Q:

I was wondering what happened to dungeons?? seems like the new expansion and the old one never brought new dungeons in the game, will we see new dungeons in the upcoming expansion?? if no why not?? i honestly loved the dungeons from the core game and think it will be amazing to have them in the new areas in the expansion along with the new maps…

1. Dungeons aren’t worth it. Really no point other then getting skins and the gold rewards really bad and you can make more doing other things.

2. Group content. Due to the fact you need a group to do many of them it’s hard too get a group together all willing to do it for such a small reward.

3. Why? Why bother with dungeons when we have raids!!*

I remember doing dungeons near release and they were truly a blast. I truly feel the rewards from dungeons are lackluster.

What I want is solo dungeons really badly that then scale with the amount of people in them with rewards that will keep people doing them. I would much much rather do small dungeons with 5 people in them working together over zergs in open world PvE but the devs just killed off dungeons

They changes the focus of 5 man content from dungeons to fractals since fractals are scalable and dungeons are not. There have been two new fractals that have been released since living world season 3 started.

I have to disagree with all of this.

There is, and always has been, a demand for group content. Raids, and even fractals to an extent, have much higher barriers to entry than vanilla dungeons. The time it takes a typical pug to clear a single raid boss is greater than what it would have taken to complete three or four dungeons back in the day.

Dungeons no longer seem worthwhile because they were allowed to stagnate. If dungeons received a little attention, if there were new rewards added to the vendors, new titles and/or achievements or new uses for dungeon tokens… far more people would still be running them.

They’re quite buggy for sure, but offer a completely different experience than that of fractals and raids. They’re far less gimmicky and mechanically complex, and allow for more varied tactics.

Yes, the Devs have stated there will be more Raids…and Fractals released.

Fractals are the supported 5man pve content these days with new fractals being added relatively steadily and the quality being quite high. I think the game could do a better job making new players aware of fractals as while leveling you just get mail telling you about dungeons and in most mmo games dungeons are the bread and butter pve .

Anet stopped with dungeons years ago. They have stated a few times that their new focus for 5 man pve content is fractals. It has been that way for a very long time and they show no signs of changing directions since fractals are getting a steady flow of content. Honestly, there is no reason to hold onto some false idea that dungeons are going to make a comeback. If anything, they should just scrap dungeons from the world and find a way to incorporate them into fractals. That will probably be more work than what it’s worth which is why I’m guessing they haven’t bothered to change something about them.

I was thinking the same. Dungeons and fractals always seemed like the same thing, except fractals had scaling. But, as you say, it’s unlikely.

Regardless of the merits, regardless of whether one thinks that there are important distinctions between fractals and dungeons, ANet decided that they weren’t going to pursue them further.

Working on existing dungeons turned out to be complicated, even just to fix the “obvious” bugs. They decided to start from scratch and set up fractals to be easier to extend & maintain.

That means it’s unlikely to ever be the best use of dev time to add dungeons, since they’d have to further divide their teams and maintain even more different bits of the game.

I still run dungeons regularly. Some years back, dungeons were like fractals and raids. People were asked to ping there gear and kicks for the slightest non optimum move were common.

Fortunately, that crowd has moved to raids. I’m unwilling to deal with the hazing and extreme grind that Raids/high level fractals entail.

These days I take PUGs through places like CM, AC or TA. I can reasonably take a group that averages about 10 levels under the recommended for paths I know well.

In GW1 there are now dungeons that are near impossible. They were designed for an all human group ( no heroes or henchies,) and it’s very difficult to find a group.

I think that will happen to raids in the future. The focus on “hard” content is ill conceived in my opinion.
