ll fix this mess in the next patch as I’m assuming they’d prefer to see how this plays out now and are not going to make any major changes, even though it would be necessary.

Simple – because the game doesn’t want a “True support class”, at least not one that stands so far above the others that they are labeled “The one true support class”. By crippling the Mesmer’s domination of the support roles, they allow other classes to be sought for support viability, and allow Mesmers to be sought and played in less support-oriented roles.
My biggest problem with Anet’s balance changes is that it’s tied to the PvP season. If they goof up balance, we’re stuck with it for far, far too long, and when Balance Patch time rolls around, we get stuck with either class-breaking changes or underwhelming shaves/boosts, and stuck with them for far, far too long. I wish they’d just iterate small changes to balance every patch.
actually i have played all classes in all game modes im part of a 9 man raid selling team i used to play academy gaming tournaments in pvp and now the only game mode i play is wvw. and true viable and optimal are different but in raids if for some reason we lfg and u can only play rev we will ask you to the leave thats a fact so its not viable anymore becz it wont just be us doing that. and in pvp rev was already hurting just becz of how predictable the classes auto procs and utilities are. to get a easy rev kill 1st burst and w8 for bubble, then burst and w8 for glint heal (do no damage at all so they dont heal just run away is best) then burst and dead and with shiro heal nerf rev v thief is RIP for rev

100% agree i think the pre patch balance was one of the best all round for pvp and pve every classes had a job it could do but now we are forced to over stack on some classes and leave some out

Lol wut?
Sword auto got a 6% damage boost, on the two weakest hits in its auto chain, for a combined total of less than 5% increase in the auto damage. Sword 2 got its damage doubled, but only in PvE. None of our other weapons were even touched, except for an extremely minor tweak on GS that finally means you no longer have to stow it after every auto in order to achieve max DPS with that weapon.
This didn’t solve the DPS problems that mesmer has, and they are most definitely not near the top of the DPS ladder with these changes. Mesmer power dps has always sucked compared to our condi dps, condi dps was never top tier DPS outside of extremely niche scenarios, and condi dps was not touched for us. All we get was a very small power dps buff, which definitely did not fix a lot of mesmer dps problems. It barely addressed 1 weapon.
