I was just about to convert my ascended sets stats but luckily decided to google some info on it first only to find out I will lose the runes and sigils if I do so, I mean really?…
okay okay so I go to the shop and look up the extractors mmm yup I thought I remembered them being an over the top price and my memory was correct, just for the armour alone I would take a 60 gold hit as a loss if I didn’t extract them, not that big of a deal I suppose, if I wanted to extract (weapons not included) I would have to fork out approx. $29 of my countries dollars to do so.
The point im trying to make is directed at Anet, if those extractors were a more reasonable price (in my opinion) you’d have some more of my juicy money, but as it stands I am willing to lose my perplexity runes instead.

They are only worth it to yank infusions unless you have some ultra expensive upgrades in your gear. Yes in bulk they are $2.50€ a piece in gems or 51 gold in gold converted gems at the moment.
A quick search only shows 11 items more expensive than that, six are +10 and above infusions, three are from the Halloween 2012 event and one from the 2012 and 2013 Wintersday event and only one that still drops live in the world (which is the most expensive).
It was expensive when they introduced it months before the wardrobe change.

Think of the extractors as “agony infusion extractors” rather than rune or sigil extractors.
The mystic forge mechanic is setup to create a new item, not to upgrade the old ones. That’s why it can’t preserve existing runes or sigils.
I think the OP offers a fair point: if there were a rune/sigil extractor that cost closer to 100 gems for 6, then a lot of people would buy them instead of feeling that they “wasted” a high value rune/sigil by using it in karma or ascended gear that couldn’t later be salvaged.
No doubt that is true, however it would also decrease demand for those pricier upgrades and it might be that ANet is ok with ‘meta’ gear being significantly higher-priced than off-meta choices.

The question then becomes, what is the true purpose of extractors? I have the feeling that it’s to keep demand of upgrades up which helps keep the price up. That encourages salvaging, which destroys excess items and possibly encourages crafting which destroys excess raw materials.

so how cheap do you think the price of extractor should be. And the price of gem fluctuate too. you need to take that to consideration.
I think you have a point. It might be more convenient to the players. I never get why people dont’ just buy gems and convert them to gold. And for your situation just buy the sigils or rune instead of buying an extractor. But since you are asking. You probably never thought it is the same thing.

And that’s why I suggest they intentionally made it expensive because they wanted players to buy new sigils and runes rather than recycle them except in extreme circumstances. It’s a way to stimulate the economy as well as control the quantity of items via a subtle hand. And that’s more important to them and the game in the long run than a few paid gem sales or gold sink/sequestering from exchanging.
