While this is annoying its completely understandable these things happen unexpectedly and its great that you\re fixing this asap.

However after 4 years playing we STILL get the template logon error message regardless of the situation. Instead of showing us the message blaming OUR end and OUR internet connect can we start getting proper information. When you have shut down the servers (planned or unplanned) can you say so when we are trying to log in. I’ve seen that login error 1000s of times over the years and only TWICE was it my internet connection (router needed resetting) 98% of the time its nothing to do with my internet or router and its down to your servers (for whatever reason).

Not everyone checks twitter and a lot of people are running around calling their ISPs, resetting routers, reinstalling the game to try to fix the issue when its as simple as you taking down the game for a short time.

The first point of call to the issue is this error message and it makes sense instead of saying its an issue with the players internet to inform them instead of the real reason.
Anets known for very bad communication with players, removing this error message that’s 98% of the time misleading/incorrect would be a great start.

I agree that a message should pop up “Servers are under scheduled/unscheduled maintenance, we will be back online shortly” instead of the “unable to login” or whatever it is they give us.

The same technology that is in use on the main login screen for the client (where you see the news messages “New items in gem store”, “Watch our twitch video”, etc.) could possibly be used on the no login server screen.
Just a thought.
Obviously, if the internet is unreachable, just say that.

It can never hurt to reset your router, so where’s the problem ¯\(^.^)

I agree that when they do a shut down to repair issue they should advise in advance, in gw 1 they would tell you 1 hour in advance or send message many day in advance we are going to do maintenance work on that day from this time to that time.

also agree that most of the time the network issue seams to be from their end. so the message are misleading when they say it is your router modem or internet connection. since I check all those and there is no issue 95% of the time. the fact that I am not the only one in game having issue lag disconnect etc. tell me right away that it is on anet side.

also this web site seams to be connected to the game server in some way since when you have issue with the game often this web site seams to have performance issue also. everything goes slow or connecting some time is not possible. today it is slow.

Though having 1 hour in advance is nice, there may be some time critical maintenance like this one may have been.

For example, the binding to other characters can affect work time for the devs. There is a chance any of the bound items which were placed in the bank will require support to resolve. As more time goes this can become a huge problem if support has 50 support ticket cases rather than 10000 cases. There is also a possibility that the longer they leave it in game the harder it is to reprogram as there are many registry values and codes running which could unintentionally make it permanent (requiring more support tickets)

If there was an exploit in game, I would expect an unscheduled maintenance or a rollback in some cases; rollbacks can come with their own community complaints too.

I suspect they didn’t put a default message in because they very rarely take the servers offline for maintenance. Normally even unexpected and urgent bug fixes can be done with the servers online.

Even in this case it sounds like they could fix the problem with the servers running, they just took them down to stop more people being affected.

Because that becomes a CS nightmare fixing all those players who get affected if they kept them up. Best to kill it before NA peak hits.

I’ll 100% admit I was dumb and uninstalled because I was having issues before this and just figured it got worse. Now I can’t re-download the game because the My Account is down.

hmmmm, let me try… your roommate is trying to do cpr to someone but needs to watch a youtube instruction video, and you resetting the router interrupts the playing and the person dies. happens more often than you’d think :P
