so apparently the market plan is that everyone gets the core game for free plus heart of thorns… and veteran get a free character slot. but for vets who already own the game, thats bad because i also heard that we won’t even be able to gift our free copy to anyone. (a character slot does not justify the price at all…)

why are we paying full price? can someone confirm if all this is even true?

the standard price to buy the core game alone is 50 dollars. HoT is 50 dollars. this means:

A)new players would be getting a 100 dollar value for half the price.
B) veteran players still have to pay 100 total because we’ve already purchased the game before.

keep in mind… character slots are only 800 gems… which is 10 dollars…..

i don’t really like getting ripped off. soooo i’m probably just not going to get the expansion.

Anet’s explanation is that the expansion would have cost $50 regardless of whether it came with the core game or not.

And also that the price of a character slot is the same as the price of the core game in some of the recent 75% off sales.

Therefore everyone is paying the same for the expansion and everyone is getting a freebie with the same value.

Whether you agree with that or not is entirely up to you. Quite a few people have said they’re going to wait until it goes on sale at some point. Of course no one knows when that will be but it’s bound to happen at some point. (More likely with boxed copies in shops, because it’ll be included in their own sales.)

it’s a stab in the back is what it is. i’ve made tons of micro transactions and then they hand out the game for free. and apparently, this market plan is going to be the same AFTER heart of thorns. so this means that if theres another expansion, they’re going to make us pay whatever that price is, but they’ll get the core game free and heart of thorns for free.

now tell me how that’s fair to the rest of the player base???

And, on top of that, games depreciate. Of course games, when new, will usually cost a lot. But how many games, after 3 years of being out, don’t go down in price?

Also, you’re a bit late. When originally unveiled, veteran accounts didn’t get anything more than the expansion for the same price. There was an uproar about that and it got changed to add a character slot, which, as lordkrall pointed out, has the same cost that the game has had multiple times. The complaints then I could understand – this one has no justification that I can see.

HOT would be $50 regardless, so yes, I suppose technically you will have paid $100 total, though that’s over the course of three years if you’ve been playing since launch – not all at once (barring the purchase of the deluxe version.) Though I think $50 is a bit steep for what we’ve seen of HOT so far, what would you propose veteran players get? A discount on the expansion? I honestly don’t have a problem with new players getting the base game bundled, since ANet has replaced the base game on the purchase page with GW2 + HOT. That’s what the new ‘base game’ is.

Idk, purchase it or not, other than getting a discount on the expansion for veteran players (which I disagree with,) there’s not really much to change. The decision lies with you.

have you read Anet’s address to players who have been salty over these very same issues?

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/pre-purchase-community-address/

been playing the game for 3 years? have you heard of depreciation? Its like you bought a car, drove it for 3 years, got everything you could out of it, then expecting to trade it in for the new model for its original price.

This QQ thread is literally 2 weeks late.

You have made tons of micro transactions to get stuff for said micro transactions. That have a grand total of nothing at all to do with access to the game. Nothing in any contract or rules states that you getting stuff for gems gives you anything other than what you bought with said gems.

It is fair, seeing as those of us that have played since release have had years of playing and seen stuff that new players will never be able to see or experience.

Heck, I have spent thousands of dollars on the game over the years, and yet I really don’t see the big deal with new players getting the core game for free.

So don’t do it?
You can keep playing without buying the expansion.

And the expansion might be months away and if you start saving up now you should be able to afford it rather easily when it is released.

This sounds more like a personal problem to me… ? I can’t afford $50 atm either, which is why I’m putting some money aside each paycheck until I can. I know sudden things come up and saving money for frivolous things can be difficult, but just because you can’t personally afford something doesn’t mean the price should be changed. That’s like going into a store and saying ‘I can’t afford this. Change it for me.’ You don’t do that. If you can’t afford something, you either don’t buy it at all or save until you can. Welcome to adulthood.

Yes, The standard price of Guild Wars was $60 however it’s no long that anymore. The price of products drop over time and while you may paid $60 for it over time it’s had many sales even as low as a $10 game.

You could say that this is the new price slandered price of the game. Which wouldn’t be so far off because even if you take a look at world of Warcraft standard price of the base game is $10. If you take a look at character prices they are pretty much the same.

You however are upset that you can’t get a “copy” of guild wars 2 to give away? They are giving away two free items however you only get one and they are giving away the free option which should help you the most.

They are giving the free items to “you” not your friends but to the person who buys the expansion. They reward you for buying the expansion where if you buy and down own the base game you get it for free and if you do you get a character slot.

The thing about all this is they aren’t going to give you another account even with the new players buying they can’t split the base / expansion they are not able to buy the expansion and give expansion to another player and just keep base game. They could give you the base game but it would apply to your account which would do nothing.

From what I can tell, they never planned to do an expansion system at launch which is why year 1 was filled with content. And at some point they figured it was better to do expansions instead of the feature and content patches like they were doing in first half of year 2.

If you’ve really been playing the game for 3 years, you can’t say you haven’t gotten 1-2 expansions worth of content, and all of it for free. So it wasn’t waiting 3 years for an expansion but waiting 3 years to pay for 1.

Well, yeah..duh..that’s what’s going to happen. If it bothers you so much I suggest you wait another 12 years or so and then you can buy GW2 and all its future expansions in one big bundle. The rest of us will be busy playing the game…

If you buy gems then another option, which might sound contradictory at first, is to buy the Ultimate Edition.

I’m not sure of the American prices but the UK one is £80 and comes with £42.50 of gems. Which since I buy gems periodically anyway means I got my next 6 months or so in one go and then got the Deluxe edition for the much more reasonable price of £37.50 instead of £60.

Anet are relying on the old “Keeping up with the Joneses” mentality. If you are not willing to pay good pony for the DLC just to be up with everyone else, Anet don’t want you. You would be most likely in the spectrum of players who don’t buy a number of gems a month so you are not a potential source of profit.

So, you are complaining that time passed and the price of the thing you own is lower now after 3 years, you must be new to this world.
Everything you bought in the past now cost less.
Last year I bought The Witcher 2 for 5$ and got a DLC armor for free, I’m sure that the Projekt RED market forgot about the veterans and stabbed their loyal fans that bought the game on release …

The $60 you paid for GW2 was for all the updates that came after release, and you got the base free. In the same way you pay $50 for access to HoT and future updates, the new player gets the base free as well. Many aspects of the original GW2 isn’t available or is much harder to get for new players, so they aren’t getting the same experience we paid for.
