Before I begin let me tell you I have done the rat grind of getting the best gear in the game and found it very exhausting and demoralizing and hardly worth time due to the fact once you got here came the next patch releasing higher stat gear its hardly about the fun when you can take someone you have enjoyed playing with for months and tell them you arent geared enough, skilled enough to participate in this raid or this other person is just plain better then you he might be a jerk and we hate spending time with him but we want that gear. i did it for a couple of years and then tried to stay interested in the same game and realized the content to keep me interested wasnt there.

well the month started with my bf upset about new gear being introduced and the effect it could possibly have in wvw. I tried to be supportive but I had my doubts as to where this all was leading especially since I looked at the monthly and saw dungeon completions there. Well for me or my group consisting of my bf, nephew and mom this is next to impossible. My bf is the only one with any experience in dodging and ducking. So he quickly farmed a toon up spending hours farming karma to get the gear. We got our tribe together as sweet as my mom is and as geared as she can be she is still 65yrs old with the aged reflexes, my nephew who in all his infinate wisdom thinks making his toon look good is better then actually leveling it (level 50 at this time) me well i have not been in to gear everything on my toon is crafted. The four of us take a deep breath and go in after 1/2 hours we complete it, a big relief and happiness follows cuz we can at least complete the monthly. My nephew as dippy as he is spends 150 on the game my mom has spent her fair share and complains she is spending more then what her subscription would have been at the other game. I try to keep them happy and tell them they are releasing new content, you see my hopes are up for a new place to explore as I already completed a 100% map completion. Then the event and the last two items on monthly pop and the gear. Clearly the game is trying to funnel me into to doing dungeons but not only dungeons a specific dungeon. 7 Fractals =/ its just plain demoralizing to see that after all I ve kept my chin up this is the holiday season right .. oh wait they sayed a new land a new zone God help me something that will be worth it and then i run thru their event and i m just plain not impressed and depressed about it. We did try the fractal but we didnt complete 3 due to me making a glass canyon for fun sake and no one knowing how to interupt except bf we spent 45mins on a boss. Completely fustrated and feeling less and less like a community member here in game, I have talked it over with my group and we have agreed is we dont have a better christmas this isnt the place for us.

So now you know my story and I guess what I m looking for is game suggestions

That was incredibly unpleasant to read, and I’m afraid you’ve mistaken the guild wars 2 forums for your blog.

It’s hard to come up with a game that bridges the age/ability/values spectrum you have going. Personally, I’m sticking with GW2 at least until they make clear what they were thinking with this patch. And it can not suggest they were bridging a gap (there was none until ascended) or adding a new plateau—just too many adults playing the game for those justifications. At any rate, I’m in till then. I still love GW2 and am completely ok with allowing them to iron out the wrinkles in a new product. I am not ok with their changing core design philosophies that they evangelized. Hey, I jumped on board. GW2, if it reverts to its vision, will be a ground-breaking game that just gets better with time. So, I suggest you give them a little time and at least hear them out on their gear-grind turnaround.

I know what you are saying op. Dungeons in this game are not very forgiving for some players. They could have added difficulty levels but they did not. WoW does that very well so everyone can enjoy the content.

I have a question, and please don’t take this as rude, I’m just curious. Why four people and not five?

Can we trade families for a while lol. My ole lady thinks playing games is nothing but a huge waste of time and effort, and money. You should be greatful that all of you guys can play a game togeather. With out no one constanly bretheing down your neck.

The thing is, no matter what online game you play there will always be somebody better then you, and if you do not grind fractals every day for hours a day you will fall more and more behind. Maybe switch your goals around. (Leaving trying another game) out of it:

If you want an exotic piece, aim for it.
If you want to raise crafting go for it.
Maybe swap out traits and try different builds.
Or look at acheivements an try to complete some as a family.
Or you can try out Mystic Weapons, your nephew will love them if he is into the look factor. You craft them.

Bottom line is as everyday goes by, the further you will fall further and further behind the gear treadmill. As long as you are comfortable with not constantly competing with others to be the first one to have ascended gear or a legendary, then you will be ok. because:

Someone will always be better then you in any online game no matter what.

It is totally understandable. They made the choice that the most dedicated and preferred players are the uber hardcore leet grinders. Anyone else isnt wanted. why else would the new content be pushed a treadmill dungeon.
The fact that your family supported this game/gem shop is amazing and like you I am very disappointed.
I hope things work out for you.

Have you tried many of the other major alternatives – WoW, LOTRO, EQ2, etc?

It sounds as though you quite like the traditional model, and getting the best gear in the most efficient way is obviously enjoyable for you. You also seem to like having regular new content to consume, which again almost all major Diku-derivatives will offer if they’re still active in order to give players something to do. (Okay, I should probably just say MMORPGs instead of derivatives, but it’s hard to let that disappointment in the industry go!)

While your post was a little hard to read, my guess would be that you are a strong Achievement-motivated gamer, so I think you could probably take your pick of any MMO and find yourself safely in the main demographic – so there’s plenty of choices out there.

Anyway, I hope you and your family (and how awesome is it that you all play together!) find a way to enjoy yourselves these holidays, whether that is in GW2 or elsewhere.

The Elder Scrolls Online is where I’m heading next. It looks similar enough to Guild Wars 2. Let’s hope ZeniMax have learned from ArenaNet’s mistakes.
